Are the safes supplied in Casino rooms really safe to leave your bankroll in whilst your not there?Obviously they have to be able to be opened by staff if you leave them locked when you finish your stay there.Carrying the entire bankroll on you all the time is a real pain and somewhat dangerous l think.Any comments would be appreciated.

I always use the safe. It's in the resorts best interest to provide a means of securing your valuables. I assume there is a 'master' method to opening a safe, but I'm guessing that that is tightly controlled (e.g. not given out to employees without the 'need to know').

That being said, in June (Bally's) the safe in our room didn't work. By that I mean the bar mechanism would operate regardless of whether you had or had not poked in a combination. We contemplated moving to another room, but opted for just tote the bankroll. Had we discovered this prior to unpacking, we would have opted for another room.

I've never had a problem with the in-room safes. I put my bankroll and watches in there while in Vegas.

    In-room safe for us.
Our room at Sam's Town didn't have a safe. That trip we got a safe deposit box at the cage.

There are people I know that will never use a hotel safe; they think that all employees have access to them and that they are the least safe place to put money and valuables. I've seen sporadic reports and/or reviews over the years on review sites that people had their hotel safes robbed by either employees or criminals.

For me, I always lock my money and anything valuable that will fit in the safe. I have never had an issue and don't really have any proof that the safes are not secure.

If I felt uncomfortable for some reason or my room didn't have a safe, I would likely go down to the front desk and ask them to put my cash in the house safe.

Don't worry about it Townsville..They are safe and it's not like housekeeping opens them up every time a guest leaves one locked. It takes a call to maintenance to open it up.Been there done that.
Just remember the code and how it works is all you need to do..and remember the door of the room locks behind you when you leave to insure your other stuff.

I have put 150 silver strikes and various other cash and valuables in the hotel safe. Never had a worry.

Like jamesxnj said, they are safe and housekeeping doesn't have access to them. Also a lesson learned about 10 years ago. Do not wait until you are ready to leave for the airport before removing your belongings from the safe. Ten years ago "Murphy" struck at a most inopportune time while preparing to check-out. Entered the code and I forget the exact message maybe "FAIL" but it wasn't "OPEN". We tried several times and the safe would not open. Called the desk and they said we had to call maintenance which we did. For the next HOUR we became increasing more anxious about missing our flight. Fortunately maintenance showed up, did their thing, and opened the safe. And all of our belongings were still there as we thought perhaps we never locked the safe and someone (maybe housekeeping) found it open and helped themselves and then relocked it using a different code. None of that happened. Maintenance said that code failures happen from time to time. And BTW we did catch our scheduled flight.

The safe in my room was locked by the previous guests, and I couldn't open it. The front desk sent up a maintenance guy and the head of security. They verified that I just checked in and I agreed nothing in the safe was mine. They opened it using some code and it was empty. They said it happens a lot. I don't think housekeeping has access to any safes.

I would never stay anywhere that did not have a safe. I use it to store my iPad, extra money and other semi valuables. Basically, using the safe is much safer than not using it, IMHO.

The big thing, at least for me, is to always make sure the door closes securely when I leave my room. It is somewhat surprising how often the door does not close all the way shut before I double check it upon leaving. Also, the very first thing I do when I enter my room is lock the latch.....for the same reason.

all hotel safes are digital now, at least in Vegas.
theres no master code to open all safes in the hotel that all the staff knows.
Vegas is, for the most part, a cash town, and there is no safer place to have your cash accessible to you than the hotel safe.

Somebody mentioned above that the guy who can open the safe came with someone from security.....that is the way we have always seen it. Always two people who check our IDs before they do anything.

Since we started travelling a bit more I find myself almost uncomfortable being in a room without a safe. Where else are you going to put everything?

I absolutely always use the safe, as I prefer to carry most of my bank roll vs. using an ATM. (So, at the beginning of the trip I have a good chunk of change in there. Not so much at the end....)

I'm a worry wart, but have never worried about the safe.

I know I've told this story before here. Years ago, Flamingo, checked in and the safe (on the shelf in the closet) was locked. Phoned the desk. They sent up two guys, a techie type with a "cheater box" and a "suit" type. The techie plugged in his magic box and had the safe opened in a few seconds. They looked at each other and repeated "empty" - "empty" to each other and apologized for the issue.

I've never had any issues with room safes over decades of visiting LV.

One time when I did hit a huge RF payout at the old Stardust (hand pay, avec W2G) I asked for a security escort out to my rental car and drove to a local Wells Fargo branch and deposited it. I did not want that much cash on me or in the room and I did have a concern that maybe some clown who witnessed the hand pay might follow. :(

Hey thanks a lot everyone for the replies, will definitely use the safes provided this time.My reason for the query was l was once shown by a hotel employee how to open the room safe by just pressing a button/tab at the back of the room safe.I think it was Vietnam where this happened, push button digital if memory serves me well.Don't know the brand of safe but l am sure they would not exist in the U.S.A. Now for your amusement,Dumb and Dumber were in Sapporo last month on holidays, every time we left our room we made sure that we pulled the door shut,as you do.You know that solid clunk noise your chasing to confirm security of the room.Well on the last day before leaving,my better half got to the room before l got there with the key to open it.She just turns the handle and walks straight in,it had required to have the key to lock the door and we didn't know. Therefore our room had been left unlocked all week.Just so used to the door being locked when pulled closed, lesson for Mr Know It All.Yes it took a while to live that one down.

The only time I ever got locked out of a room safe, security had to come up to the room to open it, and they demanded ID to prove that I was the guest of record in the room. There is no way that just any employee in the hotel would be able to access a safe, at least not in a reputable property.

I'm guessing you haven't stayed at MSS. Their room safes use a key. Something else to keep track of.
(Unless they changed them out recently.)

The only time I did not use the in-room safe was when it required a credit card to swipe and use as the key. (Can't recall where that was though. Maybe not in Vegas.)
I do miss room safes when they're not there.
