If it looks a little fuzzy it says:

    INSIDE

    Min. $15

    Max. $100

    Outside

    Min. $15

    Max. $500

Is that 15 inside the minimum sum of all inside bets or each Individual number/split?

    Silly question right?

So would everyone agree that if they walked up to this table the max outside bet would be $500?

It's the sum of all inside bets thought some places require a min demonimation of $5

Inside you have to put 15 total. This could be split between the numbers so $1 on 15 numbers would be acceptable. The max bet is the max per number so you could put $100 on as many numbers as you wanted.

Same for the outside. 15 per bet or 500 max per bet but you could play more than one 500 bet.

It's my understanding that the "$500 max Outside" would be per bet...meaning you could go $500 on Red, $500 on Odd, $500 on First Column & $500 on First Third (if you wanted to).

For "inside" bets, the application of the "minimum" is that all bets must total the minimum... so, 15 $1 bets would be acceptable... but 14 would not. 8 $2 bets would be ok, but 7 would not...etc...
Now, for the "inside" max bet, I'm not sure if the $100 is cummulative, or for each individual number.
I would think it would be a "per spot" max... meaning you could bet up to $100 on each number, but you could not, for example, bet the $100 on 17 and then also bet a split/group that included the 17, since you would already be at the $100 max for that number...

On the outside they definitely can overlap (i.e. 500 on black and 500 on even and you win both ). I'm pretty sure they can on the inside also but not certain. I think you can put 100 on a number and 100 on a split. I know I have done this before and the dealer did not say anything but I am not sure if that was by the book.

    Here's why I asked.

I was playing roulette yesterday and after losing at the first few tables I was down to my last $500 in black chips. I'm heading to the cashier debating if I should just call it a day and cash out or try one more table. As I walk by a roulette table by the cashier there is a board almost completely full of middle numbers. Now middle numbers are pretty much all I play. Along with covering the middle I usually put a stack on second twelve as well. So I walk up to the table next to the dealer in awe of the board. Not only are they middle numbers but they are almost all my heavy middle numbers.

He's getting ready to spin and I don't have time to buy in but I do have 5 black chips on me. I look over at the max bet sign and think now or never and put my 5 black chips on second twelve. The ball is spinning, spinning... and the dealer grabs my chips...... "why is he touch...?" before I can even finish my thought he tosses them back at me and says no bet, just as the ball falls into 20.

I'm shocked. What just happened? I blurted out "what are you doing? that's a bet. you can't just toss them back at me right before the ball lands!" He tells me that I bet too much. I'm only allowed to bet $250. What!? Now I have two problems. 1. It's still a live bet that you removed 2. The max bet on outside bets is clearly $500.

He tries to not pay the bet at all but I'm not having any of it. He tells me he'll call the floor over so she can tell me. She points to the 1/1 bets and says you can bet $500 on those and points to the 2/1 bets and says you can bet $250 on those. I point right to the max bet sign which clearly states max outside bet $500. She tries to call it no bet but reluctantly pays $250 of the bet ($500 total).

I'm at a complete loss, what's going on here? how am I wrong? I look around the table for support. Most of the table is silent. An older guy next to me shrugs his shoulders and tells me he has no idea why they did that. Meanwhile, the dealer has re-spun and I have no bets out there. BOOM! 20... c'mon, really? next spin 23... next spin 14. This is cruel.

I look over to the older gentleman next to me and I'm still in some sort of foggy mental tilt and say I'm not wrong, am I? How am I wrong? and point to the max bet sign. Before he even answers, the dealer says "YES, YOU ARE!" and pulls out a second sign that is pinned against the rail in the corner hidden by three cupholders.

    This one says:

    Max Payout Inside : $3500
Max Payout Outside : Table Max

Wow! You're kidding me! So the main sign says you can bet $500 on red or black, even or odd, high or low, 1st twelve, 2nd twelve or 3rd twelve but if someone wins you are only going to pay $500 total! Same if you bet a number straight up and have splits or corners etc... If you hit they are going to short you any payout over that $3500. Makes you wonder how much in overages they quietly rake in only to use this second sign if someone actually hits.

So - what that sign tells me is that they should have allowed your $500 bet on the 2nd 12 and only paid you $500 when it hit. They still robbed you of $250!

Yes this is still the worst case scenario that I could see. The max payout does not include your original bet. So even if what they're saying is true, then you still should have been paid $500 for your hit. Furthermore, a dealer should never remove a bet like that. If there is an issue, let the outcome settle, then call over the PB prior to removing chips. For instance on a craps table, they will not remove your extra odds, but will make a note that you are over. In the event that you win you are paid on the max odds. If you lose, they only collect the max odds. (I have seen them pay the overage as a place bet too, but that wouldn't really apply to roulette).

Perhaps he thought he was doing you a favor by only allowing you to put out the maximum amount he would be able to pay you on, but then again, he didn't do that so who knows.

That's the Potawatomi Casino in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I was going to say as soon as I saw the first post that they usually have a second placard somewhere around the table with additional betting rules.

See thats why I ask, because of surprises like this.

To my mind, the inside 15/100 is 15 minimum combined bets on the layout, 100 each bet position and outside 500 max would be per position ie each of the dozens, r/b, or columns

An interesting spin on this is that the way it appears is that those are the maximum payouts to a single wager. While with a table limit of $500, it would effectively bar any bet over $250 on 2:1 bets and any bet over $166.67 on 3:1 bets. To me, this is just not cool - but doesn't exactly enter the territory of wrongdoing.

To be completely fair, you could have laid out straight-up bets of approximately $21 each on all of the numbers in the second 12 for a total wager of $252 - alongside a $250 wager on the 2nd 12 outside bet.

In this situation, when 20 would hit, $250 on the outside would pay $500 - and $21 on 20 would pay $735 for a net payout of $1,235 (along with keeping your $250 and $21 original wagers). You would then walk away with $1,506 in total chips - effectively still at 2:1 payout.
