Wynn gets Boston Harbor green light

Can't wait to see the new Boston resort. I bet no one from MA will ever go to a CT casino again after it is built.

He picked about the shithole-iest location you could ever think of. There's a huge power plant to the right outside the frame of this picture. It's going to cost a lot to clean up and make it nice, and it's still not a great location, but I'm sure it'll do well. I'll be able to see the construction from my train (that's a railroad bridge running past the top of the site). I'm sure I'll visit once, but it's not going to be a substitute for Vegas.

Love it! I will probably end up working nights there - hoping to transition into hospitality once I get closer to retiring from my current gig. And, kinda hoping that Wynn employees might get a discounted rate at all Wynn resort stays? That was the case when I worked at a hotel in the past (not a casino/resort though).

The smart money would bet that as long as Mr. Wynn and Roger Thomas are involved with the project, it'll be terrific and done right.

I do always wonder about doing a higher end Las Vegas style resort outside of Las Vegas-it can be tricky. (See Atlantic City). There's no doubt that Mr. Wynn will deliver a completely superior product, but he did that with Beau Rivage and the Gulf Coast market could never really support it at the level Beau Rivage deserved. The Boston metropolitan area should be a good market and Boston is still a tourist destination city. But, when you go outside the hotel, you'll still be in Boston and I wonder how good the destination resort component of the market will be. I'm hoping it'll be successful as both a great regional attraction and as a resort for tourists. It's certain that Mr. Wynn is the smartest casino resort guy in the room and that he'll deliver the best product in New England.

The politicians have made it so difficult that I'm amazed Mr. Wynn, or anyone, would still be in the market. It'll be really interesting to follow.

I've been fortunate to watch Mr. Wynn since the Golden Nugget days and we've followed him everywhere. Best bet we've ever made, for sure. I'd keep betting that Boston will be amazing.

I'm lucky to be retired now, so I'll never need to set foot in any East Coast city ever again-we'll keep heading to Las Vegas-but, we'll certainly pay attention and always have a cheering interest for Mr. Wynn's success.

That may well be true, and it will be very interesting to watch. I live just over the MA border in NH, and will likely keep the majority of my play in CT because the non-resident tax rules are much more favorable. I am a pretty low roller, but my higher roller friends from up here will definitely be bypassing Wynn unless MA changes the rules.

 

And the Wynn might open in my lifetime. They are saying 2019 but I think that is overly optimistic as this is Massachusetts and they are still in the business of creating and lengthening red tape.

 

Can't wait for this thing to open. I'll have to limit my gambling there to not affect my Vegas budget, but I'll definitely be heading there to play poker and some BJ from time to time.

And who knows, I may end up bartending nights/weekends somewhere at the resort when it opens!

It'll do fine on it's own, it doesn't have to be a tourist destination or even have a hotel. Do you know how much fucking money lives within a hour's drive?

3.5 miles north. The Wynn location is on the jut of land under the word "Amelia"

 

There's probably enough dough buried in gardens all over Charlestown alone to keep him running.

 

I think it will be so much nicer than anything in CT it stands a good chance of overcoming that. If it is smoke free, that will be heaven for me.
But yes, I think The Steve is finding out just how many folks in MA have their hands out lol

Wow the location reminds me of the MGM being built near me at National Harbor.

This looks like a better hotel property tho'. MGM will only have about 300 rooms.

 

Chuck, I didn't realize that's where it was going to be. I thought it was going to be right on the border of Everett and Chelsea. I swear I remember reading that, but then again, there were many delays and shifts of plans. Even if that was the original target, it probably moved.

That really is a crap location though. There's not really anything nearby, just industrial stuff and vacant buildings, right? I think there's a strip mall with a Pizza Hut I once ate at. It's also not really a place that you would drive by when doing cool stuff in the Boston area, and it's not in a place you would drive by from the airport, or if you were coming from a different state or city.

 

There's a couple of other issues the Massachusetts casinos face that would favor the CT and RI casinos. "Happy Hour", or discounting liquor, is against the law in Mass - meaning no comped drinks. Also, the current tax threshold for gambling winnings in Mass is $600, as opposed to $1200 most everywhere else (including CT and RI).
