If I am checking in late and only planning to gamble minimally on my first night, would it be to my advantage to not play with my player's club card that first day? I was thinking it would lower my daily average if I only played a little that first day.

Pretty sure checking in triggers a day so you might as well play.

If the room is booked under your TR#, the day you check in and the day you check out are both automatically gambling days. So it's better to use your card and get something. If you're that worried about it, just play more another day. If you play 2 hours on Day 1 and 6 hours day 2, you're still averaging 4 hours.

You don't need to play much at Harrahs. It's Harrahs not Bellagio. Just have fun.

Are you going on a front end comp, or are you expecting back end comps based on your play? Is your goal to trigger more future marketing offers? Days per trip are calculated into your overall ADT and trip ADT so you can't really avoid any impact.
Play how you want, nothing sucks more then dumping a chunk of your bankroll on first night. If coin in is a concern, focus on higher payback percentage games to get needed coin in / TR daily points.
