I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for an app that I could track my win/loss for the day? I am not a High Roller or anything but would just kinda like to know what I win/lose. I don't do the envelop daily system or divide up my bankroll in any way for the day so i am not really sure what i win/lose, i just take a pocket full of money that i have set aside for gambling but i would like to track it this time for my trip in a couple weeks. Thanks!

Someone posted an app they used to track gambling. I think it was Fligster. I downloaded it but haven't used it yet.

Assuming you phone has a "Notepad" or similar app, you could just type it in each day. Since what you are trying to do is rather simple, it should work.

I am thinking the daily input would be something like:

    3/12/16 - Up $87
    3/13/16 - Down $43
    etc

I'm interested in any responses to this. I would, however want to be able to input enough information for tax purposes. Not just date and win/loss but casino and what other information is needed (? machine number, game type?)

I was thinking the same thing. What's hard about it?
I can't believe the IRS is actually going to expect you to track the table/machines you play on. I know how much I took to gamble /day and how much I ended up with. If I took $10K for a trip and came home with $8K, I had a total loss of $2K.
Now I take out a LOC and pay it back if I have the cash or I write a check. That's proof enough for me.

No matter what you decide to input, I am thinking the amount of typing and complexity would be (almost) the same in a notepad as entering into some fancy app

I am guessing that the vast majority of folks do not bother with logs and no matter what the IRS website says, I think most seem to get by with other documentation. The discussions happen here often and I have never seen where anyone had a problem and had to pay the IRS. I am sure it happens, but none of the degenerates here have reported it. (or the regular non-degenerates)

I've been using gambling tracker for the last year or two.
It's easy to punch in details at the close of a session (date / time, buy-in, buy-out, tips, location, game). You can enter games and casinos you play frequently into a pull-down, so it only takes a couple of seconds. There's also space to enter notes for each session if you want to keep track of anything else.
It'll compute and display basic stats: total buy-in, amount won/lost, hours played, etc. And you can sort and filter based on game, casino etc.
I'm up $4115.25 after 416 hours of play. Make that $4114.25 (the app costs a buck).

I think you need machine # / table #, time played and amount in/out as well as date of course. I would use above suggestions and transfer to a printed out spreadsheet by hand back in the room to validate days previous play.

I use an app called iXpensit. It is a general budgeting app but works well for tracking my gambling trips. Here is a link to one of my trip reports where I explain a little bit of how I set it up (last page)

I have since switched to the paid version, but it was fairly cheap.

Seems like a lot of work to show that you are a gambler and the house took your money. LOL!

I literally just do a note pad and do +100 - 200 etc.. that's it. Not interested in where I lost it, just like to keep track that's all.

They do. Check out some tax court case law. They can and do disallow deductions that aren't properly documented to their insane standards.

For most of us, it never gets to the point of needing to document it to this extreme.

But it does come into play if you win some huge hit with a W-2G (like six/seven figures), and then want to deduct significant losses against that. As an example, you win a million on some progressive slot in January. Then the rest of the year you end up losing half of that ($500k) at various times and games. Unless you've documented those losses to their extreme standards, you may find the IRS will audit you and attempt to disallow the $500k loss deduction, making the million fully taxable at the top marginal rate.

But until you hit some massive W-2G win, it's probably not worth worrying about.

I've used a few apps on Android and note pad, but currently use Easy Bankroll. It works for me, allowing me to brainlessly input data as I wander the facility, and I can export the files to pull it up on the laptop. If you so wish you can create just sessions, and also trips and those sessions will be tracked there, also. Handy for AC and Vegas craziness.
