First time lone Female

I love going solo too. Another thing I've found to be cautious about is the sad story people (need money for gas, boyfriend left me stranded) that kind of thing. My last trip I was sitting at a slot and this female was sitting a few over "crying." She was putting it on strong but I never saw any actual tears. Every so often I caught her looking at me to try and get my attention. Ha, not going to happen!! Finally a woman passing by stop and asked her what was wrong. I was trying hard to get her attention so she wouldn't fall victim to this scam. The crying girl laid it on thick about not having any money to get back home and all that. After about 10 minutes, the lady said, "I can't give you money but I can pray for you." Freaking Priceless!!

 

Other posters mentioned this already but I want to stress this - Always tell strangers that you have traveling companions in the next casino or somewhere close by. One other thing I can think of -- try to take a purse that has a shoulder strap to wear across your body for when you are in the casino - or anywhere downtown. And I never take my favorite jewelry or expensive jewelry -- just in case!! If you are out on the strip or downtown late, don't walk alone -- wait if you have to until there's others close by. Someone mentioned "don't flash your cash". Excellent advice! If I need to check to see how much I have, I just go to the restroom. I usually try to have $50 apart from the rest of my money - somewhere easy to grab - so that I'm not pulling out all of my cash at once.

Personally, I would not prefer my wife or daughter to use The Deuce being solo. I love to use it and have not seen any issues personally to justify my feelings. However, as a public transportation mode, even though a good portion of riders are tourists, I see where it could become less than wise to invite any attention being an obvious solo tourist rider even on The Strip. Always keep your wits about you for the worst case scenario. Uber would be my suggestion.

 

The safety issues listed are good advice.
Other things to keep in mind:
Keep hydrated; there is a Walgreen's Store next door to PH to buy water at a cheaper cost (if you don't want to drink tap water from the bathroom sink)
Have lip balm or something just in case you get chapped lips
Wear comfortable footwear if you're going to be walking a lot
Have fun!

 

i agree with everyone here, and i don't know if it was posted, wear a cross body purse (and keep a good hold on it)

 

Wear your green wrist strap if you have one. I'll look out for you. I'll be wearing my wrist strap also.
Hopefully, I'll be in Vegas. I might have to travel to Alabama and/or Baltimore for work for a month or two.

I'm a single guy going solo (also Oct. 25), and find that much of the same good advice applies to single men as well as women. In fact, I've been "hit on" more times this year than the past 30-some all put together!

I'd avoid the Deuce too, but mainly because it's usually jam-packed and slower than a snail. I used Uber for the first time on my Aug/Sept trip and it's terrific. Also, I can't tell you how many times I've seen women hanging purses on their chairs. Don't do that! And after reading a few stories, I even take MY drink with me when I go to the restroom. Check out the nearby "local" casinos (particularly Gold Coast and Orleans) if you'll looking for lower table minimums, 3:2 BJ, and feel like escaping the Strip. Have a great and safe trip!

 

Yes, unfortunately, years ago at the old Sahara. I was dying of thirst so I went to the soda machine with my players card and not room key. Locked out! I looked like a bag lady, no ID so I had to go down to the desk and beg for a key. They sent a security guy up with me to check ID to be sure I was who I said.

A couple more comments I thought of.

I will often go a couple days early to a business trip, conference, or extended family thing. I REALLY enjoy just doing my own thing for a while and not having to work around others' schedules.

I'll agree to disagree about the Deuce bus solo. It's newer, clean, and safe. If you're comfortable doing public transit by yourself in general, you should have no issues on the bus in the Strip and downtown areas. Just use common sense and remain streetwise.

Now back before my first trip to LV (1970s, not solo) my late aunt (MSRIP) told us that Las Vegas was pretty much the safest place there is and not to fear a mugging or purse snatch and such. She explained that if something happened, the casino security folks would not summon the city cops, but send "Guido and the boys" to find the perp and have a "chat" with him. The perps knew it and did not hassle visitors. Nowadays, unfortunately, you do hear of more such crimes against persons so you do have to watch it, just like you would do in any large city like Chicago or NYC. If you're comfortable and know what and what not to do in other major urban areas, you should be fine in LV.

I would advise Uber or Lyft over the bus as well... not to say that bus isn't "safe" - but, with the exception of some of the strip properties, the walk from where you disembark to your destination could be a problem (at certain hours).
Pace yourself on the alcohol. Impaired judgement can lead to many screw-ups.

As mentioned already (but bears repeating) - do not fall for any sob-stories or "sure thing" propositions. Do not go with any stranger (or "new" acquaintance) to your room, to his/her room, or in any cab/Uber/Limo that you are not in control of. If you feel like being a bit crazy with someone you meet, don't take him (her?) to your room... meet them in theirs, (but only after you drop off your bankroll - & purse-items that identify you - in your own room-safe, by yourself). Have nothing more than your room key-card with you, along with any other non-identity items in your purse.

If you're a table-games player, do not accept offers of chips from other players just so you'll stick around. Tell them you'll be back later. Odds are, those "free" chips actually have a price tag.

 

There's a nice big drugstore in the Miracle Mile Shops at PH. That's where I bought snacks and some booze for the room last time I was there. Not sure if the prices are higher there than the drugstores out on the strip but it sure is convenient!

Love that I can buy a bottle of Crown Royal in a CVS or Walgreens rather than a liquor store like we have here in Canada!

 

Also watch out for pairs of overly-friendly men who pop out of nowhere and start chatting. They're the decoys. Keep your eyes peeled for friend 3 and 4 who are trying to make off with your purse or iPhone.

Good shout, I will have friends at PH its just the evenings and non convention days I expect to have some alone time so I have that as a cover . Also the purse strap is something I do here in the UK too so thank you

Ah nice, thank you. I will most likely not keep loads of cash on me and use my card quite a bit, I've also heard of girls keeping money in their bra, just incase! Maybe this is an option haha.

 

I'm sure you will have a great time and just be amazed at what Vegas has to offer. You are staying in a great place to base yourself on the Strip. As for security, inside the casinos there are plenty of staff around if you have any problems. The Strip and Fremont Street are always busy and there are always people around. Just treat like when you are at home and be aware of your surroundings. Just stay where other people are around.
I'm in Vegas as well at that time as I enjoy Halloween in Vegas, I recommend getting Downtown on Halloween night as it's just crazy.

There's already been plenty of good advice offered in the thread, but I'll chime in with a few of my opinions.

Clothing

The most important determination of what kind of clothing you will bring is the weather forecast. Las Vegas can be either hot or cold during this time of the year, but you should always bring clothing for both hot and cold weather. You will want to have some nice clothes ready as well if you intend on going clubbing. Also, if you intend on walking the strip, I would recommend having at least one or two sets of comfortable clothes ready, e.g. sneakers, jeans, short sleeve t-shirts/tees, and a jacket or two.No sense walking the entire strip in heels.

Dining

Las Vegas has some of the best food in the world, and you would be missing out on a lot if you didn't try some of great food that Vegas has to offer. Unfortunately, this is where the whole budget thing comes into play, so it's really dependent on how much you're willing to spend. Regardless, there's good food for all different price ranges, but it would be helpful if you listed how much you are willing to spend for breakfast/lunch/dinner. To me, I feel like most prominent cuisines featured on the strip are: French, Italian, Continental, and Chinese. Also, you've never experienced Vegas if you haven't eaten at one of their buffets.

Gambling

I prefer not playing with noobs, so I usually like to play in the early morning when the limits are low and I'm the only one at the table. It's a superstition thing, but I feel like I win every time I play by myself vs. when I play with other people. However, if you like a vibrant atmosphere at the table, which I have come to appreciate more lately, you'll want to gamble at the casinos around the middle of the strip, like Planet Hollywood, MGM, and Aria, for example. Generally, the farther you get from the middle of the strip, the deader the gaming atmosphere gets. I don't have too much experience with the casinos in Downtown, so I won't comment.

Attractions

Las Vegas has various things to do, at various price ranges. For someone that is going to Vegas for the first time, here's a few:

• Free: Bellagio fountains, Bellagio chocolate fountain, Bellagio Conservatory, Mirage volcano, Caesar's Palace Fall of Atlantis show, Wynn Lake of Dreams show.
• Shows: Cirque du Soleil, Comedy, Magic, Impersonation, Singing, etc.
• Spas: Encore's spa is personally my favorite, but I honestly haven't been to many.
• Clubbing: I don't go much at all, but the most popular ones from what I have heard are XS at the Encore, Marquee at the Cosmopolitan, Hakkasan at the MGM, and Omnia at the Caesar's Palace.
• Arcades: There are still some large arcades where you can play, such as at Circus Circus, Excalibur, New York New York, and Gameworks (off the strip). I personally like to go sometimes to play a few of my favorite titles, like House of the Dead and Time Crisis.
  
• Other: High Roller ferris wheel

Getting Around

Since it's your first time, I would probably recommend walking, free trams (between Monte Carlo to Bellagio/between Mandalay Bay and Excalibur), the Las Vegas Monorail, and Uber. What you use depends on where you decide to go, of course.

Cash or Other Forms of Payment

If I were you, I would plan out exactly how much cash I would need to bring. For me, I generally just use cash for small-time purchases and for gambling. I assume you are coming from out of the US, so I would try getting whatever money you plan on using converted to USD at the best rates possible before you get to Vegas so you don't end up paying a lot of money in fees. For anything within the casino you're staying at or its sister properties, you can probably charge it to your hotel room. For anything outside of that, you'll of course want to have a credit card ready.

Safety

Being cautious and exercising common sense, like the other posters have mentioned will go a long way. Not looking lost can also help ward off some strange folks, but that will require a little planning.

When you leave your room, make sure the door actually locks. A lot of times they don't. Also, put the DO NOT DISTURB sign on the door, even when you are not in the room. And leave the T.V. or music on. This makes it look like you are in the room, thus potentially keeping any vermin away.

Credit cards should be in an RFID wallet or you can put aluminum foil around them. They need to be protected from the scammers scanning credit cards.

Watch out for pick pockets!!! They are everywhere. Make sure your handbag is a zippered handbag, pick pockets hate zippers. Keep credit cards and cash separate in your handbag.

The area you are in is a great location. Do downtown, but in the daytime. The area by the Stratosphere is very sketchy, even in the daytime.

Yes i just found out last night after speaking to my bank that there is no chip and pin on credit/debit cards in the US. So people can just scan it? Wow. Maybe I will keep them in my bra too!!! hahah
