So, my casino host called me last night to confirm my updated modified reservations. After all was said and done she said, "Wait, it looks as if you're applying for credit, but you're home so how is this possible"? I'm thinking wth!!
I've never ever tried nor will I ever open a line of casino credit. Not knocking it, but that's just something hubby and I stay away from. So, knowing this is taking place while i'm home mind you, she said she'd investigate it further, find out what's what and call me back....CAN'T WAIT to hear the outcome on this one!!

Seriously, has this ever happened to anyone else:eek::eek:

Goodness! I had a similarly crazy experience in Vegas where my card was stolen at a venue and rang up 100s of charges. It's certainly unsettling but if you have a credit monitoring service, I'd be sure to lock your credit just in case.

Also make sure that they aren't going after your bank accounts, they could have gotten hold of your bank account numbers and are opening up credit just so they can take money out of your accounts.

Usually most crooks use your cc to get your money but some also try to go after your bank accounts.

I'm not an expert on this but how on earth would someone actually be able to get away with this? Surely there must be easier and "safer" way scam people out of their money than this?

Maki, I changed our bank accounts and cards yesterday after speaking with the host. Although we have fraud protection with our cc's, i had them canceled and issued new ones just to be on the safe side.
I absolutely despise people who do these type of things to innocent people:mad:

We have 30+ credit cards. That could be a royal pain. Doubt I would do anything, at least right away. All our CC are set to send an email every time a charge over $50 hits the account. And of course, the bank would eat any fraud charges anyways.

    Maybe the host was wrong?

I don't know as I was shocked when she said it. I asked her if she was mistaken, but she assured me someone was trying to open up a line of casino credit in my name. Never having experienced something like this before, I find it mind boggling that someone would do this especially with a casino.

You really didn't need to cancel your credit cards, as casino credit lines do not use, or ask for, credit cards. The only thing needed is a bank account number...usually a checking account. Most casino lines of credit can be applied for online, from anywhere. However, to use it for the first time, or after a period of inactivity, you will have to sign for it, in person. Hopefully, your host gets back to you soon to let you know what happened.

Maybe someone has the same name? Or they fat fingered your player's card number? I don't think identity fraud with markers is super common. It is way too easy to get caught.

Very good point! My wife opened a line of credit in Vegas in advance of our May trip. She did have to show ID and sign paperwork to finalize the line of credit. In addition, she has to show ID and player's card to get a marker.

Maybe it's just a mix-up of similar names or account numbers, something simple. If someone is trying to open a line of credit in your name they have some balls. Just think, they have to provide your bank info, address, fake your signature on the credit app, and then show up in person with appropriate ID. Most credit card scammers are doing their shit incognito.

I would ask for a copy of the credit application, just to see how much of the info does relate to you. If there's a strong correlation I would file a police report, but where?

I'll add just a bit more. My wife and I have had our credit reports "frozen" for many years. If we want to apply for a car loan or credit card we have to temporarily "thaw" with each credit bureau (the big three). I was very surprised when we were both able to open a line of credit in Vegas, her at one casino and me at another, without thawing our credit freeze. It seems they basically look at your recent/average bank account balances and base your credit on that.

Please keep us up to date.

I'll definitely keep you guys updated. As far as cancelling the cards, well as I said, I just wanted to be on the safe side of things. The situation may not amount to anything, but this being new to me, I just wanted to take the proper precautions especially after witnessing what my mom went thru when someone took out a mortgage and car loan in California in her name. My mom who has always been a resident of Indiana has never traveled to California in her 80 years of life. She and my dad traveled a lot prior to his death, but i know they never went to Cali. That said, the idiots at the mortgage company still wanted her to make the payments even after they found out it was an fraudulent loan taken out in her name. Thankfully after years of haggling back and forth with the stupid company, the situation was finally resolved.

Edited to add..Ty, I didn't think of having our credit report frozen, but i will now. Thanks

Changing credit cards and bank accounts based on an offhand comment by your host is a bizarre overreaction.

definitely let us know what you hear. We've had TWO cards opened in our name in the past 6 months. We have Life Lock on top of fraud detection (Life Lock purely to cover lawyer fees if we ever need it), but it's been rampant lately.

CC are pretty easy to dispute, but since a lot of people don't want to pay gambling debt, I could see this being a LOT tougher fight had they gotten away with it.

Sin, thanks for the feedback on requiring a wet signature in person, that at least takes away a little worry.

    Keep us posted! :(

Sabre, the last time I was in Vegas was in 2009. So, although it may sound bizarre to some, I just don't want any problems prior to my trip, nor do I want anyone messing with our money and credit. That said, a piece of mind means more to me then constantly worrying about the what ifs.

Good point. If what you did makes you sleep better at night then you definitely took the appropriate action. Hope it all works out for you. :peace::beer:

I think it's the safe move.

    There's really three possibilities:

Someone filled out an application and used your player # by mistake. If they did it online, then it's possible your player account would automatically get flagged as having applied, but at some point somebody should notice that the name is different.

Or someone with the same name filled out an application and they linked it to your player account by mistake, which shouldn't really happen because there should be a date of birth and SS# on the credit application and it wouldn't match your player account.

In these cases, your bank info presumably isn't at risk.

The third one is the bad one - someone has your bank info and other personal info. If they got the credit line approved, they'd just have to fake an ID.

I'm actually surprised you haven't heard back sooner, a lot sooner. Your host should have gotten on the phone with the credit office and not gotten off until she had an answer.

It's a piece of plastic that can be replaced within a few days, I don't see a problem playing it safe. At all.

This post is a bizarre overreaction to someone doing what they thought was best based on the information they had.
