Reaction to a Sizable Win?

When you have a good win, maybe like the Royal you're chasing or a decent jackpot, how do you react?

I hadn't thought about it much until the man sitting next to me at the bar looked over when they came for my hand pay. He told me he heard me softly say 'Yes', but paid no attention.

I'd held 4 to a Royal and tossed the last card that made it a straight. When the $2000 win popped up, I just said 'Yes'. I hadn't even realized that I did this until he mentioned it.

After this, know I know that it's what I do when I get a good hit. Even Aces with a kicker merits a 'yes'.

How you react?

 

I reacted with a "Yes!" after my $800 Royal (biggest hit ever) last fall, but from other stories I've read, I get why people stay more quiet.

 

I usually smile, don't make a big deal out of it, and quietly acknowledge congratulators, so as not to make a big scene.

Then I gingerly get up, discreetly pocket the huge wad of cash, then slowly and carefully go up to my room to change my undies.

 

Haha! Classic, I am grinning! Didn't see the last part coming.

I too am in the quiet camp. I play a long time, but usually don't bet huge amounts. 50 cents to 1.50 is my average. I was always curious how I'd react as you never know till it happens. My biggest win was $700 on a machine I walked by and just plopped money in. I did double-take about 4 times, incredulous. The I very quietly printed out my ticket and went to the bill changer.

It's odd I had a ticket as this was at Laughlin, and in Vegas I hit $340 once and it was a hand pay, but the $700 in Laughlin (GN) DID print a ticket. My reaction was quiet. I did not need to go up to my room.

Though, I do get more "ooh and ahh" over smaller consecutive wins. The bigger wins I just a) don't want to attract attention to myself, and B) cheesey, I know, but feel a bit guilty about being too excited, in case others around me aren't doing so hot.

 

We always try to keep quiet if we win anything reasonable.Many years ago I won £10800 at the bingo in Scotland, no chance of keeping a low profile as they announced it from the main stage! I remember punching the air in delight, The couple who we didn't know and were sharing our table muttered " congratulations" without much sincerity and then the man added " of course, its not really that much money, is it?"
In Vegas. again a long time ago, we won the small jackpot of $600, called over one of the change attendants discreetly and presumably because we weren't whooping and hollering, he sarcastically told his supervisor, " they are VERY,VERY excited!
It is a fine line between over celebrating and appearing to maybe be rubbing other peoples noses in it and seeming ungrateful!

 

I don't really get excited about much, which is kind of depressing when ya think about it but it's just the way I have always been. My GF thinks it's weird. I love gambling with her though and I get more excited for her to win than myself because I like seeing how excited she gets. We won just over $16,000 at Bellagio a couple years ago and while it was great, I was happier watching how excited my GF was more so than the money. Seeing her happy is what makes me happy. A couple weeks ago we were at home watching TV and I was playing an online slot on my phone. I won $20,000 and had no reaction...did not tell her until the next day and she was blown away that I could win that and not be screaming with joy. She was also a little ticked that I waited till the next day to tell her....until I told her the money was being used to book a trip to Vegas!!!!...WoooHooo!!

 

Color me quiet too, especially in the high limit room. However, inside I am bubbling and leave grinning.

 

Funny this thread appears, I was at the Horseshoes/ceasers in Indiana Friday night for a bit of gambling. First hour I was there I decide to play some slots, $5 WoF is my bane so I play it. Put 300 in, play down to 100 and hit a spin for 175 :/. Cash out and move to the next machine and do almost the exact same thing. After getting my Tito for 290 I move to a machine called gambler 21. The bonus game is a blackjack game that pays better for 21 or near 21. Ive won decent on it before by getting good draws so I decide I want to try again. Start playing and very soon a 5x 5x 7 rolls on. Locks machine up, I look down and see 3000 on the screen and think wow, 3k is nice. Then realize its a 5 dollar machine, so 15k payout. I grin like an opossum but try to keep cool as to not have to many people know. Early in the day (3pmish) so handpay only took about 15 minutes from start to finish. Long story short, I try to keep quiet with that kind of money, especially a local kind of place where that is a lot of money. In vegas I might cheer a bit more though.

 

My two biggest were on older 3 reel machines. I don't pay much attention to the rules except for the top line of the paytable, so I didn't even realize what I had hit, the machines just looked like they were on the fritz, cause the internal lighting just started flickering like a busted fluorescent light. No "Handpay $XX,XXX.XX" display.

For a win under $2k, my reaction is usually "It's about fuckin' time!" I did get a thrill out of finally getting one out of this $5 machine at Caesars that I always spend hours and hours playing every trip - it was like landing a punch on Mike Tyson that he actually noticed.

I like seeing other people freak out when they win, though. A woman won $23k a few seats over from me at Caesars last trip on one of those big stand up machines and she was in a trance looking at the amount while everybody around her was screaming and jumping up and down.

 

I agree with Chuck, anything under $2000, "it's about f**king time",,,anything over $2000, it's usually, okay I'm about even. But I do mutter to myself, Thank you to whatever Slot God is looking out for me at the time. But I'm quiet. I don't like waiting for the handpay, and getting noticed. I think it depends on where you are playing as well? Like I got a $4000 couple nights back just outside the HL room, and anyone who actively plays in that area, there's no hoopla..We keep pretty quiet.

 

I was playing Timberwolf Deluxe betting 2.50 and hit a bonus. I picked the 12 free games with the 3x and 6x. On the 5th spin I retriggered another bonus with the owl, 3x, owl, 6x, owl. When the 6x came out I said Holy S&@$. It must've been loud as the people playing on another bank started to watch my win and congratulate me as that's a pretty rare thing to see. I kept pretty low key for the rest of the way. Jackpot was over $2,800.

 

I was quiet my last royal at SLS for $1000. It was quiet in there and the guy next to me seemed a little strange. Turned out he was alright. We had a royal at Harrah's in AC for $2000 and machine locks up and the music plays and the lights flash. No way to keep that quiet. The music on this machine was very loud. The tech that came over to reset the machine couldn't get it work so the music played on. Another tech came over and couldn't fix it either. They forget to get some information from my wife so the pay out was delayed. All in all, it was a good 10 minutes of loud jackpot music before she got paid.

If you can't be happy, at least on the inside, when you hit a jackpot, you should reevaluate your reasons for gambling.

 

I had a huge win last year and was sitting next to my friend. She went off like a rocket (she was on 20% of any win over 1k as that's our strategy, it was way way over that) and was hugging and kissing me and literally screaming. I was just staring at the screen and practically ignoring her, saying calm down, it may be a mistake, maybe the machine is malfunctioning or something. Talk about different reactions to the same thing. I still didn't believe it was real until quite a few hours later when the guy from WMS assured me it wasn't a malfunction and it was real. She had already spent the money in her head, lol. I was convinced I was dreaming and would wake up soon!

 

Yeah its better to keep it on the Down Low. Bad enough the Machine Broadcast the Win to everyone.
But you certainly don't want a crowd of spectators because it can bring out the crazy Wack-A-Doos.

 

Quite a few years ago, I was at my local casino and just wasn't hitting on anything. Down to my last $60 and very frustrated, I decided to pick a slot I wouldn't normally play and bet max and just get it over with (back then I only played slots and never bet more than a buck a spin, usually less). Max bet on this penny slot was $2.
I was getting a few hits here and there, and pretty soon was up to $150. Debated with myself on cashing out or keep playing, figured I'd stay with it since it was the only machine that wasn't suckling my $$ down. Just a few spins later I got a bunch of the same symbols and the machine started the music where you know you got a good hit...I looked at the bottom of the screen that shows what you won (while the credits are adding up) and thought it read $480. I looked again. Realized it actually read $4800. Well, after the 1st few seconds of utter shock, I remember jumping up out of my chair, yelling "oh my god" with the biggest grin on my face, and looking around to see who noticed; strangely enough most of the folks around me didn't pay me much attention!
That was my biggest jackpot to date, and since then, whenever I get a big hit or a handpay, I'm not as vocal about it (but I'm still jumping up and down on the inside). To me, getting a big win won't ever be ho-hum.

 

When I hit for $15k last January I was excited for sure because my brother and dad were at the casino with me. I immediately called my brother and told him to grab my dad and meet me at the machine I just hit on. It was hard to stay quiet for that one as everybody knew it was the Grand Jackpot that won.

When I hit for $4,800 in December I was a bit more mellow, although it was a Friday evening and very busy so lots of people noticed the machine that kept going until the attendant showed up to begin the paperwork process.

 

@Multi - not cheesy at all. I agree that, especially in a casino, keeping quiet in respect for those that aren't fairing well is best.

On my two "big" wins, well, big for me hence the quotes, I keep quiet on the first, a royal progressive jackpot of just over $1K and the next just over $1.5K on a blazing sevens machine, I punch the air and said "yes!". The first time I won over 10,000 coins on a machine, my wife was on the other side of the bank and I said "yes, I won 10,000!" and she came running over...10,000 what??? Um...pennies...LOL!!!

Hit for $2592 on a $3 spin on Walking Dead in October last year. Great feeling but I was on my own, until some fairly strange folks arrived to share my fun and try to share my win! I felt great though, arm hairs standing up and total disbelief.....hope to replay it this year!

 

I've noticed quite a few posters mention about some "strange" people congratulating them and hanging around and making them feel uncomfortable while waiting for the handpay.

I thought I was in the minority but it seems to be pretty common. It does make you wary when strangers go beyond the usual friendly congratulations.

I won a relatively paltry 400 bucks playing Megabucks one time. This guy yelled "Congratulations!!" and wouldn't leave me alone. Trying to make conversation like we were lifelong friends or something.

I walked over to the TITO changer and the fucker followed me! I turned around and silently stared at him with the Shaolin Stare of Death. (technique #34.5 of the Shaolin Code 2014 editionpoke

Seriously though, if you win a sizable amt. don't get paranoid but just be aware of what's happening around you, especially if you're alone.
