Plaza

Anyone familiar with downtown (DT) Vegas and the strip, knows they are worlds apart. The strip is more glamour and glitz, whereas, downtown is more grit and old school. These days, I find that the black jack payouts are more favorable DT, not to mention the table minimums are lower. If you are looking for higher limit games there are a few places to look DT, but the Plaza is not one of them.

Casino: Although the Plaza did not offer a high limit area, they had a (and only one) $25 double deck game. The dealers were very personable and friendly, as well as the pit bosses, and the CW's. The casino host was extremely kind, professional, and accommodating. There were a few coin operated machines ( that brought me back to "old times" in AC). They have a nice mix of new slots to choose from. There was live entertainment near the pit. I have to say, it is a little loud if you are sitting at the tables (but I might be getting a little old, too) but they are great at their show. People were dancing and having a great time. Overall, I found the casino to be fun. I know people talk about an unpleasant smell, maybe because I’m a nurse I am immune, lol? I didn’t notice anything offensive.

Hotel: This was my first time staying here and I will be back. When I got there it was a little early, maybe about noon. I was informed that my room was not ready and was asked to come back around 130, which was fine. When I came back, I was told my room still was not ready but the young man at the desk said he would give me another room instead. For the record, I understand that my first room was supposed to be a regular suite, but I was given a two bedroom suite, which was huge. The amenities were rather basic but comfortable, toiletries were good, AC worked great, there was a fridge, and Keurig. Also, elevators were quick. I have no complaints about the room/hotel at all. This room was in the South Tower and I had no issue with noise from Fremont.

Pool: The pool and pool bar were open. I ordered one drink, which set me back $19 (plus a tip) BUT comparing the price and size of the drink, to what I paid up on the strip, it was a bargain, (not to mention I got a double shot). So again, no complaints here either. There is also tennis courts, pickle ball courts (which I have no idea about), a hot tub, and black jack tables near the pool.

I really enjoyed my stay at Plaza and look forward to staying there again!

I only have one night downtown during my December trip and will give the Plaza another look

 

$19 for a drink downtown? No thanks...you see, that is the problem, if the Plaza thinks that the path to success is charging $19 for a poolside drink, they are dreaming.

 

The plaza seems to be getting their act together better slowly but surely. Oscars is a great steakhouse.
I wish they had a 24 hour diner though.

I get what you are saying, but playing devil's advocate, I paid 15. for a slushy drink at GG ( no extra alcohol added). Here (Plaza) I was lounging at the pool leisurely, it was brought to me (don't I sound snobbish lol), it was a large sized drink (maybe a little smaller than GG's), and like I said, I had extra booze added to it. I would say price wise, the drinks were about the same as others DT/pool side and certainly better than on the strip. Up there I paid 17. for a 12oz pina colada.

As silly as this will sound, it almost pains me to buy any drinks when in Vegas or even AC for that matter, since I can sit at the tables and order them for "free". (But as I am sure most of us would agree, "free" is never truly free when talking about comps/casinos).

 

I plan to try Oscars on my next visit. I seem to often "forget" to eat when I'm in LV, lol. Thanks for the input .

 

I love Oscar's. I'm no food critic but the food is great to me. The real attraction is the view though. It's absolutely beautiful to sit in the "fish bowl" and have all the lights of Fremont out your window. It's only slightly diminished by that Slotzilla abomination.

 

Hey HappyGirl. Thanks for the notes. I'm headed that way in a week and I'm hoping you can answer a few questions for me.

Was the $25 BJ game decent rules? And, without being crass, who was dealing it? Last time I was out there, the $25 pit was the 'bikini' pit. Is that still the case?

Sounds like the pool deck was open. I assume there are loungers/chairs out for folks to sit in? I'll be working for some of the days that I'm out there and I was hoping to spend the early mornings sitting outside, watching the sun rise over downtown. Do you know if they shut the pool down at night? Also, did you happen to see if there were any were near walls that had power run to them?

Now, about this drink... This wasn't "a drink" in the sense of a single 1.5oz serving of alcohol plus an equal amount of mixer, right? This was one of those frozen fruity things in a souvenir plastic mugs that probably had 4-5 servings of alcohol in a before you had them add another 4-5 servings of white rum into it. Is that right? $20 for the equivalent of 10 beers (and a souvenir cup?) is cool . $20 for a single drink at Plaza is...

The $25. game was not in the "sexy" dealer area. It was in the "normal" pit, no sexy dealers (female or male) there, and at the risk of sounding crass myself, there was no sexy going on there at all, lol. The "sexy" dealer area is on your immediate left if you come in the main entrance. It's like a little annex or something. There is only one real pit with varied games, that is where the $25 game was. Head toward the back of the casino and it is on the right side of the main isle. It was a double deck game, dealer hits S17, basic normal rules. I am pretty sure no double after split. To tell you the truth, I would say 90% of the time I was the only person playing at that table. They had another BJ table $5, some other variation of BJ called "World's Most Liberal 21", kind of reminded me of a funked up version of Spanish 21(with all the 10's). If you are interested I have the specifics of the game and I could PM it to you. A few other games were going plus one craps and one roulette. As a side note, I left Saturday morning, so maybe they opened up some other tables Sat evening???

With regard to the pool, I don't think it was opened very late, I want to say 5/6 pm,opening at 9am. Yes, there were loungers. They also had a few lounge like chairs in the pool itself. I also saw bed like loungers around the pool, don't know if you rent them or how they work. I'll attach a picture I took while at the pool. I did have a cabana (which was a "gift" from the host,) so I can say yes I had an outlet but I can not say if they were around otherwise. As for the drink, with the exception of it being a souvenir cup, you are spot on. It was a large multi-drink drink and like I mentioned I did ask for extra rum .

I had a great time! I had read a lot of mixed reviews here and on other travel sites, etc, about the Plaza. I did not know what to expect but I was very pleased. Again, I was comped before I got there, I guess based on some play a few weeks prior but the host was really fantastic. All in all, I am a pretty easy person to please, (my ex-husband may say otherwise) and I don't need to be in something like the Octavious Tower at Caesars (although it is beautiful) to be satisfied. So, for what I like to do when I go to Vegas, Plaza seems to work for me. I know I will be going there again.

I can honestly say I have never paid for a drink while in Las Vegas for just this reason (and the HL lounges). I just don't get it. All that money on alcohol that can go towards gambling instead. Yeah, I have to walk to the casino to get it but is 20 minutes that much of a killer? ...and I love walking through a casino.

Is the pool heated or is there a set closing date with the warm weather hanging on?

 

Yes it is heated and it is lovely.
It is staying open year round.
The food truck and cabanas will be closed during the winter.
The hours are 9 am to 5 pm.

 

How much did the two bedroom suite run a night?

 

Hi zamboni, unfortunately I can't answer that for you, as my room was comped. The only thing I had to put up was a $50 deposit,which was refunded. I can say it was very spacious and it had 2.5 bathrooms. It was basic but comfortable.
