Breaking Up (With Your Stylist)

Is it just me, or do you ladies have this trouble too? I'd been going to my stylist for 5 years. She works in an upscale salon about 1/2 hour away but I would go to her home on her days off and get the same product and service for half the price. Great lady and I always enjoyed going. We'd have a beer or glass of wine and chat away. For the first few years, I always got a great cut and colour but I really hadn't been happy for at least a year and it was always hard to schedule the time on that one day she was available at home as she had many clients who do the same. I felt like no matter what I asked for, it looked the same. We were in a rut.

Before we went to Aruba, on the day I was to get my hair done, we had a blizzard. Now with just a few days before we were to leave, I took a chance on a local salon and stylist I'd heard great things about. Loved it!! It was a great cut that just seemed to fall perfectly when I styled it. I've been 3 times now and have a bit of guilt about whether I should call my former stylist and just say, it is easier for me to schedule appointments at the new salon.

It's true; breaking up is hard to do!

 

I don't feel guilt, but I've never had a personal relationship with a stylist. The woman I see now I've been seeing for probably 8 years (I think I started seeing her about the time I started at my current job, because it's close to my office) and we do have more of a relationship than anyone I've seen in the past. I am totally up front with her when I think I (or she!) is in a rut. So far it's worked. But when the time comes and I want to move on, I will.

(if I move on because of a move- which, to be honest, is what always happened until I moved to NC 18 yrs ago) I would tell someone I was leaving town and break up that way. Or I was just going to SuperCuts and who cares ;-)

I feel like I've seen this question on Dear Abby or Dear Prudence or similar, with hairstylists saying what they'd want a client to do - I think most say they want a client to communicate before they feel the need to ghost, but they also understand and move on when it happens....

 

Not since I ditched my comb over about 10 years ago in favor of 4" part. It's been a #3.5 electric razor since then.:evillaugh

 

It sounds like you may see her as a friend so I would probably say something in this case. And if they are generally good but something else isn't working, I don't try to burn a bridge. They may be a back up in a pinch in the future.

 

Well a few years back I think 3 I was with my gf at the time and their was a Vegas message board get together at the Cosmo..you were in a black jumpsuit..my gf mentioned she didn't like your jumpsuit but loved your hair so if this new salon is doing as good as your old one at least ya have a ace in the hole in case one closed

 

5 years is nothing as to having the same person.

 

It's funny but I was talking about this today with coworkers. I have had the same lady cut my hair for 38 yrs now. Started when I was 15 and now 53.

 

Thank your girlfriend for me. The jumpsuit must be long gone because I don't even remember it

It was like black fishnet...you were sitting with back towards casino and facing bar.. Not many showed up but it was a memorable experience meeting a handful of people from different places ...cheers

 

Oh, I think I know the outfit; it was two piece and black lace with a flesh coloured underlay. I remember that meet. We sat over on the couches at The Book and Stage. My husband hated that outfit too.

 

Yes that was it ..we came a little later..both blonde sitting to left of you ...oh well least we got it solved..lol

 

Not only women have this problem. I lingered for almost a year with my hair cutter, before I finally broke up with her. She was really a nice person, she was another Philly expatriate and we had a ball discussing reality shows and personal issues. I had been seeing her for about 6 years or maybe more. But, she started to consistently make me wait up to 30 to 45 minutes because she said she was doing some intricate women's hair thing and couldn't stop. She WAS the best and most popular stylist in the salon. But, I couldn't take the waiting any longer, so I had to screw up the courage to tell her I was moving on. She started weeping and it was a mess.

 

I go to the $7 haircutters ,they used to be the $5 haircutters,when the price went up $2, I would have gone to a $6 haircutters if I could find one. When I was a kid we had Lenny the barber,aka Lenny the butcher. For years after that I had Joe the barber. Neighborhood place,the coffee was always on you knew most of the guys and you were always welcome to stop by ,have a cup and yak. Next door was the bakery where the same cake and rolls were in the case for a week,you city guys know what the deal was there.

 

I get along great with the stylist "I'm cheating on". Last time I was there she said she'd love to go to Vegas with me. She's 25 years my younger than I but we always had great conversation and lots of laughs, so like you Breeze, I feel I owe her an explanation as it is nothing against her personally. I want to just say having the local salon with more availability for scheduling is the reason. I really don't want to hurt her feelings but if I say nothing, it will be very awkward if I run into her. Hope she takes it better than your stylist

 

My brothers used to call the barber they went to when we were kids Tony the Butcher.

 

You could fib and say you moved, to make it seem as though staying with her wasn't an option.

It's what I did when I switched banks, to avoid all the 'how can we retain your business' stuff. Just told them I was moving somewhere where they didn't have branches.

 

Would you feel this guilty breaking up with your doctor? Haha.
Damn that reminds me I'm due for a physical. Arrrggghhhhhh!

 

The last time I went to a stylist was right before my 40th birthday.

$24 for a guy's haircut at inconvenient times was too much. As I was turning 40, I had decided just to use a hair trimmer and do my own.

 

You men would definitely have sticker shock if you saw what we pay.

 

I see the sticker on my checking statement. I am continually shocked.

You women would maybe be shocked that men don't "break up" with barbers, we just don't call them again. (Although maybe you actually wouldn't be shocked.)
