Losing Vegas traditions

With the news of Du-Pars closing at the Golden Gate I was wondering what you had lost over time that we lost in Vegas?

I used to go to Du-Pars on every trip and enjoy breakfast with pancakes and a shrimp cocktail. I'm wondering what I need to do now for a new tradition.

 

I've only been going since '11, so I'm not missing THAT much, but it was sad to see the Riv go, even though it was a dump at the end.

I miss some individual bars like The Pub at MC and Sporting House at NYNY. Other places come along to pick up the slack, though. I thought THEhotel was pretty great, not a huge fan of what they did turning it into Delano.

I miss all the money I've lost on slots in the 18 trips I've taken.

 

the Riv was a dump long before the end. I can go on and on about the things that I miss, but I will contain myself. the stardust / westward ho / frontier. it was 3 in a row of low roller type joints on the strip. I miss the craps table at the SLOTS A FUN. I certainly miss the Barbary Coast -- possibly my all time favorite. I miss the buffet at the GN downtown. that is, when it used to be downstairs and it was really good. I miss affordable, resort fee free strip lodging. ok, that's enough for now.

 

Hopefully when one tradition dies opportunity to start a new one presents itself.

Maybe it's just me but it seems all the old (and even the not so old) traditions are disappearing faster than new ones can be found.

I hope it's just me and that I'm wrong.

 

No it's not just you. Vegas is ever changing and ever expanding. Most of the deals have come and gone. It's all about the corporations squeezing every last penny they can.

 

Du Pars ?...........For me - that's the name of the "new" place.
I used to go in there before it was Du Pars.
Not sure what it's name was, back then ?......"Golden Gate Diner" ?

 

It might have been a dump to some, but I miss Bill's Gambling Hall.

 

Barbary Coast is what I miss the most. My first lesson and game of craps there.
I think they even had NSUD at bar. Plus was a great place to self park on the strip.

 

I miss the old O'sheas. I really was a dump but I loved it there.

 

Yeah, I have a tradition of losing in Vegas.

 

Everything I love about LV is still there. I think Dupar's pancakes are the first thing that I will miss along with the Golden Gate's $.99 shrimp cocktail (long gone but replaced with the Skyline's $1.49 shrimp cocktail). I love doing coupon runs with the ACG and the LVA-MRB. I love the 'Wow' factor of the Strip properties (especially Bellagio, Palazzo and Wynn). I love having a car and checking out all kinds of 'local' eateries and casinos. I love all types of new specials that come in even though some leave (the $1.49 breakfast at the Klondike Sunset is awesome and would easily cost $20 on the Strip).

I think what I miss most is that the City doesn't put gambling on a pedestal like it used to. Clubbing and ancillary activities have moved up in importance to their bottom line.It's like the gambling aspect is being slowly pushed to the side. For a middle-aged man that doesn't club or shop that kinda sucks.

 

I miss 3:2 blackjack.

I miss not having to consider walking on The Strip as an obstacle course for beggars, degenerate costumed characters, families with strollers and other things that are distractions to the flow of Vegas.

 

This past weekend, was able to play 3:2 in NYNY on a double deck table. Minimum $50. Played in a lounge at MGM, where the minimum was $100 / hand, 6 deck shoe.

Every trip becomes more difficult to find those 3:2 tables on the strip.

I agree with all the money I have left in that city! As for the Sporting house, it was ESPN zone prior to that, which we use to really enjoy.

 

I miss the HO, Stardust and Frontier, but DuPars?? What have they been open, 5 years? Bring back GG Diner. That I miss.

I used to eat at a Carrows late night early morning next to Monte Carlo after a long night of gambling and partying, or the 4.99 Steak and Eggs at Barbery Coast but those places are long gone.

 

The Sands, the Dunes. And especially the Stardust/Westward Ho. That was a fun area. Riv across the street used to be hopping. And Slots A Fun had a craps table right in front by the sidewalk. At some point that area will be revitalized. But it will be with mega resorts and shopping. Desert Inn was a cool place to go inside. I couldn't afford to gamble there at the time but it was just.....classy. The old La Mirage casino (across from what is now Silver Sevens). I stayed there a few times. Nice pool, decent rooms. Wynn bought the name and it turned into Key Largo and is now nothing.

Most of all I miss the tradition of going to Little Caesars every trip. Located in a strip mall where Paris now stands it was a fun little place. Like gambling in someone's rec room. Beer, soda and hot dogs only. Crapless craps, 4-5 blackjack tables. Loved the place.

 

I guess the closest thing to a tradition that I can not do anymore is sampling beer at The Pub at Monte Carlo. Stopped there at least once the five times that I have been to Vegas. The only thing I have now for a tradition is loaded Landshark at Margaritaville.
