    Hello everyone,

Long time lurker, 1st time poster. Just had a question about the automatic Platinum status that is given through the Total Rewards Visa. I just applied for the card a week ago, and should be getting it any day now. When we are given Platinum status, are we also "gifted" the 5000 tier credits that come along with that status? Or are we just given the card for the "perks" but still start at 0 tier credits since it's a new year. Was thinking how awesome it would be to only be 10k credits away from Diamond rather than 15k. Looked everywhere for this answer but could not find it. Thanks guys!

0 tier status . Need $5000 in charges to maintain second year Platinum. Only good for vheck in and some line privelges. and BOGO on some monthly shows. Plus free buffet and $100 after $1000 spend in 2-3? months

In addition to the above, when making charges to your Total Rewards Visa you earn Reward Credits, not Tier Credits. They do not gift you Tier Credits, just automatic Platinum status when you charge $5000 on the card during the calendar year. You still have to earn 15K Tier Credits in the casinos to get Diamond status. Charlie

Since you use the TR vise your Reward Credits won't expire, just build up. I put my monthly bills on it like Directv, utility bills and cell. By the time I go to Vegas I have 7-800 bucks to use on food and bar.

Those are REWARD credits worth $50 in spend. Tier credits help you build towards each level, such as Diamond. Tier credits are earned from gambling.

And, by the way, all comp offers are tied to your average play and not tier.

I personally don't recommend the Total Rewards Visa. Way better credit cards out there with a much higher rate of return who's points can be applied to other, more worthwhile items.

I would totally agree with that. We fly free multiple times a year, often in first. All from credit card sign up bonuses. We went through over 600,000 miles this year.

hmmm, maybe we should start a credit card thread. I acquired the Reserve card last year and booked first class travel (one way) to Vegas for what would be the equivalent of 350 bucks or 35,000 points. The flight is normally 500+. Unfortunate thing is you cant select your seats through the portal so I opt for first class and then link my loyalty number to the reservation. Do you know if you earn miles for reward travel? Any other card recommendations? I saved $600 alone on this card in travel credit lol

Is this an airline credit card? I fly United or Southwest mostly.

You still have to use the card at least once every 6 months to maintain your reward credits between trips. That is why some use social rewards to get points on between visits if they do not have the card.

Have done AA, Delta and SW to get bonus. Much bigger bonuses for non airline cards and then transfer, etc. Getting miles for normal spending is much less lucrative. Sign up bonuses are often 50,000. How long would it take to spend $50,000 to get the same miles?

No idea which reserve card you are talking about. Not sure what portal you were using that did not allow you to pick seats. But, if you log onto that airline with your FF number, you can then pick seats. If you were using one of the cards that actually "buys" the ticket for you, you probably will earn miles. If you are actually using airline points, then it is a true reward and you do not earn miles. Just noticed you got $600 travel credit so will guess you have the Chase Reserve and booked through their portal.

Yep, Sapphire Reserve. Sorry for the lack of context. AND, thank you for your advice. I logged into my American account and was able to select my seat.

Well I know nobody that doesn't use their CC at least once a month and if you know that then you make it a point to use it.
As for better CC well sure but not everybody can fly 2-3 times a year. As for the TR visa, it's just a convenience CC to keep my points.

That card is one of the best deals around. The 100,000 signup bonus is dropping to 50,000 next week. Still a good deal, but that extra 50,000 is worth $500 if used poorly, or $750 in travel through Chase. Or transferred to other airlines for biz class seats.

My one gripe is that the travel partners are all brands are hardly use for travel. Living in the northeast, you'd think otherwise but United only flies EWR which isn't my airport of choice.

Okay, maybe United is not a partner, but you can use points at a 1.5 multiplier to book United. For example, you can use 50,000 points to "pay" for a $750 ticket on ANY airline. And that ticket price is the same as if you booked it direct on United. Or any other airline. Same deal.

( I was not sure if you liked United and did not like United)

My mistake for not proofing. It was supposed to read: "my only gripe is that the travel partners are all brands I hardly (or no longer) use. I used to fly with United, but ever since they migrated their planes to only fly from EWR, I've elected to no longer fly with them as its simply too out of the way.

All that aside, you're right: you can use the miles at a 50% bonus rate to book other airlines (included American and Delta) which both offer service from JFK.
