I saw the advertisement for Margaritaville Casino (at Flamingo) and their new Happy Hour special... 5 cent beers from 5pm to 6pm every day. Theres no fine print, or catches that I can see. Sounds too good to be true!

Has anyone tried this yet? What beer, what size, and how was the service of 5 cent beers handled?

and there's your catch. the ad depicted in the Vital Vegas story notes that the bar has craft beers.... which would lead one to assume that craft beers are 5 cents. i know better than to expect every beer is a nickel, but i thought they'd do better than one macro-brewed light beer. silly me.

and am i the only person who thinks we're long overdue in this country to stop calling Miller, Bud and Coors products "domestic" beers? i hate bars who offer a happy hour special on domestic beers, but exempt all craft beers they carry, despite the fact they're made in the U.S.A.

This special also shows that Margaritaville is probably desperate.

It sucks, but they probably profit more off that swill normally, so of course they can offer more "specials". Just play next door at TAG Lounge, at least they will be "free" then. ;)

You probably aren't the only one, but wah wah wah...you know what they mean, so pay 5 cents for Miller or 5 bucks for your craft beer. Easy peasy. ;)

If that price is true, you could actually get totally gooned for less than $1!

I was guessing they'd be serving 8 oz drafts, or something small. Either way, that's a great deal.

I think we ought to quit calling a lot of the "craft" beers craft when they are mass produced.

About 5 years ago, I sat at the bar at the Golden Gate, put a $20 in, and ordered a Blue Moon. Bartendress tells me "We don't comp imports." I inform her they're brewed in Denver. She goes and gets someone whom I assume is a supervisor. He affirms my fact. I get beer comped. Yay.

So you can't get a Heineken comped at GG?!? Odd. And I'd pay $5 for a good beer over a nickel for a Miller Lite, personally, but I'm not going to complain about someone trying to have an actual good deal on the Strip. Not my cup of tea, but good on 'em. If I need a cheap beer (while not playing), I'll walk two doors down to the Casino Royale for the $1 Michelob.

you raise another good point. the term micro-brew was the term of choice, and i was once told by a brewery tour guide that it was a bit arbitrary of a term. the guide said that his brewery fit in the common definition of a micro-brewer, but it wasn't their goal to remain a micro-brewery. i'm guessing craft beer became a popular term because it sounds swanky, and it doesn't describe the quantity of product produced in any given year. it's no secret the major breweries are producing products with craft beer marketing, given the dent they've seen in their market share during the past decade plus.

as for cheap beers on the strip, it's hard not to applaud a casino for a 5-cent promotion, but it's hard to applaud Margaritaville at the same time. regardless of what they're offering, i'm sure they'll be extra busy every afternoon at 5, and there will be a lot of 95-cent tips for the bartenders.

Personally, I refuse to use the word "craft" to describe beer. It's so pretentious while also being pretty meaningless. There's good beer, and there's bad beer. Just because Bud buys a "craft" brewery doesn't make the beer bad all of a sudden. And some of the stuff from small breweries is terrible.

However, I am thrilled by the fact that tasty beer is much more accessible today than it was 10 years ago! And by the fact that there are so many more options.

When I go there now, I usually don't order bottled beer. I most often order a Shock-Top on tap or Jim Beam & diet cola, depending on how drunk I am.

Sat down at the Golden Gate bar last week and Valeria, the bartender, brought me a Heineken before I could ask for one. They have always comped my Heinekens when I play VP at the bar...no problem.....regardless who is behind the bar.

The biggest benefits of good craft breweries getting bought out is that distribution tends to expand faster when they do. I first had Sculpin in Vegas. Now it's much more readily available nationwide, and several casinos in Vegas now offer it, even Casino Royale! Still waiting for Cigar City (Jai Alai IPA) to make it to the Midwest after they sold out...until then, It's basically a Disney World treat...sigh

Well more than likely if 100 people do a 5 cent beer and give $1 each - that is 100 people that likely wouldn't have stopped in Margaritaville for a beer (I know I wouldn't care to) - so that is an easy $100 in tips.

The 10-15 stragglers at that bar paying $7 for a bottle of Landshark will be giving the same $1 tip
