My company came and asked if I wanted to go to a conference in Vegas later this year. I thought about it and ultimately said "no thanks". While this seems unfathomable, hear me out. My reasons:
    • The lure of Vegas would make it nearly impossible for me to attend classes or exhibit hall all day while I know what's right at my finger tips. I'd be sitting in a class and all I'd be thinking is "I should be playing VP at TAG drinking beer".
    • I'd stay up way too late and feel like ass while trying to "work".
    • Vegas is my ultimate "get away from work" place. I'm not sure mixing the two is the best idea.
    Am I crazy?

You are in the right. Factor in also that your bosse will be there so now you are in Vegas with your boss of all people. I hate functions like this and view them as nothing more then work.

I made that mistake. Conference was all day and some night work so no real time to play unless you wanted to be exhausted next day.

I think I would have taken them up on it. Since the airfare was already paid for, I'd tag on a couple of extra days to get my fix. As for the work part, I've been in casinos with colleagues over the years. Some gamble, some don't. Find the some that do and hang with them.

I think you made the right call. Especially if you may have thought you would've
been under extra scrutiny that might reflect poorly on your job performance.

A man's gotta know his limitations. But if it were me, I might have gone and extended my trip by 4 days and let my freak flag fly.

My trips were business/pleasure, but I was attending or working trade shows, no conferences or heavy lifting was involved. Except one pound curls at the bar.

Different strokes for different folks. If you can't make a proper go of it for both work and your interests doing it the Vegas Lite way, then you did the right thing. For some it is all or nothing.

I thought all companies use Vegas "conferences" as an excuse to go to Vegas. You mean you actually go to these "conferences"? And work? :poke:

Just in case....that emojii means I'M KIDDING.

No way would I want to go and have work obligations. Plus I wouldn't want to hang out with the people I work with. I am old and cranky in that respect

I would have gone for sure. In fact, I've been trying to get my Company to buy a mine in Nevada so I can go more frequently :)

I have done this plenty of times, but usually on the front end of the trip. Hopefully, you can get some of the Vegas itch / debauchery out of your system before the work obligations happen. The way I look at it, you usually "feel like a$$" if you over do it anyways, just need to dial it back a little with the boss and work obligations around. I am sure that Flusher can chime in on ways to dodge your company's Norbert.

I can't skip the opportunity to go to Vegas on someone else's dime :)

But, good to know that you know where you draw the line in the sand. Funny thing would be if they think you're not a fun guy because you rejected Vegas. Little do they know you're dying to go there.

I did go, and extended the trip for 3 days. The all day conferences were tough. I did a Clark Griswold and snuck away on a bathroom break and threw a 20 in a slot for a couple pulls. :ssst: The casino calls my name when I'm there but am restricted. When I have total freedom, I choose to do other things. Funny. :kill:

Yeah, this would mess with me I think. My typical Vegas MO would have me going to conferences still drunk from the night before. Would definitely have to shift things around. :(

Good replies all. While my boss wouldn't be there to judge me, I certainly would be half-assing my effort which isn't my MO. But probably the biggest reason I said no was mixing work/fun. I go to Vegas for my release from the pressures of the job. Sitting in a conference/classes/exhibit hall all day knowing the fun that lies just outside the room would be torture.

If I did end up going, I do like the idea of extending the trip a few days.

Life is too short to put things off until another time, especially in Vegas. I should know, had a stroke in 2011 and open heart surgery 2 months ago. The first thing i said to the doctors was when will i be well enough to travel to Vegas. In 2011 it was 2 months later, this year it will be in November.
If i were you i would do Vegas in a heartbeat, even though it would primarily be work related most of the hours, any free time in Vegas warrants your presence.
There are people dying to go to Vegas but can't because of health reasons, financially they can't afford it and/or can't get the time off, whatever.
You are a lucky one, you have a good job with an opportunity to hit Vegas because of your job. Your conference is not in just any town, it's in Vegas.
If i were you, i would jump at the chance to "work" in Vegas for a few days. And if you want to relax after "work", just sit and have a drink in the Sports Book and unwind for the rest of the night.
It's VEGAS baby!! You can't let this slide to next time, the next time may be a lot further down the road due to unforeseen circumstances or may never come about.

I have been to 5 conferences in Vegas, the past 3 years. It's hard working during the day, but it is usually over by 5 or 6 and then I have free time. I also add time at the beginning or end of the trip. I would be there now at a conference but I had a family commitment and couldn't go.

I have a recurring dream where I find myself in LV, London, Rome etc. and I have little to zero money. Having to devote your best effort towards work and divert it from fun would almost be the same quandary (IMHO). Sounds like you made the right choice for you.

I think you should go and make sure you add the extra days on the end, no the upfront. Also, you will have nights and can be reasonable about sleep if you don't allow yourself to drink on conference days!
