I tried this a couple of times. It got me a better view usually,or at least close to the elevators. Once the front desk person took the tip, and hardly said a word with no upgrade. Its been about 10 years since I've tried. I'm staying at Palazzo this time, and I wonder if it's worth trying again.

You shouldn't have much problem getting both of those by asking nicely.

For $20, I can't see that you won't be able to get a high floor room, and one that is close to the elevators.

I've done this twice at Palazzo. First time was my first-ever trip to Palazzo years ago. We paid for the room and the $20 was virtually unacknowledged. She said "thank you" and proceeded to check us in to our booked room. We didn't pay a resort fee, but I think that was also pre-resort fee. Fast forward past numerous trips without doing so.....

On our last trip I thought I'd try it again, mainly because we were checking in on an extremely busy day and was hoping to get in fast. Our room was fully comped and when she saw the $20 she asked if I needed change. I said no change, and she thanked me and started working franticly. She informed me that since we were on a comp she couldn't upgrade us for free, but got out their book that shows the various suites and flipping to an extremely nice one (sorry, I don't recall the name) told me she could upgrade us there for a nominal fee (I think it was $50/night). We use our room sparingly, so I thanked her but said we are fine with what we have booked, but we'd love to get in early if possible. She said she would get us the best view she could and get us in as fast as we could. She gave us the keys and said once the room was free she would call us with the room number.

We went to the casino to play a bit, not more than 20 minutes later she called with our room. It was fantastic service.

How much was attributed to the $20 versus us being extremely friendly and polite (and Gold members) I don't know, but I don't think it hurt.

For me, it was worth $20 to get into our room that fast, and will gladly offer it again in the future for a similar result.

Did this on my trip this past weekend (June 2016). No upgrade, but some freeplay, very early check-in (we got checked in at 10am without paying a dollar) and late check-out. Best $20 I every spent. I also tipped the bellhop $5 (and got a free bottle of champagne...in hindsight, that wasn't that much, but he still took care of me).

Tried this past week at the venetian. There was a long line at the desk so i went to the vip desk (purple card). Gave the person $20 and asked if they had any upgrades available. I was already on a comped room so i didn't expect anything. Ended up with a pretty high floor backside view of the strip and a late checkout. Also got to skip a line so i'd say it was worth it.
fyi Usually when i do the $20 trick i go to the bj table or roulette and put $20 on a hand/spin if I win I do the trick, if I lose no trick that trip.

Checked in to Palazzo on Monday 10/10/16 at 10 AM and although clerk stated our room was likely not ready so early, our $50 tip got us immediate checkin, 2 beds instead of booked 1 bed, higher floor (38), strip view and late checkout on Friday departure day. Definitely worth it as strip view alone is typically $30-$50/night upgrade.

Quick update to this thread. Just got back from a 3 night stay at Venetian. Checked in about 8:30am on Thursday, December 8th. Offered up the $20 sandwich and was rewarded with immediate check-in, a high floor with a strip view, and late checkout on Sunday. Check in early was worth it in and of itself.

Which side of the strip did you get? North towards wynn and palazzo or south? I got a north one but now I want a south view. Wondering if the view is nice.

Faced south out past Harrahs/Caesars/Mirage/etc. Had a great vantage point of the volcano show at the Mirage to boot!

What's the likelihood of having 2 nights worth of resort fees 'waived' via $20 sandwich?

Nearly impossible. I had to play it off -- which ended up being a losing proposition.

Do you folks think the $20 trick would get the check-in to waive the extra 50$ a night for a third person in the room?

Huh? Your paying $50/nt for a third person. I would have told them there's only two. This is vegas a 3rd or 4th person can always end up in your room.

Yeah I wouldn't make it known you have a third person. Get three keys at check in and you'll be fine.
