My husband & I stayed there last year. But to be honest we didn't play there a lot. How are the table games? any $5.00 blackjack?
I did play quite a lot of slots. But apparently not enough. No offers to speak of. Just discounted rooms for me. My husband did get 3 free nights Sun thru Thur. So I guess its a start.
I'm trying to decide if there is anything there worth going back for?

Thanks westie. I'll check that out.
Thinking of giving VP a try. That's something I have never really played. Someone once told me its a lot different from playing poker.

Very different. Best, to get a VP program and practice. Winpoker is what I have, but there are other good ones out there. Also check Wizard of odds for strategy.

The one thing I'm beginning to like at Sams Town is the overall lack of mega-crowds and the attitude they have. More like Las Vegas in the 1970s and 1980s. Lines are usually short and the employees (most of them) are friendly. They have a real good collection of the machines I like, unlike the places on the Strip which have taken most of them out. They are very generous with comp rooms. The food there is usually good and there's a modest selection. The rooms are very nice, but nothing really high-end by any means.

Cocktail service on the floor is consistently inconsistent but at least it's not a 12-step program in disguise like some other places!

Big down side it it's way out in the toolies!

Oh, if you're a light sleeper or take naps, ask for a room that does not face the courtyard. The roar from that mechanical bear (??) will wake you up.

Thank you Tom. I will check out Winpoker & Wizard of Odds. Don't know if I'll understand it. But I will give it a try.
dmr, you said everything I was hoping to hear. I like laid back & friendly.
The Orleans used to be our home casino. But I had a hard time finding any slot machines that liked me:) Guess I'd like to have Orleans pool at Samstown. Then I would be very happy. Thank you for the tip about the rooms facing the show. Not a light sleeper, but I also don't think I would like the roar of the bear.
I am not much of a strip fan. I stayed there a few years ago because of myVegas rooms & free shows. (back in the early days of myVegas) The strips not the same since they added all the overhead walkways & restaurants everywhere they could cram 1.

Have you tried South Point? Their pool is large with a good mix of sun and shade all day. They have a great selection of slots and video poker machines as well as $5 BJ with good rules. (Sam's Town does not permit Doubling after Splitting on the $5 tables.) The slot club generates comps to use for rooms and food.

It is difficult to get comped rooms up front. They like to check your play and comp on the back end.

They have a free shuttle to and from the airport; as they a located so far South, transportation around Vegas becomes an issue. Consider renting a car for a couple of days.

I too like South-point I think because it is not part of a chain and not leveraged they can give the gambler a better deal. Lots of good VP and great BJ rules (usually at $5level). I'm not much for slots but my wife likes to play there. Comps are fairly easy from the pit. Clientele would be similar to Sams Town. Unless they have a horse show going on then there are lots of Cowboys/gals.

The bear at Sam's Town (who used to stand up and sing Elvis' "Blue Christmas" during the Christmas show) is gone and a new, larger, and somewhat more ferocious bear is now in place on the rocks to the right of the waterfall. I haven't heard any growling yet, as they were just setting him up this past week (4th of July 2016). I was never bothered by the old bear growling at all.

Either you become very attached to Sam's Town, or you don't. The free shuttles to Harrah's and downtown are a huge plus. It is a full-size bus, not just a shuttle wagon.

    I love Sam's!! Even as a 32 year old....
I love how quite and friendly it is. My wife and I will be staying at Sam's for the fifth time in august.

The breakfast buffet is super cheap. It's not the biggest or most fancy, but fine for breakfast.
Oh, and the 24-hour mc donalds is perfect for chicken nuggets in bed at 2 am ;)

For a cheaper buffet, the one at Sams Town is one of the consistently better ones. It's probably as close to one of the legacy vintage LV buffets as you can get.

It's basic food, American with Mexican and Asian selections and a few Italian. There's enough variety so that even the most picky food creeps will find something that they can enjoy.

Only thing negative I remember was one time when I was irritated by slow drink service and I got up and got my own and got yelled at and I yelled back at them! :) :) :)

Oh, one other thing I remember was a few years back when my one brother got into an argument with the bartender and complained to management (I was within earshot, the bartender was being a genuine jerk!) and got us a round of complimentary bar drinks for the table. :)

I've stayed at Sam's Town twice this year. For me it's a great place to stay. Yes, it's close to nothing, but they have the shuttle service to Harrah's and Down Town.

Pros. It's big, Four bars with full pay video poker, Lots of restaurants. I like the view from the atrium rooms. I average just over $10k a day on video poker and have offers for 5 nights, food, and $100FP. I've used the downtown shuttle several times, they do a great job keeping to the schedule. They often have promos going for easy to earn buffet and other stuff. On my last trip $300 coin-in got me a t-shirt.

The movie theater is cool too. It's nice to get up in the morning grab some breakfast, gamble a bit, then hit up one of the early shows. They don't have the newest movies though.

TGIFridays has a $4 breakfast special, two eggs, meat, hash browns, and toast. No beverage included in the $4.

I have to disagree about Sam's being close to nothing. Lets say almost nothing. Eastside Cannery is a short walk south and Longhorn is across the street. i have never been to Longhorn but Eastside Cannery was nice. The buffet was nothing special but very affordable. I agree with the room selection, request the outside rooms if possible. We ended up with a room right behind the show and yes it was loud! Luckily the last show is at 10pm and we were usually just getting to our room about that time. Here is a picture from outside our room:

Stopped at Longhorn two weeks ago for the $2 Blackjack.. Just had planned to stop in for a second to see 'how bad' it was, and really was positively surprised...
Drink Service was perfect, oftentimes new drinks arrived for the whole table when the first one had emptied theirs..
Blackjack rules were the best I have seen all trip in LV.

Ended up staying for 6 hours playing low stakes blackjack and had more fun doing so than playing $25 at Aria a few days later haha

I would sure hate to have to do that "short walk" this time of year!

(What did we ever do before air conditioning!)

ST will always provide good memories for me. In the mid to late nineties it was the go to place for our group. Probably stayed there 12-15 times in three or four years. Billy Bob's was a must for every trip. Papamios was good Italian for a good price and the deli had a killer chicken salad san. The gambling was also good. One morning before golf, two of us had bacon and eggs, hb and toast with coffee for $1.76 incl tax! Not for one, but both. Afternoon cocktails at the Ram's Head bar, (we called it the Rock bar) after golf. Follow that with a big steak at Billy Bob's and life is good. Haven't spent much time there in the last ten years, with Boyd, I'm sure it's still decent.

    Good Luck!

I have been going to Sam's town for years and stop by when in Vegas, but have yet to stay there. I really miss the coffee shop used to go there for some steak special they had in yester year. I agree the walk to Eastside Cannery is short and I have done it many times. One time we made the mistake of walking to Arizona Charlies in August, we did hop the bus back.
