My favorite play in all of football--playing and watching--is the muffed punt.

I love the chaos that ensues as both teams try to possess the ball. Nothing beats a good muff. (Just be careful not to express that too loudly when in the stands! Lesson learned on that one...)

One of my colleagues loves defense. A sack was his choice for favorite play.

I was wondering if other football fans had favorite plays, too...

Thanks in advance for your responses!

I like the defensive angle of the game more..so a well timed interception by the defender eyeing the QB and jumping a route and best of all a blocked FG attempt with all the defenders having a hand up..Esp the old days when the hands were wrapped in tape, whatever and not gloves like nowadays in the freezing cold.

Richard details of the game you cheered too loud are in order!

Darren Sproles returning a punt. Anything can happen and often does. The most exciting player in the NFL. Of course, he's an Eagle.

Probably the best plays cum out of the spread formation.

Then go right up the middle for the score

That is good on it's face, but many still prefer two in the backfield.

Two years ago I was attending a high school football game at my buddy Rob's "alma mater." They were facing one of the top ranked teams :trophy: in their division at the time, so I thought it'd be a fun way to spend a Friday night. It was a two hour drive for me to get there, but found Rob and we managed to get a few of the last available seats right in the middle of the "Home" side of the stands. It was Homecoming, so the rickety, decaying grandstand was packed to capacity with locals excited to see some football and then enjoy the community bonfire and picnic afterwards.

By halftime Rob's home team was already down by four touchdowns. They still had enthusiasm to applaud all the former Homecoming Kings and Queens that were driven around the field in convertibles at halftime. Most from the 1970s and 1980s era(s). There was one past Homecoming Queen--Miss Eleanor I believe it was--who was there who was 86 years old! She was in the red convertible at the end of the procession. The announcer reminded the crowd that she was a retired school librarian, but she still came in every day to listen to the first graders read. There was a tremendous ovation and I caught pieces of the conversations around me. Everyone in the stands seemed to know and adore her.

Fast forward to the middle of the third quarter. Rob's team was 3-and-out again and their punter had a nice punt for a change. And then it happened. :woot: A muffed punt! I was excited. Rob knew that was my favorite play in the game of football. We high-five as Rob's excited for his team's recovery and I'm excited to see a muffed punt.
The crowd was going :woohoo: crazy. Music was blasting over the PA speaker. :headbang: I had to talk loud so Rob could hear me over the roar :woohoo: of the crowd. He tried to tell me something, but he's so soft-spoken I had no idea what he said. I noticed that they were escorting Miss Eleanor onto the grandstand and seating her a little bit in front of us. People nearby were yelling and waving to her, "Hi, Miss Eleanor!" As she was being helped to her seat by some gentlemen I felt like saying something else to Rob regarding the game, so I turned to him.

Just as I started speaking, the music immediately cut out and there was total silence--except for me saying loudly:

"There's nothing like seeing a good ol' muff!"

    A moment of stunned silence,
followed by Rob :haha: laughing his head off,
then the man in front of me beginning to laugh until his wife slugged him in the arm,
and a "Shame on you" look :nono: from a half-dozen folks.

Then the kid's voice asking, "Daddy, what's a muff?" :faint:

    The quick kick!

But seriously, its is sometimes interesting to see games (especially college) from a few decades ago and see some of the weird plays they would run. The fumblerooski! That was insane

I love a good old fashioned fundamentally sound tackle. In last night's Houston vs. UCONN game a linebacker for UCONN nailed the Houston quarterback with a textbook tackle, on a flea-flicker play, one of the best hits I've seen in a long time. It reminded me of Ray Nitschke.

Flea flicker bomb, which doesn't get used very often anymore, or the more common version of it today where you throw to a WR or RB in the flat and he heaves it up the sideline.

A successful goal line stand.......the guys in the trenches pounding each other four downs in a row for a yard of territory.

The bootsie play if the guy really deserves it. I asked an old-time Browns lineman about it, and he denied that they ever did it.

    But they did it.
