A woman on a flight out of PHL sitting next to an Ivy League professor of Italian descent who reported him as a terroist because he looked middle eastern and was doing math equatioins on a piece of paper.
He was taken off the plane and questioned .

Unreal. Can't decide who gets the idiot of the week award though. The woman or the staff member who took him off the plane and questioned him?

I can't believe someone was actually working math equations on paper, just crazy

It's the best way to go; otherwise you forget how.

Who is the idiot in this case? The woman who followed the "see something, say something" edict or the airline/security folks causing a 2 hour delay to vet this guy and his alleged math.

Also, the islamphobia is not even that subtle here. Implying that the lady was a kook to suspect an Italian but if the guy did happen to be middle-eastern, her concerns would have been more valid.

I think it takes an idiot to be afraid of MATH no matter what the complexion of the person doing it. We are being trained to be afraid of the wrong things if we are supposed to be afraid of math.

Oh I was being sarcastic, still haven't figured out all these years how to convey that on internet forums

The non-math lady passed a note to the people in charge of the plane. I blame the people in charge of the plane for not wrapping up their investigation in 5 minutes. "He's college professor, ma'am. It's just math."

    "Oh, OK".

But no, the flight crew has to call in the authorities who have to conduct formal questioning and probably fill out forms and whatnot. Kind of like that kid that made the clock and got arrested because someone thought it looked like a bomb.
