Credit Card fraud a felony in TX

As some of you might know I had my wallet pickpocketed 5 minutes after we walked into Jerry World for the Packers/Cowboy game.

Anyway, I filed a police report with the Arlington PD while at the stadium and they called and wanted more info on the attempted, fraudulent use of my stolen card. Date, time, location and amount. $406.47 at Target.

At first I thought what good would it do? We had cancelled the cards and the charges were denied. But he informed me that CC fraud in TX is a felony and if I called my CC company to find the info, Target has security cameras at all checkout lanes and they might ne able to identify the thief from the camera videos.

I'm not hopeful, but I was surprised that it is a felony in TX. I hope they catch the bastard!

My credit was hacked in Canada in December. They rented a couple cars with my number.

 

I hope these thugs that did this Joe are found... Waterboarding is in order

I work in IT in the card industry, I see the fraud reports every day. The amount of fraud is huge. And of course the US is always behind the times. We are finally going to chip (slowly) but it's chip and signature rather than chip and PIN, which is stupid. Merchants are afraid that making customers enter a PIN with the credit card will slow things down and inconvenience their customers. BS. Target does require Chip and Pin, but only with their own store cards, not with MC/Visa, etc... Chip/sig doesn't affect online fraud (it doesn't appear online pin will become the norm anytime soon) but it would certainly help curtail B&M fraud.

 

Joe--not sure of next years schedule but seeing how good the game was perhaps you will have to come back to identify your credit card on the same weekend as the cowboy/packer game. At our expense of course.
Honestly, I wasn't aware an act could be considered a felony in one state and next door only a misdemeanor not withstanding the recent changes in pot laws. (Obviously they are not aware --duh, home address--your are a fan of the enemy).

 

Bubba, Most exciting game i have ever witnessed in person. Forgetting all about the wallet theft, the tornado touchdown very close to Jerry World after the game and the horrendous thunderstorms and road flooding on the ride back, I think it will be a very long time before I visit Big D again. Some of my wife's family members just left a bad taste in my mouth. Just not how I would treat visiting family members from another state.

Austin still on the radar and maybe a return trip to San Antonio still a possibility in the future. My wife and I both agree, we'll just avoid Dallas and her family.

I'll never forget the game. Other things, will be forgettable.

 

You are very forgiving. Give us a heads up if you make the jump. Especially in summer. Love watching the reaction of our northern friends when it is 96 temperature and humidity.
Sorry about the family. We've got some of those ourselves. But saves us a lot of boring visits.

I didn't know that. And I've lived here for ten years now. Of course a couple weeks ago when someone started running up charges on my chase and cap one cards I went to the Houston police and they couldn't have cared less.

The chase and capital one fraud depts caught on quick. Hat tip to them.

It was about $4500 in charges. Lousy bum thieves.

 

Austin and San Antonio are great. I'm not a fan of Dallas and there isn't anything to really see here in Houston. NASA is cool but they got shafted and didn't even get one of the retired shuttles.

That weather was wild. It's been a weird January here.

 

How did it happen Joe? Did someone bump into you on purpose or something.This is something we all need to know here if you don't mind going over it.And also how tough was it to get through the airline/TSA on the way home?
This is my worst fear in traveling..sorry to hear at least the Pack won for you,I would have forgot about the game dealing with this BS..

 

We thought about it a lot after. We walked into Jerry World and the first thing we saw was a concession stand. I pulled my wallet out of my front pocket to buy two beers. But then, out of force of habit, I slipped it back into my back pocket.

Now walking past the Hall of Fame area, a guy suddenly stopped in front of me, like he was on the phone. I'm sure he was the distraction and I never felt the wallet being lifted. Two or three minutes later, I realized it was gone.

I hope they get them! My boss had his credit card stolen from his desk and launched his own investigation because the police just took a report and told him it would take a while. He found where the purchases were made online and where they were shipped and let the police know. I have a feeling the building/company will be more interested to see who they should fire, though. He said only a few people have the key and the building is controlled access, so they know who was there that day.

So far my only fraud experience (knock wood) has been a $3.00 charge from someone somewhere in Guatemala. I saw it the next day, called immediately, and explained I had never been to Guatemala. Charge reversed instantly. Had I not seen and reported it I would bet someone in Guatemala would have gone shopping.

 

Austin and San Antonio in mid/March. Neighboring Hill Country abundant with blue-bonnets and other wild flowers. Our wine trail is getting bigger. Fredericksburg has something like 40 wineries in the area- probably more. Lots to do in the area San Antonio --Mexican food to die for. Summer is brutal - maybe not as bad as Vegas but of course Vegas is a "dry" heat.

 

Sorry to hear about the theft Joe. I'm surprised that Credit Card fraud is not a felony in every state. Hope they nail the scumbags.

 

Joe, I am so glad you nipped this and it was correct. We have lifelock, and someone didn't just add charges to an existing card, they opened a Macy's card in his name! Luckily LL caught it, or we would have never know.

Then, he started having other charges show up, and someone even hacked into his email on Chase and changed it. (Probably so he wouldn't get alerts)

Thanks to a great tip on VMB, someone suggested freezing his credit. (No major purchases or new cards in the forseable future.) It has been such a relief knowing it's locked down.

P.S. Citi card contacted me last night, apparently someone ordered $42 dollars worth of pizza on my card, in Cali!

The bottomline, identity theft is rampant, no matter how careful you are. And remember, cops will go after the criminal, but they will not help in restoring your credit, so life lock or something similar (where you have insurance for legal fees) is about the cheapest $8 a month you can spend in my book.
