I'll be honest, the ability to bet on real eSports tournaments would be a nice Vegas pull for the younger crowd.

My husband and I are big gamers and have always enjoyed the eSports scene.

There are tournaments routinely that are hosted online.. big ones like League of Legends World tournament that is always hosted in September/October timeframe.. if I could bet on the games, I would be in Vegas in a heartbeat for that.. and likely many of our friends would as well... as just one example.

The League tournaments get millions of viewership world wide..

http://www.lolesports.com/en_US/articles/2016-league-legends-world-championship-numbers <- just to give you an idea. Last year's tournament yielded almost 400 million daily views/impressions with 15 million concurrent viewership with a 40+ million total viewership.

I've watched some Call of Duty tourneys over the years and they were actually pretty interesting. This is a cool idea, although I doubt I'll ever make it over to the arena.

If there's a big Call of Duty tourney when I'm in Vegas some time I may place a bet or 2. The only problem I see with this is that it seems like these tourneys could be easily rigged by someone paying off a player at some point...Seems more likely than a sports league IMO

This. This right here (betting on eSports) could be the new golden egg all these casinos who are looking to attract a younger audience. If they would allow this widely across all major sports books, this could be a game changer. As corgilady said, LoL is HUGE and any piece of that pie would be a coup for which ever casino jumps on it first.

My only experience with eSports is fighting games (Street Fighter for example) and I try and come to Vegas every other year for Evo, the world championships of fighting games ( http://evo.shoryuken.com). Being able to bet on something like this could be a bridge for many younger fans to spend more time and money in a casino.

While it's great that Las Vegas is building one eSports arena, Vegas needs to do more to draw a significant amount of the gaming generation in to Vegas to bet and gamble. There's some things that aren't working in its favor:
    • There's already online sites like Bovada that have betting for eSports. You don't have to go to Las Vegas to bet on these games.
    • Online streaming sites like Twitch show these events, and viewers can talk about these events in real time on the chat or on online forums from the comfort of their own TV/computer at home. There's no real incentive for them to go to Las Vegas if they're not local to the area.
    • California has an advantage in the eSports field, since several gaming companies, like Riot Games (League of Legends) and Blizzard (Starcraft, Warcraft, Overwatch) are centered in Southern California. Heck, a university in California (UC Irvine) even has its own eSports arena.
    • Southern California is closer to Asia than Las Vegas is, which helps when many top pro gaming teams come from Asia.
To me, if Las Vegas wants to get more of the gaming crowd's money, it needs to build more arenas and/or hold more eSports events than any other city so that it becomes the number one hub of eSports. I feel like giving incentives to the organizers of these gaming events to hold the events in Las Vegas, showing eSports events in the Race and Sports books and in some hotel bars, and packaging eSports event tickets in hotel package deals would be a way to bring the new crowd in.

ESPN's Behind the Lines had an interesting story yesterday on the gambling aspect of e-sports and how the casino industry has their eye on it. WIth Millennials not taking to slots the casinos want their cash in other ways. The show also talked about the gambling aspect of skins. A lot of kids (and adults) have lost a lot of money. As one who doesn't play video games I thought the show was really good. I'm sure ESPN will rerun it several times.

As someone who plays LoL a ton and loves to watch it, the thought of being in the arena watching a match that I'm gambling on is pretty awesome... assuming there will be drinking involved. Plus I can have fun chatting with the 7 other people in the crowd.

Are there attendence figures for these events to gauge? It's so easy to watch online so I wonder if an e-arena will make any money off spectators or just off participants coming to town for events.

The Staples center had 20,000 people for an esports championship last year.

Wow! This could mean business for the larger arenas in town, too, then. Another question: Can they do tournaments on the fly like poker?

Anyone can set up a tournament, but people aren't going to be interested in an event unless they're seeing the best of the best play with something significant on the line, because people crave drama. Riot Games (League of Legends creator) holds the League of Legends tournament that you see in the above picture, and they offer millions of dollars as the prize, so obviously there are going to be a lot of people interested in watching that tournament. I would liken this situation to golf, where some tournaments are going to be held in higher esteem than others due to history and prize money as well as the players involved, although eSports is still in its infancy in comparison at this point.

I saw this as well, was interesting. Almost seemed like millennials will be attracted to gambling if it is in the form of digital currency, in this case these "skins" from the various games

I just watched a report from the American Casino Guide's YouTube page where a company is coming out with skill-based gambling games that are basically like phone app games that pay out depending on how well you play. They're supposed to be in CA and Vegas sometime this quarter, maybe Q3. Could this be the bridge that gets the millennial group over from gaming to gambling?
