Hi all. This next trip I'll be taking my boots so I can get into a club. The question I've got is I need to use boot hooks to get them on due to an bad ankle. They're not sharp, but they are long. Does anyone know if that would be an issue? My Google skills are failing.

In case you're wondering what I'm talking about, you can see them here: http://www.dehner.com/pics/largephotos/boot_hook_large.jpg

I have gone multiple times to Horse Shows and
have never had a problem with my English boot hooks, but
if you are concerned, I would call the airline and just ask. Depends
on carry-on or checked bag. They can certainly let you know their policy.
I checked mine on American - I never tried carry-on. With all the TSA
extra security and stuff - they might balk at the carry-on route with them
in your bag. I would not want them to confiscate mine. Knowing their
training - they probably wouldn't have any idea what a boot hook was.

Yeah, I'll be carrying them on. I know they allow knitting needles now, and, they're even less "pointy" than them. But, I might be able to put them in my friends check-in bag. I'll just have to bribe her I guess. ;)

I would default to this list https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/prohibited-items under tools. Specifically the 7 inches requirement. I've had friends who have had scrapbook tools that were not sharp confiscated because they were greater than 7 inches in carry-on (it is 8 inches).

Yeah, that looks kinda scary. :) And, I can see them saying no to the hooks.

It is NOT an airline issue. They might have some rules, but keep in mind that the airlines never looked in your carryon bags.

Only the TSA looks at carryon bags.

I might suggest a google search as this would apply to all airports/cities.

I'm sorry if I was confusing - I thought I said that it depended on carry-on or checked bag.
I know it is TSA scanning on carry-on only. I thought I made that clear. I was trying
to be helpful to the original poster in stating - I have never tried carrying them on - I have
checked them multiple times on American and had no problems. I just said since everything
has changed so much - he might want to call them to see if it is still ok.

    If I was unclear - I apologize.

Actually TSA does scan your luggage too. But mostly they are looking for explosives or hazardous or flammable materials. But I once checked in a lighter and it passed inspection so not sure exactly whey are scanning for.

I'm going to the club at Paris. I normally wear tennis shoes, but I know that's a no-no at the club.

No, I got what you were saying. I had emailed the airline, and yeah, they told me to contact TSA. I've done several searches, but they all talk about niting needles. I might have to actually call them.

You can take 1 lighter on without issue, it's when you have more than 1 they start yelling. And, you can take a Zippo, but not the lighter fluid. I take my Zippo all the time.

They only have an issue with pressurize butane lighter, so you are okay with your common BIC lighter and normal Zippos.

Actually I bought some of those pressurized butane lighters at a show and put them in my luggage with no problems. I probably took 3 of them in my suitcase with no issues. They had butane in them because the seller filled all 3 of them up when I bought them.

This year I bought one of those tasers that look like flashlights (at a gun show - rechargeable types) and packed it in my suitcase with no problems. I hope there will be a gun show during the CES because I wouldn't mind buying a few more of them (they only cost $12). I only bought one of them because I was afraid TSA would confiscate them but a few of my friends and relatives wouldn't mind having one of them.

This taser you have to physically come in contact with someone to "shock" the guy, it isn't the type that shoots out barbs. But then it makes a crackling noise when you press the button. I got into a confrontation with a guy (guy got out of his car because he said I cut him off). I just stepped out of my car with the taser and turned it on once and told the guy to back off. He saw and heard the taser and got back into his car although he was still mouthing off.

Getting through once, or even multiple times is never proof it is okay.

Okay tomorrow, weapons of mass destruction tomorrow. Been there with those hotel corkscrews. Go through 9 out of 10 times,then...wham.
