Do you folks from the midwest and southern states sometimes ,when you may be in the company of us think that we're being hurtful the way we bust each other constantly. I've had people sit with a group of us and friends on a cruise and remark to Mrs. JG"why do you people travel together? you obviously dont like each other"
Truth is we love each other like family but we're not gonna sit around and talk about all the times we were there for each other. It's more fun to pick on each other.

No, most people do not understand the New York-Jersey-Philly style of busting chops.

Always remember this: If we didn't really like you, we would just ignore you.

You may be an asshole, but you are OUR asshole and we would defend you to the end.

I always love this Whitey Bulger/Tony Soprano machismo. lol

Out West we needle each other incessantly. And then are very happy to provide a shoulder or a lift when a bud needs one.

We get it we just do things different in Texas. I understand ribbing each other but not the in your face confrontational wtf you looking at attitude that is seen. At the first hospital I worked at one of my nursing friends was Italian and from Brooklyn. She was frequently in trouble about her attitude -- she had to adjust. It was amusing.

I'm born and raised in Texas, but my italian mother was born and raised Brooklyn for he first 34 years of her life - and I work with an italian girl from Queens who is a spitting image of Leah Remini in looks and attitude. There are only 2 of us in our department and our banter back and forth definitely raises eyebrows of those who don't know us and clients that pass by. It's all out of love tho! I'm frequently asked if I'm from up north...people are always surprised when I tell them I'm a native Texan.

My son just started dating a pretty jewish girl who's family is from NJ. It is more than evident in her personality and so far she fits in with us perfectly!

The trash talking of family and friends I get. What struck me during my last trip was when I was on the strip I kept encountering NY/NJ people who couldn't stop complaining. That drives me nuts.

Stereotypes of people from certain regions, ethnicities, etc usually get exaggerated. Yeah, there's always going to be the one-offs that we run into that we base our views on of a certain group. But that is pretty narrow-minded and sometimes unfair. A perception of "us folks from the South" is we're all uneducated rednecks. Not really fair, only some of my wife's relatives fit that description. Also, the South has no corner on the "uneducated redneck" market. Have you Been to Michigan? And what about New Jersey? Then, there are the misconceptions about Jewish people being complainers. I hate people who say that! They are the worst! While I was sending back some soup at a crappy restaurant I also told them I didn't like their attitude! Then, there were these Chinese folks at the DMV trying to pass their driving test. C'mon, they're all intelligent but driving..not so good.

New Yorkers are toughguys. Until it comes time to stop pretending and take care of business. The tough guy routine amazingly continues along with zero action. Quite possibly the weakest cliché in American culture.

Our current wannabe self imposed general foreman is from New York. I love the accurate description of "tough guy routine continues with zero action".

It's funny but you know how they say that if we didn't like you we'd ignore you. We bust your chops because we like you. Well, in Hawaii, it's the opposite. If we bust your chops, it's because WE DON'T LIKE YOU.

But like mentioned earlier, this is all stereotype generalization yet pretty accurate of people from certain demographics. Not everyone is that way but enough are to be labeled as such.

Most stereotypes have enough basis in "reality" for them to become stereotypes. Some are negative, some not. None are remotely all-embracing. We'd probably all be better off without them but such is human nature.

As a native Californian I always get a kick out of the twidiot savants who spout off about the land of "fruit and nuts."

If the thread is going devolve into stereotypes, I say that Asian women CANNOT drive.

One I've never understood is about Texas. To paraphrase: All there is in Texas are steers and queers. How did that ever get started?

Actually this phrase was quite common back in the 70s with The Texas A&M/UT rivalry. You would see this on bumper stickers of A&M fans. Not so politically correct these days. My favorite now is "Beevo --is what's for Dinner". The UT/A&M game on Thanksgiving Day is truly missed here in Texas.

Beevo is the Texas Longhorn Mascot.
