If the stars continue to align properly, later this month I will have an opportunity with a new camera, a car, and a totally free day in Las Vegas.

I want to shoot what I have not shot and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for some non-cliche Las Vegas photos, even some unusual and off the beaten path shots. I will have the whole day but I will need to be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed (and sober) on Monday morning so I won't be able to travel that far.

There are a few things I'm thinking about. I have never seen the railroad tunnels by Lake Mead and that does not look like a very strenuous hike at all, if the weather is good of course. I'm also looking for some unusual angles for the lights of Las Vegas at night, if it's not too smoggy of course. I'm thinking of maybe the down-hill stretch by the Apex (???) exit, kind of by the speedway. It might give a good non-cliche view of downtown and the Strip. Maybe that and/or the down-hill part of the road to Pahrump.

I'm also planning another long-overdue photo walk in the evening, either Saturday or Sunday, doing the Strip, south of where I did the last walk over the holidays, roughly from Linq to Paris.

    Anyone have any other suggestions?

    TIA gang! :)

I really like your photography, dmr!
I can't wait to see how your new evening photo walk will turn out.

If you're out to Red Rock or near Green Valley Ranch I'd be interested in seeing some of those pics.
I'm thinking of paying those areas a visit on our trip this summer and would like a little preview. :D

    Thanks and happy shooting!

If you are feeling brave keep walking east on Fremont if you want gritty shots of urban decay (lots of shuttered old motels and strange folks). North on Main Street there are more homeless but a couple lovely cemetaries. The Lou Ruvo Brain center would be great to shoot if you find the right angle. If you take the underpass between the Plaza and MSS you get to see the north outlets, Lou Ruvo then continue on Charleston to take a couple shots of the Holsum building, then reward yourself by going to Fankies Tiki Room for a cocktail.

Thanks for the suggestions, and thanks for the compliments of course. :)

I actually did a shoot in that area a few years ago. I was in the car and not on foot, and I took most of the shots while still in the car. I'm not shy, but I definitely would not feel safe walking alone in that area. As far as classical "street" shots of people in the area, I'm not shy, but I don't want to intrude.

Main Street gives me the creepies both north and south of downtown. :(

I assume you're talking about what I call the "This is your brain on drugs" building. :) I don't have any good shots of it and it's always fascinated me, so I'll put this on the list. I'll probably park at the Outlet and walk over and try to find a view without light poles and trees and such. I think mid-late afternoon light would be best for this one.

Both Holsum (and maybe others in the so-called Arts District) and Frankie's might be good under the radar settings. Thanks again. :)

I'm not a photographer, and I have no idea if this would work, but perhaps you try asking Derek Stevens for roof access to the old LVC... you could probably get some fairly unique shots from there... and you could check with Curtis here about doing the same at the Plaza.
Worse that can happen is that they say 'no'.

The last response got me thinking (dangerous, I know), but how about some shots inside the old LVC, both in the casino area and in the hotel towers (assuming Derek would let you). Those would probably put Fremont East to shame!

It might be pushing the envelope a bit much for your tastes, but what about the under ground drainage tunnels? Just google "Las Vegas Undeground". Lot's of homeless folks and a complete subculture exist under the city.

Unfortunately I think it's long gone. It's also one I've missed. I have some shots of the Klondike before and after closure and a few others but not of those motels.

Ok, I'll bite! I googled it. Looks scenic but wayyyyyy down by Laughlin, too far for one free day and it looks like the roads into it might be very rough.

I've read about that. Kind of like The Mole People except more real-life and less embellishment. I can be gutsy but not that gutsy! :) I also don't want my clients and co-workers to have to file a missing person report on Monday! :)

Thanks for all of the suggestions, gang, and please keep them coming!

I'm probably not gonna try anything that requires special access or permission, I'm looking for more casual photo walk/drive stuff and it looks like I've got a good list started. A couple of suggestions from "another network" include an unusual bar on east Flamingo and a supposedly scenic under-the-radar view of the Colorado River east of Nelson that looks like it would be great with clear afternoon light.

    Thanks again everybody. :)

the neon museum has lots of things but maybe that is cliche? I think there is another sign junkyard at Yesco on cameron. You can see it thru a fence last time I checked which was a while ago.

    I love the motel picture.
