So I decided to go to Las Vegas Thursday evening and I will be on the road early Saturday giving me around 36 hours between the the decision and action of a Vegas trip.

I am curious to hear about others trips on a whim, especially those that require a multi-day road trip or plane travel.

Wasn't me, but I do remember one trip our group made.

We were eating lunch at Grand Lux and decided to call another board member who wasn't making the trip. After several passes of the phone around the table, the next thing we know, she's booking a flight, runs home to throw some clothes into her luggage, barely makes it to the airport, and lands in Vegas (no room booked to stay in) about 9 hours later.

I'm a planner, so the shortest time for my sisters and I was 3 weeks from idea to implementation.

My wife and I both have jobs that can make last minute vacations troublesome - meetings, conferences, etc. But our favorite trips are the ones we plan with shorter notice. The trip we're taking next week was only really planned a few weeks in advance. We are at dinner, talking about how much we missed Vegas after a few months away and how stressed we were and needed a vacation. In talking we suddenly realized we both had this week clear enough to book the trip. An email to the host and we were all set. SInce we have a 4+ hour flight to get there, we aren't typically willing to come for anything less than 5 nights, meaning we can't just do a weekend on a whim.

    Not like the old days....

It wasn't Vegas but when I was in college we were having a bachelor party for a friend who was a few years older. It was summer, so we were doing an all-day kind of thing. After "kegs and eggs" for breakfast we talked about how we should go to the riverboat (at the time ohio didn't have casinos, you had to go gamble on the riverboats)....I made a comment about road tripping to AC. A looooong time later (14'ish hours) we pulled up to a casino in AC for a night. It wasn't worth the trip, but it sure was a hell of a lot of fun. Of course we were all in school so nobody had enough money to really take advantage of much...I remember a lot of low limit craps and BJ. In hindsight we could flown to Vegas in less time, although I think AC was more in our budget in those days.

Minutes. Sitting around, then someone says, "Let's go to Vegas." Done that several times.

But our best was getting a KILLER deal on tickets to New Zealand and jumping on them instantly and being there in a handful of days.

Took 3 week business trip to China on a few days notice. Had to pay about $700 in rush fees to get my visa.

I enjoy having a trip on the horizon so i like to book well in advance but i don't plan like i used to. It's more fun to discover things when you get there.

Called my buddy on a whim at 4:00pm on a Sunday. He was at my place a half hour later and we boarded the plane at 7pm. No waiting around.

Live in Houston so drive to Lake Charles is a mere 2.5 hours. I've driven after work on Friday and come back Sunday morning. Would rather drive 45 minutes to airport and fly 3 hours to LV though. Something about that city, it always seems to grab me!!

In the gym one morning, pondering a vegas trip, got home, flights were cheap(winter), booked a flight and was on my way by the afternoon. The upsides to being single.

Not me, but a coworker had a rough week/ cabin fever, etc. and took off IMMEDIATELY after his Friday was over. He didn't even go back home for clothes before heading out. "I can get what I need there"..He drove 11 hours through the night straight from work, spent a few days, called in sick from a poker table and came back a whole new guy. What a hero!

    5 minutes.

Common for Southern California residents since drive time is ~ 5 hours.

Year was 2009 for me. I was perusing a sports forum and saw Southwest had a flash sale. I picked up a RT ticket from New Orleans to Vegas for $99. 5 days later I was watching the New Orleans Saints/Arizona Cardinals playoff game in the sportsbook.

Many years ago I was on night shift and my co-worker was talking Atlantic city. We got off work jumped in the car and were in Atlantic city 8 hours later. We stayed overnight and drove another 8 hours home. We both missed our next shift due to exhaustion.

2 months. My job schedule is done a few months in advance and it's a 5+ hour flight from Toronto.

I wish I had the luxury of being that flexible now - wife/kids/job/dogs all make for coordination to take place. I think my shortest lead time for Vegas was somewhere between 2-3 mos. Most of the time its 6+ mos.

With a 4+ hr flight, we prefer to stay at least five nights. It takes some major sweet talking to family members to watch the kiddo for the week.
