My landline phone range at 6:45 this morning. I was about half awake and my first thought was a family emergency. Nope. It was the Windows tech support scam. :grrr: I was mad and hung up on it.

The bedroom phone is an old one without a caller ID display. When I got up, I checked the caller ID log on a newer phone by my computer and it showed the name as: Out of area. The number was: 21. I had seen that before and always let it go to the answering machine.

Is that the scam where they tell you that you have a virus on your computer and you need to go to their website to clean it?

Sounds like the Monarch had his henchman executing a fund raiser.

From what I have read, I think they try to talk you into configuring you computer so they can have remote access to it to get personal info. I did not listen to their story. The guy had an Indian accent and said he was from Windows tech support. I hung up immediately. Besides, I was still in bed and both computers were turned off.

I tell them I have a Mac. They usually hang up quickly.

One time I totally screwed with them and wasted a half hour of their time... :)

Voice mail fields 90% of my traffic. If I don't recognize the caller ID...we won't be conversing.
As my buddy Terry once said: If I've got something important to tell you, I'll tell you next time I call. If you have something important to me, tell me next time I call."

To get rid of Robo calls, sign up for NOMOROBO online, it is free, one ring and they are gone. Google it - cuts down the calls by 90%

Same problem in the UK. Everyone rings mobiles now so anything land line is generally 'cold calling'.

Had the Microsoft one a few times. I just sound interested and agree with them then just leave the receiver on so they can talk to theirself for a while.

I virtually never answer my phone as well. Something I liked to do back when I did, was to tell them they need to talk to my dad. I would then scream directly into the receiver "DAD, TELEPHONE!!!" and then just lay the receiver down and let them wait until they give up.

I setup NOMOROBO, will see how it does. I usually let the answering machine filter my calls if I don't recognize the number, but the call this morning because was unusual because of the early time and no caller ID display on the bedroom phone. Oh well. Maybe this change will help.

If you have the time play along with them. You might save some poor old person from being scammed. I once told to them to hold on I'm busy. Then I would just be quiet. Once I felt they might hang up, I tell them just another minute. I've kept it going once for 30 minutes. Just last week someone called my cell, I asked how did you get my numbers as I am on a do not call list. His response, fuck you fuck you and he hung up. I tried calling back but got a busy signal.

Think back to the time when Tiger Woods was but a twinkle in his daddy's eye, woods were made of wood, and Jack vs Arnie ruled the links.

my friend keeps getting calls and snail mail wanting to know if she has a passport (she does not). 5 or 6 calls a day. I assume that it is an identity theft scam? anyone heard of this one? they are hatefully harassing her.
