First stay at Sam's Town

My wife and I will be staying at Sam's Town next week for the first time. I would appreciate any thoughts the board has about Sam's Town, and any comments on food at the casino.

First all, I hope you don't head downtown, LOL. Sam's Town is located on the east side of Las Vegas along Boulder Hwy.

somewhat isolated but there is decent shuttle service to the strip and downtown.

 

This is now becoming our "home" casino for pleasure trips. I like almost everything about it except for the fact that it's out in the toolies!

Hotel rooms are fine, but nothing special. If you will be taking naps during the day or even early-mid evening, get a room that does not face the court. The ROAR of the show will wake you. (And I can sleep through a freight train not that far away.)

The bad thing is that they closed their great coffee shop and put in yet another TGIF. They also closed Billy Bob's, their excellent steak house, and put in a more expensive steak house which we have not tried yet. The buffet is very OK but nothing to rave about. Actually, for a low cost buffet it's probably one of the best. Just basic buffet food. Nothing outstanding, but always something that is semi-good.

I like the good gaming conditions. Loads of low-limit VP and slots and many machines that I like. Modest play will get you freebee rooms.

I know I'll think of something else right after I hit POST.

 

There is a nice movie theater inside the complex....nice for a gambling break. And there is a WalMart across the street for picking up stuff for the room.

 

Agree with all above. If over 50, Wednesday is young at heart with point multiplier up to 50x (most I'm ever got was 20x). Also, discount movie tickets(about 10 different movies) and buffets from slot play. Use points for 40% off food. If you want a fridge in room it is $15 per stay (not day). Bus goes from Sams to Harrahs and back. Same with bus to downtown. It is a full size Showtime bus, so plenty of seats. We prefer buffet to MSS, and we like MSS buffet. TGIFridays is same as all others, and they have the whole slab rib special on Wed for $11.99 with 2 sides (enough for 2 to split). Rex bar has bands every night, I believe.

I'd say the food isn't that great but ok. Shuttle to the Strip every day wich we used and just retired at Sam's for some gambling at night.

On Boulder Highway (which is very busy) Be careful when crossing if stocking up at Walmarts or visiting another casino on the other side.

Drinks service we found to be great but maybe as they liked our English accents. Lovely girls and very pleasant.

Rooms i'd say are ok nothing fancy but did the job for us.

Met some lovely locals in there also.

Hopefully get over to Vegas again before may so will defo be staying there for a few nights.

 

I still have not figured out the pattern of the drink service there. "Consistently inconsistent" is what I call it. Sometimes they literally come around before you can finish one, and other times it seems like you're at an AA meeting! I thought for a while that it was more regular in the main Penny Way section than it was over by the theater and the restroom but on the last trip it was irregular in both locations.

 

We usually split our trips between Sam's Town and MSS. If you have a rental car, use parking garage 2 - park on level 3 - This will give you a straight shot to/from the hotel without having to go outside or use the parking garage elevators. Drink service is usually good at or near the table games, other areas may be more spotty. $5 double deck 3:2 BJ tables available pretty much all the time. If you are a bingo player, there is a very good bingo hall on the 2nd floor. Comp rooms (even on weekends) are pretty easy to get with minimal play. The Deli at the sports book have some good "munchies" deals. The breakfast buffet is good, "normal breakfast fare" - nothing extravagant, but a good value. Plenty of full pay video poker machines including nickel (10 credit) deuces wild.

 

I am going to be staying at Sam's next month for 4 days for the first time. As usual lots of great advice by the members on this board. I will ask the front desk to try to get me a room not facing the atrium as I prefer do like to sleep once in awhile . Thanks dmr for the info on Sam's very helpful.

 

Some rooms don't have a safe. You can get a free safe deposit box at the cage for a $25 deposit (even if your room has a safe).
TGIF has a breakfast special for $4, two eggs, hash browns, meat, and toast. Does not include drink.
Cajun shrimp pasta dish is very good at TGIF, they have the regular size and a special.
We love catching a movie around lunch time. Unless things have changed the movie ticket gets you a BOGO entrée at TGIF.
I've found the best drink service at the Stage Coach bar upstairs across from Bingo.
The Rock Shrimp appetizer at Angry Butcher is great.

I've said this many times, to us Sam's Town is like a giant cruise ship. We can check in on Saturday and never step outside till we leave on Tuesday.

Have never stayed at the hotel but have stayed in the RV park behind the casino. Love the casino and as others stated pretty decent buffet and snack bar by the betting area. Decent bands to listen too also. A McDonald's and Panda Express also on site also a donut shop. The shuttle to strip and downtown is also a big + for us.

 

Last show is at 10pm and really not that loud.

Ty's description as a cruise ship is fitting. You can stay on the ship or take free shore excursions to the strip or downtown. It's got high and low end restaurants and everything in between. Although it's off on it's own it has a lot of options going for it. And comps are generous.

One tip - don't order potato skins at TGIF. Awful.

Danamrak, how was the RV park? Crowded, noisy or "oh so convenient"? Getting closer to buying an RV and wondering how your experience was.

I stayed there for NASCAR races three times. Really enjoyed the whole place, had inside rooms and loved the action and view out the window to the atrium. Maybe six years ago last stay.

Last time I was there I played quarter VP with a great view of the atrium from an upper balcony, great drink service. The place is really fun, I actually don't remember a shuttle, we had a car so maybe never used it. Nice staff too, shuttle would be great.

Rv park is very convenient right behind the casino. Nice restrooms, small pool area and laundry. Sites are close but most have a grassy area behind them. I believe it is now run by KOA. The convenience to the casino and the free shuttle to the strip and downtown is a big plus for us. Never had any problems when staying there.

 

If staying at hotel and need to do a load of wash, you can use room key to access coin laundry at RV park. Same at MSS.

 

Our only stay at ST was a feeder offer for 5 nights. Knowing about the shuttle to downtown, I double booked a night at the GN in the middle of our ST stay so we actually only stayed 4 nights. I think 3 nights would have been plenty. Our room did face the atrium right behind the main stage so to speak, but really wasn't a big deal because we always returned to the room after the last show. We became a little exhausted with the food choices after a while. We also went to Eastside Cannery just to the south of ST. Loved it! It is now a Boyd property but I have not heard if they have intergrated their players club with bconnected yet. BTW, IMO, it is a comfortable walk to EC.
