Never a Prince fan but since he is big news today ,they say he was a vegan. My theory based on just my personal observation and no medical or scientific training is that the few vegans that I have came in contact with all seemed to be underweight and not all that healthy looking (to me).
This morn I had a couple of slices of pork roll or taylor ham with flapjacks and am looking forward to a big burger in AC tonight. I honestly believe that if you are washed out and have very little protein in your diet and no reserves whatsoever an infection can easily be fatal.
Are there any 70 plus vegans out there who can punch holes in my theory?

There are plenty, but keep in mind that health and mortality fall under totality of circumstances. Genetics, diet, activity/ excercise regimen, drinking, smoking, environmental factors and luck of the draw all play a role.

There are plenty of unhealthy skinny people out there. Plenty.

Honestly, I think there are just too many variables: stress, recreational habits, diet, genetics.

Also, studies show that excess consumption of red meat increases the risk of heart disease, certain cancers, and other disorders

[EDIT: I was talking to a cube mate when I wrote this so I see now that this overlaps with the above poster :)]

You can get plenty of protein in your diet as a vegan - it just is plant based instead of animal based.

I think Keith Richards may disagree with you.

+1. And I am ANYTHING but a vegan.

I know smokers who've made it into their 90s. So the takeaway is that everyone should smoke.

I don't think his diet is going to play into much if he is found to have ODd on pain killers.

I read where he recently had been to a hospital for flu like symptoms. There are many cases of young and relatively young people with viral respiratory infections that lead to pneumonia, sepsis, and Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome and death. Many times these people don't listen to their bodies and continue with workaholic habits.

I severely doubt that his being a vegan will have much to do with it.

There are vegans who carefully plan their diet, getting a good supply and variety of protein, and those who just wing it and can end up undernourished. But if they were dropping like flies in their 50s because of it , I am sure the meat industry would have let us know.

It sounds like that may have been drug/OD related and "flu" was the cover up reason (if TMZ is to be believed).

No matter the cause, sad day for the music world.

...and that drug OD could be related to treatment for his epilepsy.

Humans are omnivores, eating both plants and animals, that's why we have both sharp teeth and molars. Choosing to become a vegan is a personal choice that arguably goes against our nature.

Yes, we are just like the early Homo Sapiens, banging on beasts with a club and diving right in, eating the offal first, rich and raw, because it was quick and easy and you never knew when someone or something might come along and bang you on the head or eat you.

At this point, anything said on this board or in the media is nothing more than speculation. That being said, the emergency landing/hospital visit would usually indicate something more than flu symptoms. One exception might be severe dehydration, but that would normally result in a hospital stay. In time I guess we'll find out what happened.

I had a few song favorites, but was never a huge fan of him, but of his huge talent. Michael Jackson was great, but Quincy Jones really put him over the top. Prince did it on his own. he not only wrote, produced and performed most instruments on his own songs, but he wrote and produced many other artists. In addition, his showmanship inspired many others through the years. We won't see a talent like this again for a while.

    Good Luck!
