It sure seems to me that I have beginners luck more often than I should when I try out a slot for the first time. I don't even play slots much but there have been several times where I hit a good bonus the first ten or so spins on a new slot. Couple of examples-

My mother in law told me to try a Quick Hit machine if I saw one and at South Point I put in $20 and on the third spin hit 7 QH symbols for around $230. Had a similar experience at Orleans on a different machine but don't recall what type it was.

Another time my buddy and I decided to try a Flintstones machine and we hit a bonus on the very first spin, we didn't even know if we were in a bonus at first LOL.

Invariably when I go back to try these again I don't hit a bonus and give back some of the winnings. It just seems like when you don't know how the game plays you hit something good, and later, once you have played it more and figured it out, you realize you were very lucky the first time you played.

Anyone else or is this just me?

I hit $7600 the first time I played WWII and $2800 the first time I played Buffalo. Of course, now I'm hooked on both.

Wow...it sure seems like you do have the luck - not sure I can say the same - but I will say when they come out with an entirely new machine I do have some beginners luck.

    Fun thread @Johnzimbo !

Husband and I had a lot of free play that we won in a slot tournament drawing, and our host encouraged us to try a high limit hundred dollar machine just for the heck of it since she knew we'd never do that with our hard earned cash, lol!
We putzed away a good chunk of our freeplay with a few wins here and there and finally talked ourselves into the high limit room. Both of us spotted a hundred dollar top dollar with two max credits, sat down, gingerly put two hundred bucks in the machine, set up the free play, looked at each other, like are we really going to do this??? A two hundred dollar spin??
Decided to hit the spin together, my hand above the spin button, his on top of mine, one, two, three, bam....

    Top Dollar, you say? NO

But we did get single bar, triple diamond, triple diamond - and won $9,500 - just like that - first spin.

Have never been tempted to do that again....but we lose plenty on dollars and five dollar slots, haha...

Upstairs at The D in Jan '14 I hit this for $200, and I rarely play slots. First time I ever played it. I was getting eaten alive at the Vue Bar and I thought wth, play a slot.

Not always but when I am lucky, it tends to be a perception ruining big win that I will never replicate. Case in point: The new Wonder 4 Tower games. I got a Buffalo Super Bonus with 15 free games my first time playing. I get a huge Buffalo hit before I even get to the top of the tower and another with a multiplier. Plus the free games are retriggering like crazy. I was over $1000 with 30 games to play and praying that I don't end up with a W2G. I ended up with $1100 won in the bonus. Now, every time I play it, just hoovers my cash like it's trying to take every cent back. The thrill of the first win makes me want to play it but not being able to get a decent win makes me kinda hate it.

No but it won't stop me from trying. The first time I played craps and blackjack, 28 years ago, I got lucky and felt like I couldn't lose. Of course that theory came crashing down soon after.

Generally I don't think I do. Many new slots I have bombed out on as well.

But one may perceive they do better on slots at first because they do the following. If they do poorly on a new slot, they'll never touch it again. But if they do well on a new slot, they'll play it again. So this will likely give the perception that you have luck the first time because you'll conveniently forget all those new slots that "sucked" that you never touched again.

No I dont seem to have that luck, for me its the opposite. i see other people winning and when i get my chance to try it its like the thing is in broken mode and does everything but pay out. Walk past ater on and people are winning again. The buffalo was especially. looked like fun until i played it of course.

Yes, it certainly feels like luck on a new slot. So easy the first time with hits and bonuses and fun stuff flying across the screen when I haven't a clue what I'm doing--just having fun. Mock myself silly when I try later on and realize how lucky I was!

Sometimes it works on an old slot too. I ignore the fishing game with the "Catch the Big One" bonus for years. I was rushing out of the casino, looking to spend the last of a lousy TITO ticket (I think I had $2.00 on it or something) and the machines were full, except for one of these. I said, "Oh well," tossed it on the machine and hit the bonus. Got the big fish and ran out with a couple hundred. Still won't play that one again, though.

    Luck. Go figure. :rolleyes2:

I very very very rarely play slots and never at my local casino. Today I was there and stopped at the players club to get some match play coupons I had coming for craps. She told me "did you know you have $10 in free play on your card?". I said "nope, I've never played slots here". So on the way to the craps table I picked a random machine. It was a nickel machine, max 100 credits. First spin nothing, down to $5 of free play. Next spin I won some bonus that gave me 7 more spins. 10 minutes later I cashed in a ticket for $170. I may start playing slots, it's easy money :)

If I were the suspicious type I would say it was rigged to pay me so I'd get hooked. They probably thought I'd put that $170 right back into the machine. Nope :)

I have great luck on a slot the first time I play it. The very first time I played the Flintstones, I was getting bonuses every other spin. I would let the machine add up to over $200 and then cash out the ticket, then put another $20 in it until it added up to $200 and by the time I was finished and felt the machine run cold, I had over $1500. This was in the Wynn. Last year, I got just as luck on a Jackpot Inferno machine. It didn't matter what casino I was in, if I played that machine, I was sure to pull at least $200 out of it. So, I just played it the entire time I was in Vegas and came back a winner. However, with that being said, every time I try to go back to the machine I was lucky on the last time, it always tries to take every dime it gave me back . I also hit for $1796 on another machine I had never played at Flamingo. It was a .25 cent Blazing 7's Hot Spin machine.

No. I've had luck sometimes and other times nada. Quick Hits, first time was a blast. Planet Moolah, first time was a bust. Elvira, first time was a win with bonus rounds. Britney, first time was a quick money suck. Buffalo first time win, DaVinci Diamonds first time loser...

In general I guess people are very inclined to remember the first time they played a particular machine and it happened to pay out.

Also, if you win big the first time you play a machine then it's probably a good chance you're not going to get the same big win the second time you play it! Makes sense as most times you sit at any machine you're most likely going to lose. Law of averages.
