My wife's niece owns several small businesses and many people pay with checks. She went to the drive up yesterday to deposit checks. She was told the new rule at this branch is you can only deposit one check at the drive up. More than that and you either have to come inside or do it on your mobile device.

I guess the goal is to eliminate branch employees and they figure people won't want to take the time to go inside, so they'll use a mobile device? Well my flip phone and me aren't cooperating.:poke: I'll come inside and get my free coffee and cookie.

If my bank had coffee and cookies I'd be going in too. I do like using Kim's phone for depositing checks, beats having them sit on the counter for weeks waiting to get to the bank (actually credit union).

Whether you go inside or use the drive through lane, you would still require the services of a branch employee. So I doubt that particular rule was put in place to reduce the number of needed branch employees. It's more likely that they are trying to keep the drive through lane moving, which sounds like a pretty good idea to me.

On that note, why does it take so long for people at the drive through ATM to finish their transactions and move their cars? What are they doing up there? They always seem to be digging around for something or writing something. How about being prepared to use the machine before you pull up to it? After you complete your transaction, how about pulling your car forward 10 feet to fiddle in your purse and write stuff down? Ugh.

Bingo!! I always do that. Just common courtesy.

It's just a fact that people do not give two shits about anyone but themselves.

whyisit when I'm behind a female customer at a supermarket check out line, 90% of the time the clerk announces the total, the customer gets a "lost in space" look for a couple of seconds, then she fishes through a purse the size of my high school gym bag for a few more seconds to pull out a credit card or cash, then opens the coin section of said gym bag, dodging the moths that fly out to get some exact change? Then the both of them realize there are no magic genies around and start to bag the groceries?

By having a business owner come into the bank, they can try and pitch you on some products that you don't need.

Nailed it. The rule is so that people do not clog up the drive through lane with long transactions.

Breeze - this is also why most idiots do not use their turning signal when driving. Selfish/stupid.

The drive up tellers and ATMs are for personal banking, she should be going inside to use the business teller - how efficient/convenient would the drive up window be if two or three business customers were in line and taking 10-15 minutes each to do their transactions?

What kind of stupid bank is this? What happened to the old days where they bend over backwards to service businesses? Most local banks around here still maintain a driveup window dedicated to business customers. She should find a better bank. If they are that over deposits, I can't imagine how they would treat her when she needs a line of credit.

Boom!!! Totally agree. That's what he commercial lane is for. If there's not a commercial lane or drop box then these people should take their business inside.

    Big freakin deal.

If you have business transactions, just walk into the bank. Based on the few drive up deals I have done, it is quicker anyways.

The vast majority of businesses "drop" their deposits due to exactly what you stated: the number of checks and complexity of the transaction. I sure as hell don't want to wait in line at the bank behind a commercial customer depositing a dozen+ checks.... You also state that she has multiple small businesses, potentially further complicating the deposit. Yeah, she needs to do her banking inside.

Hmmmm... I don't often have the need to go "in" a bank anymore, but when I was in the pizza-business throughout most of the 80's and 90's, my deposits had 20-30 checks daily, as well as lots on small bills. There was a separate merchant teller in the bank's teller-line, as well as the drop-box outside that I had a key to and special locking bags. That teller wouldn't just stand there all day waiting for merchants and would certainly help other customers, but when a merchant came in, you got to cut the line so to speak and would be next for that teller. It was considered rude to tie up a drive-thru teller and associated drive thru customers with a deposit like mine, in the same manner it's rude to place a large $75 order in the drive thru at McDonald's at a busy lunch time and make everyone wait behind you. I guess the issue for me is at what point does "your" convenience, become paramount over the convenience of others.

OK, fair points about the business window. But, this isn't just their business policy. If I want to deposit two checks to my personal checking account, they expect me to come inside.

As noted, because they want to keep the drive-up lane moving.

I'm just overjoyed that they've done away with deposit slips at ATMs and drive-up machines. Saves a ton of time.

I like my bank because it's easy to get service whether it's online, ATM or in person. The only thing that's changed over the years is that I have to show my ID more because all the tellers don't know me - in the past the did. It's why I stay with them. I don't comprehend the banks that make the in person experience so complicated. I would rather do business with an internet bank than support a bank that is wasting money on a building and employees that they aren't going to use correctly.

The newer ATMs at Wells Fargo let you deposit multiple checks with no deposit slip and no keying in. It scans them right there and then and has you OK the total when it's done.

What kinda freaked me out, however, is when I paid at a shop with a check, which is actually a fairly rare happening anymore. She just scanned the check and gave it back to me. :) First time ever that happened to me. I actually do not carry the checkbook regularly anymore, but one singular check in case I need it. Credit/debit cards are sooooo convenient! :)

I can see it for the business part (yes I work at a bank). The logic fails me in the personal part. A personal deposit for a normal customer takes only moments, whether one or two checks (or even three). Yes they are keying in amount on each check, but you are talking a matter of a few add'l seconds for the subsequent items. I am thinking they felt it was just easier to do it 'across the board' - in this case not being very customer friendly.

What gets me when I go into the bank to transact some business is this: there is usually a long line with only two tellers working. The line would move more effiecently if there was not so much inane banter, that has zero to do with the transaction at hand, between the teller and customer. I place most of the blame for this with the teller. I've seen numerous upon numerous occasions where the transaction has been completed and then the teller and customer will actually chat for several minutes. A little self awareness between the teller and customer would go a long way......
