Hoover Dam Bypass

We're going to be driving from LV to Laughlin and want to go via the Hoover Dam. We won't be doing any tours, just stopping off to take some pictures.

Am I right in saying that the car park is on the Nevada side of the bridge? And is it easily accessible from US93?

Yes, it is on the Nevada side. Here are some pictures from when the road opened and they had a bridge walk before the cars were allowed on it. But, same views now after parking and taking the sidewalk to walk back on the bridge.

You are aware that you have to leave the highway a couple of miles before the bridge and then drive back the same way to the highway. You cannot proceed on the byway to the next highway entrance.

And right, the parking garage is on Nevada side, BUT if you cross the dam by car, ignore the first parking on the left side, drive up the hill a little bit there is free parking.

 

I had a look on Google Earth and thought that was the case. Thanks for confirming.

Can you walk across the bridge and take pictures from it or is there a viewing area off to the side?

 

You can walk on the bridge on either side (lake or river).

How long is the walk from the car park to the bridge? It's going to be hot on Tuesday and I'm a bit wary of climbing a lot of stairs and doing ourselves a mischief!

 

So when you turn off the highway towards the dam there is a car park on the right with a small washroom building, That is where you park to go up to the walkway on the Pat Tillman Bridge to take this photo. It's a little winding walkway that takes you up to the bridge. It's a small hike but nothing major. Parking is free.



That building on the left of the dam in between the two roadways is the paid parking garage. That is where we parked. It's a two minute walk down the stairs to the road and over to the dam itself. We paid for the parking. The other poster has a good picture of the garage.

Far over on the right up a little higher is the free parking I believe. It looks like a littl more of a walk to me but not sure how long.;

It's not a far walk but you are walking uphill - the pavement zig zags so it is not a steep walk uphill (switchbacks for those familiar with hiking lingo) but it does take a few minutes to get up there, especially if you are behind other people, and there is no shade. I have done it around this time of year, and yes it can be hot but just bring a bottle of water and you'll be fine. No matter what time of year I have gone, it is extremely windy up on that bridge, so keep that in mind.
