The threads about timeshares and intentional airline bumping got me thinking (yes, dangerous, I know) :) about various things people do on vacation, particularly in Las Vegas, which I just don't seem to understand, such as ...

    1. Spending hours (a couple to several) attending a timeshare sales pitch for some modest freebees. Enough said already in the threads.

    2. Intentionally trying to cash-in on being bumped on an overbooked flight. When I'm on vacation, I want to get there!

    3. Those who bring shampoo/lotion etc. with them and then eagerly squirrel away all of those those little bottles each and every day and haul them back.

    4. Those who travel to distant places and insist on dining at the "usual suspect" chain places, whether fast food, midscale, or upscale. When I'm in Las Vegas I want something VEGAS and not something that's invaded every metro area known to humanity! Ditto with those who go absolutely ga-ga when they get the word that yet another chain is invading the area!

    5. The limo from the airport to the hotel. I suppose there's a novelty factor for those who have never ridden in one ("First time in a limo, DOCTOR?") :) but I can't envision "relaxing" and enjoying a brief ride for a premium price only to be blasted back to reality schlepping the bag through the check-in line ("I'm sorry, your room won't be ready for another two hours.") and unpacking and such. I just want to get it all done with and then relax! :)

Any others? I'm sure I'll think of another just as soon as I hit SEND. :)

Good ones. I do enjoy doing things that I cannot do at home. To each his own though so I try to live and let live. BUT, since you asked, I do understand being frugal but the effort it seems to take to catch a bus around Vegas is something I don't quite get. Maybe it's the novelty of rubbing elbows with locals, you know seeing the "real" side of Vegas.

I do not fall into any of your categories above. I do have certain places I like to visit and eat such as; Buffets and Resort Dining.
I'm not big into Fancy Pants - Art on a Plate Dining. I like going to Shows, Spas and sometimes renting a Car for a day to explore.

    1. Agree.

    2. Not something I do personally, but if your schedule is flexible, why not?

    3. Does your travel partner do this? Otherwise, somewhat curious on how you would know whether people do this frequently....do you have friends that brag about how much soap they jacked on their recent trip?

    4. Agree, though I can't say that I've never grabbed a mcdonalds breakfast in the interest of saving time, e.g. wanting to watch a 10am NFL game but knowing I gotta get something in my stomach before I start drinking for the day.

    5. Regarding the premium price, I would think that the vast majority of limos are for comped players, or paying groups on a special trip, such as a bachelor party. I agree that paying full price for a 15 minute limo for no good reason is pretty strange.

Also agree with love gas about the buses.

My addition would be clubs, which isn't specific to vegas, but a big part of the scene there these days. I wouldn't go to one if you told me I could skip the line and gave me free bottle service, so the fact that people actually pay hundreds or thousands for this blows my mind.

We each have our own, but....

Shopping in Vegas - unless you come from somewhere with stores or Amazon.

Limo from airport is a bit of a stretch, but what is really crazy is doing limo up and down the strip. Walk or cab/uber it.

Clubs - I will never get this. Apparently I am not cool enough since thousands do it every night.

Sleeping 4 to a room - no way in hell. Ever. I want some decent sleep so I can get back out into the action.

I agree on 1,3,4 and am neutral on 5.

2 I wouldn't do at this stage in my life because vacation days are the scarce resource, but if retired I totally would give it a try, so I get it.

I'll leave out most of my "don't get" list as they are things that have been debated on here too many times already.

But I will say the one I don't get is the hoops people go through to "maintain a relationship" with their host. Seems ass-backwards to me.

I can explain "the Bus thing" in one word.
    Alcohol.
In Vegas - I'm either going somewhere for a BUZZ ...or..
coming back from somewhere BUZZED !
    Besides.....
    I hate dealing w/ a car = parking/driving/traffic/pick up / drop off.
However.......when I explored the Valley - many years ago - You have to have a car.
    *
A long line into a buffet.
If i see one ?......I just go elsewhere.
I don't care to wait on line ? ....in Vegas......NOW !...I want it ALL !....NOW !
    *
    Match Play.
Why go out of your way.......or spend the money to get there....for a $5 match Play ?
If you have nothing else to do ?...okay.
I've got other things to do.

The best Vegas "habit" I read ?
    Years ago ----
The lady who transported buckets of her own quarters for her slot play.
    ?
To this moment.......I just don't "get it" ?
Amazing post - that was !

I can explain the chain thing, sometimes chains really aren't everywhere so if I'm in Vegas just like traveling to any other city and I see a chain everyone has been talking about but is not where I live then I go. Just like when I have guests at home they not only want to go to things unique to Phoenix but they also want to visit famous chains they don't have at home.

I'm sure nobody will agree with me on this one. I don't understand staying awake until the wee hours of the morning. The casino doesn't close. Alcohol served 24 hours. The slot machines, table games, and beer will all still be there when you wake up. Why is it a badge of honor to have as little sleep as possible while in Vegas? Why do people want to come home from a vacation, exhausted?

I truly do not get why anyone plays 6:5 "blackjack".
I do not understand why anyone would ever give the CD guys on a the walkways, or the timeshare hustlers the time of day.
I cannot fathom how anyone would ever be naive enough to think that "This girl to your room" means the actual girl on the cover of the porn-flyer will come to your room.
I do not get the appeal of the 'Big 6 Wheel'... why would anyone ever play that thing when a real roulette wheel is 10 steps away?
I do not understand how any woman (& their SO) can ever justify getting upset when a guy notices her cleavage that she has intentionally drawn attention to. We're guys, after all!

I get it, I get it all, but logically some of it confuses me.

Years ago I would always rely on transit services, and rarely would I spend money for a cab, particularly if I was traveling solo. I'd take a shuttle one-way from the airport to the hotel, and I'd take buses almost everywhere. I took cabs to the airport because they're ready when I'm ready, I stopped gambling on the shuttle pick up at the hotel many years ago.

I spent far too long getting where I wanted to go, and back, by bus, so when I had to rent a car in 2011 to get to where I wanted to go during a trip, I was finally sold on the idea of renting my own vehicle. It's not for everyone, but it makes a ton of sense for me.

I get that people want to drink enough that they're unable to drive safely, but that's not me. I might drink too much one night, but that's the exception, and that happens on evenings when I'm done driving. I drink more than I normally would on vacation, but I don't drink eight times as much as I'd normally drink during a Saturday night back home.

I get people want to drink all day and feel an all-day buzz, but I can't do that. I won't feel good after doing that for a day, and I don't want to spend a day recovering while on vacation. The days of mass consumption are behind me, and yet I enjoy Vegas every time I go.

Among several I have, my top three are:

    Shopping.
Excessive drinking (to the point of idiot-acting, incoherency and hangover - especially if you're over 30 years old).
Waiting in excessive lines to eat - anywhere.

Bringing small children to Vegas. And when they do the children being out and about at midnight or later.

Considering walking or taking a bus to/from the airport. You just spend what I assume was a couple hundred on a flight and you can't spend $15 or $30 for a uber/taxi?

    Shopping. I hate shopping.

I am not a foodie, so if I'm staying somewhere where there is fast food - I'm all over it. Plus I actually like fast food, and don't eat it much at home, so to me a quarter pounder with cheese from McDonald's is a treat.

Exerting energy to save money. I'm not criticizing - it's just not something I would do. I'm on vacation, and basically lazy, and plus my stay is usually comped, so I just can't imagine walking to Walgreens to save on cigs, chips, pop - whatever. Or finding that ATM that doesn't charge 4.99.

Spending valuable vacation time waiting in line to see the inside of a pawn shop. If I'm going to a pawn shop in Vegas (never have), it's because things have gone very, very downhill at the casino.
