I was just told that Gold Spike downtown is now non-gaming, or rather non-gambling with quite a few non-gambling games.

    Is this true?

    Hi dmr,
On my last few visits to DT ( 4 in the last 11 months) I have made it a point to go over to GS. The only "games" I have seen : Corn-hole, beer-pong, chess, twister, and jenga ( all over sized and some regular too) and teetherball, these were out back . Inside, connect four, a water race, ski-ball, and a few other little things. But no gambling games. To tell you the truth, I don't recall seeing any VP on the bar top either.

Might as well make it non drinking too. heck, while we at at it might as well be no fun allowed too. Seems like a childs place now with those goofy games.

I have fond memories of partying at the bar with a lady, about my age but was using a walker and had oxygen. Terrible shape. She was smoking and I asked her if she didnt feel that was a bit dangerous with the oxygen right there in her nose and she said no, the tank is way over there. Sure enough the tank was way at the end of the bar and they had a super long tube snaking its way over there. Thought that was hilarious.

    Ah, the good old days.

Plenty of booze still flows at the Gold Spike... just no gaming. It was one of this first projects Tony Hsieh tackled. I believe most if not all of the property's rooms have been converted into small apartments. The top floor recently served as the host residence for MTV's 3rd installment of the Real World (Las Vegas). The Spike is a plenty lively joint, just no gaming.

I saw the same thing at Suncoast, only the tank was right next to her as she puffed away. I moved to the other side of the bar.

I am starting to wonder, am I the only Gen-x
'er here (will be 47 this year) that occasionally enjoys a goofy game of Corn-hole or Jenga? Granted, I never knew the GS as anything other than it is today, but I kind of like having a place to stop into, hang outside, and take a breather from the sensory overload the casinos offer. Don't get me wrong, the vast majority of time in Vegas is spent with my butt glued to a chair at a bj table but I think it's nice to have options.

I'm on the upper end of Gen-X and there are people here younger than me for sure. I love a good game of life-sized jenga or beer pong, but I don't go to Vegas for that. That's for BBQs here in the summer. It's always nice to have options, but it does seem odd for a long standing casino to not have any table or machine games.

Corn hole is for tailgating..in my case either Gainesville or Tampa Florida. Jenga is played at a local brewery imo. Neither are games I care to play in Vegas. But, you know what? I'm not gonna pay $500 for a bottle to sit in a club listening to a dude play techno fuck around on a laptop either...which much of these kids would probably rather do than spend $500 at a craps/roulette/bj table so...fuck it. I'm old...AND GET OFF MY LAWN..

I used to love the members talking about the old Gold Spike; about it's dumpiness, colorful characters, "interesting" food offerings, and hole in the wall ambiance.

I wanted to visit back then but I was too scared, lol!!

The video poker s*cked there, but the drink service was quite good even on a busy weekend night, because it was so small. Two waitresses were almost 1 too many because they came around so often. And I loved that they comped Sam Adams bottles at the bar.

My first card-counting experience was at GS. I was terrified at $3/hand. :p

We also like taking an hour break to go in, have a drink, and have some friendly husband/wife competition. We usually go during the day when the place is empty and we have our choice of free activities. Have passed by at night though and it looked fun, but by then we were in "game-on" mode.
