OK not quite Vegas, but Parumph

Looking Parumph at a possible retirement destination. Does anyone have any comments?

 

They have brothels so you don't have to drive far. I think they also have a few golf courses and not sure about now but they had a casino or two also.

There are definite pros and cons. My mom lived there for several years before passing away. I know own a third of her house + 2 acres that my brother is currently living in. Home/land prices and taxes are cheap. Mountain views are beautiful. Little traffic. Few activities. Spotty internet. Only a handful of stores and restaurants. Too few doctors, specialists have rare rotatations - long waits for appts. Hospital is not equipped to handle most emergencies. Airlift to Vegas is very expensive. Happy to answer any specific questions.

 

The Pahrump Winery is awesome and the restaurant inside it Symphony is cheap and excellent. Very nice cloth tablecloth and cloth napkin kind of place. People from Vegas treat ppl from Pahrump like they are hillbillies.

 

I imagine access to healthcare would be a big negative. I've driven through there once. Not much there. It would probably never cross my mind to retire there. I would go further north near Reno (had some coworkers retire there recently) or the LV area if i was looking at NV.

 

If you like it, all the better, but I consider the idea of retiring to Pahrump about as enjoyable as that of getting a root canal without Novocaine! It's much too hot (for me, that is) in the summer and too far off the beaten path.

They have there own Aquifer, so even if Vegas runs out of water, they will be fine

 

Does anyone have experience with St. George UT? We drove through last trip and I liked the look of the area. Farther out than Pahrump but closer to the natural beauty of UT and I would think cooler than Vegas.

I have considered both Pahrump and St. George for retirement. Pahrump just doesn't have enough amenities: No movie theater, only a few grocery stores and a Walmart, mostly fast food restaurants, only a very small hospital which means being airlifted/ambulanced to LV for anything major.

St. George has everything you'd ever need but comes with a hefty tax bill, a very conservative and not very racially/religiously diverse population, and LOTS of children everywhere. Other than that, probably a wonderful place to live, but after spending 9 years living in Salt Lake City I'm not sure I'd want to live in Utah again. And yes it is a tad cooler than Las Vegas, but not much. It IS a really pretty place, though!

 

Not part of the original OP post but I have 3 sets of friends or co workers who moved up to vegas from Hawaii after they retired. They all seem to like the move. I don't think they would have moved to Pahrump since it is "far" away from vegas. They find vegas more convenient.

As for me, I doubt I would move, especially to the vegas/Nevada area. I don't like the weather changes, too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer. I like Honolulu just fine, I can golf just about every week of the year. But I am lucky, I bought my condo over 25 years ago for under $100k and my mortgage (after refinancing a few times) will be paid off next year so after I retire I won't have that many large expenses other than the usual maintenance fees and utility fees, property and income taxes, etc. I feel sorry for the kids nowadays who can't afford to buy a place and have to pay high rent prices to live. No wonder we have such a big homeless problem in Hawaii. Unaffordable to many. Doesn't help that they are mostly building condos for investors and the rich. In Honolulu "affordable housing" is something in the $400k to $500k range, unbelievable. Where are the rest of the people going to live?

 

Tom, SG is solid. Gorgeous country, get a bit of winter, they do get summer. A smaller "full-service" town that probably has the largest percentage of gentiles of any city in Utah (but still a Mormon town). We've always found the people to be hospitable. Amazing outdoor activities for every season. The golf is RIGHTEOUS.

Pahrump is a hole.

 

St. George is estimated to be about 70% LDS; Salt Lake City about 40%. (Not that there's anything wrong with that, LOL, but again not very diverse.)

 

So there we have it. Thanks. Never trust the local tourism people. I stand by the rest!

I heard St. George Musical Theater is up and running again, and Tuacahn is a LEGIT performing arts institute (and the setting is awesome).
