On a whim, we got in the car and are driving to Vegas (and a couple other things along the way) from Iowa with a 5 and 6 year old. We are on spring break. Any suggestions on some cheap/entertaining things for the kids? Obviously gambling is not a huge priority (although we are leaving them with a sitter for one night.) Any ideas? Thanks!

The standard Adventure dome, Excalibur, pools, Shark Reef at MB and then Secret Garden at Mirage are all good bets. Even the flamingos and other birds at the Flamingo will entertain a young kid. The comedy pet threater at Planet Hollywood is also a good bet, and cheap on Groupon.

Mac King is an awesome magic show at Harrah's. You can get discount tickets at the rewards desk.

M&M store they have free movie.
Pinball hall of fame. I grew up on pinball but everyone should enjoy it. 1:30 is plenty of time playing and looking at pinball collection.

Not really cheap but you can take them to a station casino check them into kids quest then you can play while they are playing. Afterwards you can take them bowling and also take them to a movie. We do this every trip, several times.

For tourism purposes with the kids, if you happen to be passing through Arizona, please do stop by the Grand Canyon. If you are going the 15 down through Utah, do stop by the Hoover Dam. The place is great history for the kids to learn and experience.

Within the city, I recommend the MGM southern corridor with Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur, NYNY and MGM within walking distance. Excalibur has a dungeon fun zone which is an arcade for the kids to play. My kids love to play there and $40 can last a few hours. NYNY does have an arcade (last time I went) but it isn't as fun. I don't like going to the Circus Circus because it's really run down but it's like going to the county fair in there mixed with a theme park. Might have more time to kill there.

Where do you guys plan on staying? And when you say sitter, do you have one coming along or do you need services of one?

Container park. Get there a bit before dusk, let them run around the play area for a while, then when it gets dark the Preying Mantis in front starts blowing fire. On weekends (possibly weekdays, there may be a schedule) they have live music.

Yes, yes, yes on partaking of the west's many scenic wonders on your way through. But one caveat, Hoover Dam isn't exactly along the 15. It's east of Boulder City on the NV/AZ border on Highway 93 coming in from Kingman. It is of course easily accessed from Vegas, 40-45 minutes depending on traffic and your jumping off point in town.

I have such a differant opinion on this issue and do not intend to offend. Yes, in the 1990's Vegas tried going down a road of family friendly. TI, Excal, Luxor, etc. Vegas is a land of degeneacy and debauchery. People drinking, smoking and gambling. All the dark vices. When I see parents taking their kids through the middle of a casino as they witness the dark vices, I wonder why.......

Blue Man Group at Luxor. Ages 3 and up. I haven't seen the new presentation. For adults, teen, kids...they will be captivated...and so will the adults!

Since you have a car and hopefully gps:
Suitable for 5-6 year olds and older

Giant treehouse @ downtown Container Park
    Lied Discovery Children's museum
Town Square Children's park and Playground -splash pad, tree house, maze, etc
Las Vegas Spring Preserve - interactive - about $11 for kids, $19 for adults

    At the hotels:
    Mandalay Bay - Aquarium
Mirage - Dolphin habitat and Lion exhibit
NYNY - Hershey's Chocolate World ( keep an eye on their spending-it adds up)

We took our son last year (he was 7) He loved Tournament of Kings, KA. Also the High Roller and Hoover Dam, M&M & Coke Store. And as a previous post, the park at Town Square.
We are returning this July and plan on going to Mac King and Jeff Civilico, Red Rock Canyon, Mirage Secret Garden, Container Park, most mornings are spent in the pool with activities in the afternoon, after dinner he is exhausted, hubby doesn't gamble at all so I get a chance then. Also Grandma flies in from Australia to meet us in Vegas, so we have a sitter for a couple of nights. We didn't really walk on the strip at all and apart from the nights we go see shows together, my son is tucked up in bed after dinner. Vegas,, if done properly with kids is great. Have Fun

that is true. I asked what route she was taking because there are really only 2 main highways to get to Vegas from Iowa. the 15 through Utah and the 40 through Arizona which will take her further south from Vegas. I figured it would be easier to take the 70 West to the 15 south.

But then no GC, unless you're talking a big detour to the North Rim. And the 40/93 does both the South Rim and Hoover along the same route.

It's all good. But the fact remains that the relation of Hoover Dam to the 15 in your context is moot if someone already plans on being in Vegas, however they get there.
