I was in Vegas Dec 6th-9th. I've been hitting Vegas a few times a year, for several years and I've always rented a car. Wasted countless hours scouring around for coupon codes and comparing rates. trying to get the best deal. For this last trip, we rented a car, but decided to download Lyft and give a whirl to see if it really lives up to the hype. My traveling buddy got in town several hours ahead of me, so she'd already rented the car. I got into LAS at almost 11pm, and I didn't want her getting out to pick me up, so my first ever Lyft ride was from McCarran to The Platinum Hotel. Cost was 6.84, plus a tip. We did some running around in the rental but for the most part when we wanted to get around on the strip without dealing with valet/parking, we just grabbed a Lyft. We saw a concert at T-Mobile and Lyfted there too. The most we paid for a ride including tip, was 11 bucks. We never waited more than 2 minutes for our driver. I just booked for February and do you think I'm renting a car? Hellll no! No more shuttle bus, and waiting for a car which can take up a good hour after you land. No more waiting around on valet, paying to park, self park, etc, etc. It's so liberating to have more getting around town options.

EXACTLY - for most people, renting a car is a pain.

For those that go to other casinos, and other parts of Vegas, then it make sense.

Going to just the strip and/or downtown? Why bother?

I always rent a car in Vegas. But my next trip in April I think I'll try ride share. While I do travel all over the valley to Red Rock and GVR, I think I'll stick to downtown and the strip. I see what you mean by liberating. Get dropped of right in front, not having to remember where you parked. Have some adult beverages without worrying about a DUI.

Exactly!! Try it, you'll love it.

I figure if I want to rent a car to venture out beyond the strip, I can always pick one up from Bally's or T.I. etc, and keep it just for a day.

Yes you can definitely get by with Uber or Lyft.

We usually make a couple stops before checking in so having a car is nice. If you are renting I strongly recommend Alamo. If you are a Costco member you can some ridiculously cheap rates. Like $20 per day or less for a full size. Online checkin and skip the counter, go to your car type lane (marked with signs) pick one, drive to the gate, hand the guy your reservation info, and you are outta there.

I am a Costco member. However for the days I'm going a full size rental is over $300. That's for 7 days. My last trip in October I paid about $290 for a mid-size SUV. It was a the time of booking the lowest option from Alamo through Costco. They way I see it, with paid parking and soaring car rentals, I think ride share will work out best. On the plus side I can have some drinks and not worry about a DUI. If I'm driving I usually don't even have one drink. Plus not having to remember where you parked.

I've been always accustomed to renting a car while in Vegas. But now, with the added parking fees at hotels, was definitely considering something like Uber or Lyft when traveling the strip. I'll keep the car for further distances like Galleria Mall, Summerlin, Red Rock, etc. But for the strip, will try to see how it works for just casino to casino.

I always rent a car when I'm in vegas. yes, I don't go to the strip as much since many hotels are charging for parking but I also go to many places which makes it worth my while to rent the car (visiting galleria mall, harbor freight, trader joes's, strip clubs, in n out, etc). I can't see not renting a car at least for a few days. After getting ripped off by cabbies I figured to just rent a car so I can go anywhere whenever I want and not have to worry about rip offs.

With CET starting to charge for parking I would assume by the end of next year all the other strip hotels will be charging for parking (like venetian/palazzo, trop, etc.).

I think to each his/her own. Some people never rent a car, others like the convenience of a rental. I'm also lucky that parking is free at the Boyd hotels downtown, when that goes away then maybe I would change my mind about renting a car in lv.

Didn't know harbor freight was a tourist destination in Vegas. But I can understand that. I love that place.

    Again, each to their own.

Personally, I love no longer renting. So I can go anywhere whenever I want and not have to worry about parking, tips, drinking, traffic. I never worry about getting ripped off by cabbies. And now, it is even better with uber/lyft.

Just downloaded the Lyft app and will use for the first time on a trip later this month. I've used rental cars for the past 2-3 years after swearing off cabs (eff those long-hauling mofos! :D), but am looking forward to using rideshare for sake of efficiency and convenience...and not having to worry about my alcohol intake!

There is no one correct answer. Well, actually, there is: Do WTF works for you and your getaway wants and needs. Simple concept.

Hopefully that works out for ya, but I actually can see it being the opposite.. higher rates to take advantage of the folks still renting.

I still love to rent. I will be out there two weeks this February, and have about a 30 minute drive to the golf course each day. Plus, I will be heading to Palm Springs to play for 3 days, too.

Not sure yet. My playing partner for the trip just called me today about Palm Springs. I believe we will be playing The Quarry if things fall together.

Nice. You run in good crowds. See if your bud can get Stone Eagle.

Not so much me, but my friend. He used to be a PGA guy here in Wisconsin, and has worked in the golf industry for 40 years. He has many friends who have went with the four winds around the country, keeping in touch and, "helping them out" when they are back in town, always reaps rewards when he is out by them.

When I went to Las Vegas with him 4 years ago, we played the likes of PGA Summerlin for next to nothing.
