Today I went for a walk in the heart of Amsterdam, where I live and I came across some lovely typical Amsterdam sights, which I like to share with you.

This is what I see, when I step outside the front door. I'm still in love when I come home on a sunny day like this.

A lot of people with their boats on the water today.

Not so much Amsterdam, but very typical Dutch!

    Just a pretty picture.

The swan is enjoying the sunny day as well (he told me so).

As parking space is expensive and hard to find in the city center, people come up with the most inventive solutions.

In Amsterdam - and the Netherlands in general - you see bikes everywhere. If you look well (or just enlarge the picture lol), you see on the blue box two stickers from The Bulldog, a very well known chain of coffeeshops and later also cafés, hotels, souvenir shops and what not more.

This kind of sight will never get boring.

I hope you have enjoyed the pictures! And maybe you have some nice ones too, to show off where you live?

I've always thought Amsterdam looked like a wonderful place to just wander around and take in the sights. It's very photogenic. I love the bike loaded up with cheese.

    Thanks for sharing these!

Great photographs. Very beautiful. I hope I might visit one day. Looks like I'll be in and around Vegas in December. Any chance you will be there?

    Great photos.....thanks :):):)

How long is the weather decent, I think I would really enjoy a visit but not sure I can afford the high season rates.

Europeans really know how to do vacations correctly in the summer, is it still reasonable to go in October weather-wise. ?

I also like Amsterdam. Visited many times.
Amsterdam and Las Vegas also have something in common:
Schiphol and McCarran are the only two airports with casino.

Visited Amsterdam in July absolutely lovely place. So much to see and do.

Went the casino a couple of nights there also. Think it was called 'Holland Casino'.

    Would love visit Amsterdam again.

    Thank you, Rusty!

The weather in the Netherlands is not very reliable. For example last Sunday it was cool (around 65) and raining all day, while now it's hot (almost 90) and sunny all day.

Temperature wise it will be fine I guess, if you don't mind to wear a jacket. But it rains a lot here, no matter which season, so that could be a deal breaker?

PS: I guess with high season rates you mean for hotels, yes?

For me also Amsterdam and Las Vegas have a lot in common. They both attract the same kind of fun loving people and they are both a city of their own, not representing the country they are in (if that makes any sence?).

Haha yes, those cyclists ride as if they own the streets. Our laws are in favor of the more vulnerable, so if a bike hits your car and it's their fault, you as the car driver are responsible for all the damage.

Regarding casino's in the Netherlands: We only have state casino's, profits go directly to the Dutch treasure and casino personnel gets paid from the tips (tronc). That's also why they cheer louder when you win, hoping for a good tip lol (total of tronc gets divided over all staff according to their level). Not sure if the same in Vegas, but when they get a tip, they will say "merci pour les employés" (thank you in name of the employees). Holland Casino has the legal monopoly on gambling in the Netherlands. But there are rumours that it will be sold and no longer state owned (but I don't know if this is true).

Visited Amsterdam with my daughter and her inlaws last summer. I can't wait to go back and take my husband. We had my 10month old grandson so I didn't hit any casinos or places where he shouldn't be. Really want that adult trip soon. Hmm, maybe I should do some flight searches today.

    Haha, yes you should!

One of the things I like very much about Amsterdam is that you can walk everything within the center. No need for a car/taxi or public transport. And if you plan the route well, the whole time is like you are walking through a museum, with the lovely canals, monumental buildings and hidden treasures. Even the Redlight district is a lovely area to walk through, very touristical and not at all dodgy, as you would expect considering what's happening behind the curtains ;-)

TIP: If you look at Amsterdam on the map, you can see how it started as a small setting with a canal around it for protection. As the setting grew, more and more canals were build around it (from inside out: Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht, Prinsengracht, Lijnbaansgracht and Singelgracht). Outside the Singelgracht we have the city ring (or small ring), called S100. Together they enclose the complete center of Amsterdam and that all is easily walkable.

Side note: The names Singel and Singelgracht are a bit confusing, especially because the Singel is very famous, but the Singelgracht is not very well known (the name I mean, tbh I had to look it up myself).

On this picture/map of the city center you can see very well what I mean:

Yes, for high season I meant hotel rates. I will take a look at Expedia and see waht they have to say.

I looked up the latitude for Amsterdam, 52* North, I live near Seattle Washington at 49* North so I am guessing the weather is somewhat close with the exception of mid winter.

One of the things that really appeals to me is that Amsterdam is such a walkable city, can't beat excercise AND a beautiful historic city.

Thanks again for the photos :):):)

We visited a few years ago in November, rented an apartment - great location, right on a canal (Herengracht - it was a canal house built in the 17th Century!!) It snowed quite a bit during our trip and we loved to curl up in our apartment with a bottle of wine and watch the cyclists go by outside the windows! Also managed to stumble our way home from a few amazing bars (and quite amazingly NOT fall in the canals ;-) We loved our trip. So many places to visit, not sure when we'll be back, but we absolutely recommend it!
