    My Trip Report

It’s been three months since Trip #46 at Memorial Day. Laurel had a Mastectomy July 8th, and is recovering nicely. We joined Vegas Message Board in May and love reading all the trip reports. We were impressed by the variety of things people do and places they ate; and were surprised at the favorite places we have in common.

She also got a job yesterday after 18 months off. Being 57, we were both content to live on my salary until retirement, but this works out much bette, removing some budgetary constraints we have had during the last five trips! Budget for this trip is $1,550 fixed (hotel, plane tickets, rental car) and $2,100 variable ($210/day for food and gaming).

Things we plan to do this trip: Lots of pool time, Asian Nachos at Grande Lux (Palozzo), Mon Ami Gabi for breakfast, BBQ and craft beers at Ellis Island, happy hour at Level 107 (Strat), possible show or bingo, downtown, last meal at Pub at Monte Carlo, focus our play on Mlife and Total Rewards.

Friday 9/2: Here we go! Had an unusual experience at the Little Rock Airport. Sitting at the gate awaiting the plane, Laurel found $38 jammed between 2 seats! Not an everyday experience. 3 hour flight was fine ($702 fixed, flew free last time). Always seem to have free drink coupons from Southwest, so we each had a drink. Watched “Age of Adeline” on her Kindle. That makes the time go fast. Landing a little rough (2 Our Fathers - 1 Hail Mary). But all was ok. On to Thrifty, as Blue Chip members, we go right to our car. She did not like their selection as she had deliberately rented a larger car for comfort . . . 15 minutes later we drive away in a Chrysler 300 for no additional money-nicely done, Honey. First stop, Lee’s Liquors for beer-wine-whiskey-soda. Second stop, Monte Carlo ($187.80 fixed). We will lose our Mlife Gold status at the end of month, but for now, free Valet and VIP check-in. Only going to make it to 40,000 of the 75,000 points required for Gold. Been good for 2 years. We had upgraded our free room to a Monaco suite for $25 per day. Did this on our last trip and it was so roomy, near elevators, 2 bathrooms, and nice living area. We have a $200 resort credit so plan was to go to Julian Serrano and Bardot Brasserie at Aria and charge it to the room. Unfortunately, resort credit is now only for monies spent at Monte Carlo--good thing we found out right away. We were joined by our Vegas Friends Mindy and Bill and had a nice meal at the Pub at Monte Carlo. Our last dinner ever there, as it closes on 10/2 to be replaced by ??? We used our My Vegas Reward for BOGO Beer Flights . . . full price would not be a bargain. Just hung around here for the evening. She worked on increasing our “coin-in,” I drank beer and worked on my picks for Saturday College football games. Previously, I labored over the choices, but now I select by rolling two 8-sided dice. Much easier and it garners the same result. Both in bed by 11:00 pm. (Variable Expenses $170).

Saturday 9/3: Up at 6:30. Nice to get 7 ½ hours sleep. I have been trying to keep up the new trend of getting more sleep for the last few trips. The later you stay out, the more opportunity to have a not so good next day (physically and financially). Normal activity would be to run down to McDonald’s before pool. Not anymore as McDonalds and MGM have parted ways. Last trip I walked to McDonalds at PH, not doing that again. So we had breakfast on the patio at the Pub after I marked our pool chairs. Plus that helped us use up the $200 resort credit! I had the pulled pork benedict and she had bacon and eggs. So peaceful just sitting watching folks walk by in their swimsuits. Spend the next 4 lovely hours enjoying the Monte Carlo pool experience, including the Wave Pool and Lazy River. Rest of the afternoon was spent watching football while she gambled. Joined Bill and Mindy at Ellis Island BBQ for dinner. One of the musts each trip. We got the American Casino Guide (ACG) 2 weeks ago and got a free t-shirt, $10 match play and Play $10 get $10 slot dollars for Ellis Island. We love the $2.25 craft beers. As always, food and fellowship was fabulous. I dropped her off at Aria on the way back and I valet parked at Monte Carlo and walked to meet her. Aria always feels like home for us. We used to stay here every trip, but with only one of us employed, been trying to keep things on a budget. We will stay here again, though. We hung for a couple of hours and both actually won - nice. I sat outside on my Pigeon drinking beer and smoking my cigar and listening to music (totally in my element). I also won a $79 Yabba Dabba Doo bonus on Flintstones and watched football. Topped off the evening with a Manchu Wok snack at Monte Carlo food court (great for soaking up the alcohol!) In bed by 11:15 and happy that football was kind to me today. (Variable expenses -$68).

Sunday 9/4: Like yesterday, staked out pool chairs & had breakfast on the patio at the Pub, and then hours basking in the sun. Felt a bit melancholy though since today is the last time we‘ll ever do this at Monte Carlo. We‘ve spent many hours poolside in the past enjoying the pools and the “scenery.“ They are closing this area down too, to be replaced by ???? Talked to our waitress Eileen (a 20-year Pub vet) and she’s concerned about her future. Only hung at the pool til noon today. Happy the room was already made up. One of my few pet peeves is if I remove my “do not disturb“ sign, and I‘m away from the room for 4-5 hours, why isn‘t my room made up?. To celebrate, we pre-packed for tomorrow’s move to Linq and then took a nap. All that fresh air wiped us out! Rest of the day we hung around here. Took the tram to Bellagio and looked at the flowers. Then we marveled at the number of people in the check-in line. Must have been an hour wait. Played a while here, then back tracked to Aria for a bit, then back to Monte Carlo. Had happy hour at Andre’s. We each had a couple drinks and then split 4 appetizers which finished off the resort credit nicely! Sadly, this place is also closing too. Methinks Monte Carlo is going to be a construction mess for awhile. Glad we traded this out for Luxor in November. Haven‘t stayed at Luxor in years. Not much else to report, she had a nice $112 win on Buffalo Gold to cover some losses. I watched Nascar and football, and oh yeah, got totally trashed. Wasn‘t by design, it just happened. Brought my bottle of whiskey to Bellagio, switched to beer during and after dinner. It was bad enough that she shagged me off to bed at 9:15! Good thing too, one of my credo’s is don’t ruin the next day by the current days behavior. I was close to breaking that one tonight. (Variable expenses $86).

Monday 9/5: Moving day #1. Plan was to check out of Monte Carlo and use My Vegas Rewards for 2 Aria Buffets. It’s Labor Day, tough, so got good for today. Lady was nice enough to extend the buffet til tomorrow. So, we checked out and had a fabulous breakfast at Mon Ami Gabi (another must). Laurel saw on VMB thread about Lettuce Entertain You coupons, so she signed up and poof! We got the coupons. So we got $20 off her Quiche Lorraine and my Corned Beef Hash and Eggs. Too early to check-in to Linq so we used our VIP All Access Pass from Total Rewards and spent 3 hours at the Rio Pool. I had checked out this pool last trip while she played at Gold Coast. Laurel‘s never stayed here so never saw the pool area. We get plenty of offers for Rio but we‘ve never tried them. Now that‘s she‘s seen the pool, things may change. Lots of patio space and chairs with 4-5 different pools. We even saw people do the zip line between the towers right over our heads! I‘d do that! On to the Linq ($163 fixed for 4 nights). I had to change my Monte Carlo Fixed since they didn‘t charge us the Monaco Suite upgrade à nice! But we went from a 2-bath suite to the smallest room in town! No problem, though. We had stayed here last November and knew what to expect. I was happy that although the sign said Valet was only for Diamond and Seven Stars members, they also had room for hotel guests. Linq and Flamingo parking ramps are the worst and tiniest in town. Especially considering the yacht my wife rented for us! Our room is on the second floor at the end of a hall (strike 1), the view is a downspout and ductwork, and strewn with trash (strike 2), and we get no cell phone service in the room (strike 3). However it is 20 steps away from the pool (home run!) So she is happy, so I just shut the drapes! Hung around here tonight, Bill and Mindy joined us for dinner at Guy Fieri’s. After dinner, they gambled and I watched football. Florida State (-6) vs. Mississippi. Mississippi was up 28-6 at half time, and Florida State ended up winning by 11. Nice $40 win. After 4 days, I am ahead $92 and she is down $238, Business as usual. (Variable Expenses $173).

Tuesday 9/6: Up at 6:00. Linq spa on the table, I do that occasionally in the early morning. More of a fall pursuit when pool time’s at a minimum. Instead I decided to walk to Caesar’s and check out how to get to their pool. That’s one we’ve never been too, and now with the VIP Access Pass, it is available to us. Took awhile to findàthey call me “Magellan” for a reason. Not open until 9:00, but I found a way to back door it. I sat in a nice comfy chair and wrote in my journal…for 3 minutes. Yep, got kicked out. OK, back to Linq. Now time to get her up so did 10 spins on $1 Wheel of Fortune. On my 6th spin, I won $50, maybe I can milk that win all day! Short Linq pool visit (3 hours) as we needed to redeem free Aria buffets. Buffets are NOT our preferred dining experience, but Aria is very good. I liked that we were able to use the short line instead of the Disneyland line the others were waiting in! Played here for a while and then drove to Orleans. One weird thing happened while here. I like to relax at Race Books and bet $5 show bets. On a race at Mountaineer, the horse I bet on won . . . It paid $17.80 to win, $6 place and $18 to show! I’ve seen crazy payouts on the dogs, but never like this one on horses. I think someone lost a bundle on a show bet they put on the favorite. Thanks for that $45 win! I lost my ACG match play, so I’m now 0-2. I tried to put in on the Don’t Come at craps but the guy said I couldn’t do that. Not sure why not, it’s an even money bet, but to avoid a confrontation, I lost in on a hand of black jack instead. On to Venetian. Joining our Vegas people for “Puppet Up.“ She had just joined a service called “House Seats” for $169 for a 2 year term. For one fixed fee, it lets her get up to 4 free seats to select shows. It lists different shows daily and she has to “claim” them online and show up at the box office before the sow. The show was funny and we all had a great time. It was interesting to see how they maneuvered the puppets and the improv was clever and funny. Wish the show well. Back to the Linq, never did have dinner, so ate snacks in the room. Checked out if we could join House Seats, but it’s only for Vegas residents (although there are Reno/Tahoe, Austin and Phoenix options too). Too bad, with how often we come to Vegas, it would have been nice. (Variable Expenses $56).

Wednesday 9/7: Vacation now ½ over, but don‘t feel too bad. We‘ll be back for another 10-day trip in 9 weeks. Three lovely hours at pool. Left just in time to miss the real loud booming music that pervades almost ever pool. We can take it, but nice to leave it too. After (too) much discussion, decision was to have lunch at the Eiffel Tower. We had that $30 Lettuce Entertain You coupon expiring today (thanks VMB!) Not sure why we hesitated, it‘s always fabulous. I had the chorizo eggs benedict and Laurel had the Lemon Chicken with Parmesan. Fine dining while watching the world go by. How lucky are we to experience this multiple times in our lives. Hung around Paris for awhile, she gambled while I went to the pool and took a power nap In the shade, really great. On to Hooters. Haven‘t been here in awhile. There was actually a five year stretch (2006-2011) during which we had our Thanksgiving dinner here! Didn‘t stay too long. I used a $10 match play (ACG) and finally won one. Laurel lucky to break even here, on to Gold Coast. Been coming here the past couple of trips after a long hiatus. Spent awhile here as we do. Lost my $10 match play (now 1-2). Sat in the Race Book, drank some beer . . . Plan was to leave here and have Asian Nachos at Grande Lux (Palozzo), but I knew she really wanted Ping Pang Pong at here at Gold Coast. We highly recommend this for any lover of Chinese food. She had Orange chicken and I had Kung Pao chicken, both were outstanding. When we left, sun had just gone behind the mountains, so we drove around a bit enjoying the gorgeous evening. Sometimes it is the little things that are the most memorable. Back to Linq, I went to room to drop off crap and much to my surprise, our room was still not made up. I called and they handled it. Afterwards I gave our Chinese leftovers (including rice, chopsticks, soy sauce, napkins, and utensils) to a homeless guy. We headed to Casino Royale. Haven‘t stopped here in years! They had a Lose $20, get $20 in freeplay promotion (I‘ll bite), besides, tough to beat $1 beers. She lost her $20 and I turned my $20 into $34. Was I smart enough to walk away? Nope, I lost it just so I could get the free $20 which I turned into $21. So I won $1, lets get another beer!!! We actually had a real nice time here together. She likes it when I sit and play beside her. By 10:15m we were snacking on 4 White Castle sliders and an order of onion rings inside Casino Royale. Back to Linq and she went to bed. I stood outside, smoked my cigar and drank my last beer of the day and watched the masses go by. Was the perfect day. But alas, the day was far from over, at 11:41 pm on my way to bed, I did my usual 10 spins on $1 Wheel of Fortune. On spin 5, I got the wheel for $25. On Spin 6 I got (5x ) (5x) (Red 7) for $1,500. What the ???? My third lifetime W2G (August of 2003 and May of 2013). Next hour was a whirlwind. Had to go back to the room to get my Social Security card from the safe. Woke up Laurel and tried to tell here what happened but all I heard was “shut the damn lights off!” Back downstairs and got my hand pay (all $100s). I knew protocol was to tip, but not going to give her $100. I figure she would have given me one of my $100s in $20s but no. Luckily I had $50 on me so I have that to here. Not sure what here expectations were. I’ll try to keep my life black and white, tipping on a jackpot is not one of those occasions. I also forgot to play it off, and left it for the world to see. (Variable Expenses -$1,271, I didn‘t see that one coming!).

Thursday 9/8: Word to the wise - if you ever want a terrible nights sleep, get a W2-G on your way to bed! Up at 7:00 for good. Had McDonald‘s for breakfast (noticed there was one between Casino Royale and Harrah‘s last night). Since they were pulled out of MGM properties, we‘ve not thought about it. 9:00 found us at the pool, dedicated to one of our favorite pursuits. With our tans reinvigorated, it was time to get on with the day. Unlike yesterday, not too much excitement today. Went to Palazzo for Asian Nachos at Grande Lux. We always get here one time each trip to indulge in our all-time favorite appetizer, and we highly recommend it. Meeting Bill and Mindy and her family for dinner so that is all we had. Another reason I like Grand Lux is that they have never said anything if you bring in a drink from the casino. Lots of places tell you to finish it or leave it. We had some time to kill, so we drove out to SunCoast for an hour and donated there also. 7:00 dinner at Cheesecake Factory on Rampart. By driving out to see them, that saves them from driving out to meet us on the strip again. We just split an entrée between us and enjoyed the fellowship. Laurel and I have 1) no children, 2) no parents still alive and 3) no siblings (ok 1, but that‘s a long story), so it‘s nice that these people adopted us like their own. It‘s our Vegas Family. Back to the Linq and settled in to our usual patterns: She gambled and I watched football 1st NFL game of the year, Carolina -3 & 40.5 vs. Denver). I took an under and was lucky that I got it early at 41. Carolina missed a last second field goal so it stayed at 41 (21 to 20). It was a lot of fun and I saved $44. Rest of night I drank beer, stood outside and watched people, listed to my Ipod, and smoked my cigar. It was a perfect night. I did not even plunk a nickel. Laurel did her best to rack up Total Rewards Credits -- good girl. (Variable Expenses $233).

Friday 9/9: Slept in ‘til 8:00. Woke up in a Tylenol PM stupor. Took 2 before bed since I wanted a good 8 hour sleep after the previous night‘s restlessness. No Linq pool this morning, since it is Moving Day #2. Took awhile to expedite the bugout and didn‘t pull out until 10:30. That took breakfast off the table and big issue was where to go to eat. “What do you want?” “I don‘t know what do you want?” That went on for an hour while we packed up. I finally hit on something that struck a cord . . . Wicked Spoon at Cosmo. So that’s what we did. Been there a couple of times in the past and never disappointed. (OK, once we were disappointed when it was closed between lunch and dinner and ended up at Holsteins. Not that impressed for the price we paid). As usual, the buffet was fabulous and for the variety of “fine“ food I consider it a value. We like the Cosmopolitan, but don‘t come here too many trips. It has no affiliation that does us any good (like Total Rewards/Mlife/Boyd). After a quick stop at CVS for beer and soda, it was onto Excalibur (room is free + $104 fixed for resort fees) for our last 3 nights. Losing our Gold Status in 21 days, so one of our last free valets. Being downgraded to Pearl 10/1, we were mildly surprised that VIP check-in includes Pearl status here. Staying at Aria and Luxor on Trip #48 (in 9 weeks) so need to check out the Pearl benefits - not always the same services at different venues. More surprises happened when check-in lady said our resort fees had been waived for our stay. Nice! Room is nice as always. Laurel disappointed when we discovered it was all the way at the end of the hall. So, I headed to the pool and she did not want to make the effort (can‘t blame her, it‘s a long walk for someone with a cane). We love the Excalibur pool. Lots and lots of deck space, but the real winner is the adult (age 21+) pool. For $10 per person, you get a cushioned chair for the whole day. There is an abundance of sunshine year-round. Most other venues have limited sunshine, especially in November (when sun always seems to be behind the buildings) Biggest surprise is that I found out the adult pool is open 9 am to 9 pm (rest of pool closes at 6). Good to know. Hung around Excalibur for the night. She has $250 free play with our room, so she worked on using that. I watched football and drank beer. I won again, this time on Louisville (-15.5). You can always count on Bobby Petrino to run up the score! For the week we’ve been here, I’ve only lost 1 straight bet. Had late night dinner at Popeyes in the food court. After that I went and assumed my cigar smoking position on the bridge between NYNY and MGM. The last couple of nights at the Linq, the place I stand has masses of people moving around. At this venue, it’s a lot of people standing there and taking pictures down Las Vegas Blvd. Always a pleasure to see hoards of happy people. (Variable Expenses $126).

Saturday 9/10: Two full days of fun left, drank a bunch last night, but no residuals, only had a minor issue one morning this trip. Before bed last night, we discussed getting a My Vegas BOGO for Excalibur Breakfast Buffet before hanging at the pool. Still sounded good in the morning. While executing my early morning routine (coffee/journal writing/walk of shame observation), I walked to the buffet. $21.99 for brunch! No way I would pay that for an average buffet. We could go back to Mon Ami Gabi or Ri Ra Pub (Mandelay Bay), or Il Fornaio (NYNY) and pay less than that for a memorable dining experience. Of course, we ate the buffet. Once I factored in making her walk to valet, get car, eat, return (paying tips to two valets), of course we got the buffet. How was it? Average. We are not buffet people and this was the 3rd one this trip. I‘m not a fan because it encourages me to overeat and I‘m troubled by all the waste and what pigs people can be. Excalibur ‘s buffet is tainted because when we had breakfast in February of 2015 (when we were stuck 3 extra nights in Vegas due to an ice storm at home), Laurel‘s knee locked up and I had to push her in a wheelchair for the last few vacation days. Anyway, 4 hours poolside. Rented 2 $10 chairs and a $25 umbrella at the adult pool. Nice to see affordable luxury is still available. Like a cabana experience without the TV. I had bet my parlays and early straights yesterday, but as it turned to 2:30 my mind started to turn from relaxation to football anxiety -- time to go. I like the Excalibur sports book. Lots of seats and floor space. There is a new Vegas trend I‘m not a fan of. Whenever they re-do a sports book, they put in cubicles and individual TVs, which discourages fan participation. They look impressive, but they‘re impractical. And people leave all their crap when they depart which either: 1) causes someone else to clean up after them, or 2) makes new people reluctant to sit there. I also like the WestGate Sports book. The atmosphere is electrifying plus they open the showroom and serve cheap hot dogs and beer. WestGate also has giveaways and plenty of seating. Too bad the casino has downgraded since the days we used to stay there under previous owners.

I got to Excalibur’s sports book just in time to see Western Kentucky (+28.5) score a back door cover touchdown with 20 seconds to go. I think I was the only one cheering, Living in SEC territory, It also gave me pleasure to see Nick Saban crying on the sideline. Time for (my) game of the day, Arkansas (+10) vs. TCU . . . it was an afternoon full of ups and downs, and then ups when Arkansas won in double overtime! Plus I found a couple drink tickets at the sports book. I don’t place large enough bets to garner any. So I look at finding drink tickets as my sport. Spent the greater part of the night next door at Luxor as she wanted to get her My Vegas Rewards free appetizer at Public House. She regretted it after the she lost $100 gaming and the people movers weren’t working on the walk back to Excalibur. All I did was watch football, find 4 drink tickets and sit in the “pervert” section and watched all the pretty people queuing up to get into LAX nightclub. (Variable Expenses $167).

Sunday 9/11: It’s the 15th anniversary of the day that changed the way Americans live our lives. It is also the first Sunday of NFL action, the kneeling/sitting/standing National Anthem debate has obsessed the national media. Do I agree with what some are doing? Absolutely not. But I do believe that it has brought about a new sense of patriotism in America as a whole. I‘ll wager they did not see that one coming? Ok, off the soapbox…Mindy joining Laurel at the adult pool today, so I got them all set up with chairs and an umbrella ($55). They’ll sit and talk for hours while I watch football inside. I‘m a huge Packer fan (that’s the Cheese portion of my screen name “CheeseHog,” the Arkansas Razorbacks are the Hog portion). Even though I always watch the game alone, there are lots of folks to bond with. I have the Packers -5.5. I always do my parlays and straight bets the previous day so I don‘t have to stand in long lines. I see they are now -4, oh well. Sports Book atmosphere always electric on football Sunday. At least most people are happy and excited at the onset. Packers win an exciting contest 27-23 (I lose my bet, but I‘m still happy). At least they won and it was a lot of fun.

I didn’t watch the afternoon games, I went to the pool with the girls for an hour. Then we packed up most of the stuff for tomorrow’s bugout home, and took a well needed nap. We haven’t taken the car out since parking it Friday afternoon, so we got gas and decided to use our final My Vegas at Nine Fin Irishmen at NYNY. Drake playing tonight at T-Mobile, so traffic was a nightmare getting in. I’m excited Las Vegas is getting a hockey team, but wonder what traffic repercussions will ensue. At NYNY she played and I grabbed a beer, walked back next door to Monte Carlo. When we stayed here last weekend and ate at Andre‘s, I forgot to take a picture. It will close 10/2 like the Pub and pool. I talked to the Maitre D for a bit, told him of the good times we had here and wished them well. Time for dinner . . . Our $35 comp in hand, we sat out on the patio and enjoyed a fabulous dinner. I had the Herb Braised Chicken and she had Fish and Chips. Nine Fine not on the Must list but certainly a preferred eatery. We get here 2-3 times during the 30 days we spend in Vegas each year. Back to Excalibur. Valet full (thanks, Drake) so had to use the self park and try to figure out the new system. When we go Pearl on 10/1, this is our new reality. Didn’t do much after dinner, I make it a habit not to overindulge on our last night Laurel qualified for one entry in “Million Dollar Block Party” and she got . . . $5 free play. Added to the $75 freeplay she had left of her $250, she turned that in to $59 cash. This put her back under $500 for the 10-day trip - good girl! (Variable Expenses $19)

Monday 9/12: Time to head home. We’re very organized, so rarely any issues. Variable figure has been low the last couple days since mostly room charge, which makes today’s amount seem larger. I actually won 9 of the last 10 trips to Vegas. Even though I don’t gamble a ton during these trips, that’s still a great average! Close the books on Trip #47.

Trip Review: How’d we do? Well on our to do list, we skipped downtown and Level 107, but hit everything else. How’d we do financially?

Fixed Costs: Budgeted $1,550 Actual $1,384
Variable Cost: Budgeted $2,100 Actual ($80)

    Total Trip Cost: $1,304

Great report. Ya'll are some go, go, go folks! Love your eclectic mix of dining choices. Hard to go beat McDonald's and Eiffel Tower in the same trip. Great hand pay story too. Can't believe you weren't given bills of smaller denominations than hundreds.

Yes, TXactuarial, I had to have both my driver's license and my social security card . . . and both were upstairs in the safe!

@TXactuarial - In my experience, no.
I've won hand pays at many Vegas properties and only had to provide photo ID such as driver's license and my social security number - not the actual card (I never carry my SS card with me having memorized it years ago). Once a property has my SSN on file, they only require my photo ID on future hand pays since the rest is in the system.
