I think the biggest issue you might has is how much you are betting per spin.

As an example: Quickhits are usually $1.50 per spin (assuming you bet max to have a chance to win the progressives).
If you have $300 and are playing at $1.50 per spin that is only 200 spins before you have gone through your bankroll one time, about 15-20 minutes worth of play.
If you want to play for 2 hours that means you have to go through your bankroll 6-8 times...

The problem is: the more times you go through your bankroll the higher your risk of ruin and the more you are betting the greater the impact a bad run of luck will have (if you go 20 spins at $1.50 and get nothing you can lose 10% of your bankroll in less than 2 minutes).

By comparison, if you were playing at 30 cents per spin it would take almost 2 hours of play just to go through your bankroll one time.

Another thing would be game volatility: you mention Willy Wonka, which is an example of a game with a very high volatility. One thing thats great about the games with high volatility is that you can potentially win hundreds of dollars on a 50 cent spin, but the downside is that if you don't hit one of those big big big wins you are just going to end up quickly grinding down your bankroll because most of the times that you do actually win something it is going to be for less, or just a wee bit more, than your actual wager.

Older games typically have lower volatility and let you grind through your bankroll at a much slower pace, the trade off is that in exchange for those more frequent moderate wins, the big super wins are much harder to come by or may not even be possible.

the higher the "jackpot" or higher end wins, the more chance of quick losses.

Machines with lower potential wins usually will let you last longer.

Look at it this way. If slot A has only one prize of $100, then you can expect to win every $110 or so play.
If slot B has only one prize of $1000, then you can expect to win every $1,100 or so.

Very, very rough numbers. And of course, there are always all those little wins along the way. In the end, for a machine to give out money, it has to take in money. And, the more it is programmed to give out means the more it has to take in to cover those payouts.

Willy Wonka, especially if it is building up a big jackpot is a rough machine to play. Fun, but rough.

Agreed, over the long haul on traditional 3 reel mechanicals, although when dealing with video slots, I would jump that to $120/100 and $1200/1000. The video slot paytables are obviously more complex, but the same high prize vs lower prize principle applies.

I don't know any off the top of my head as I rarely play slots, but there was a thread within the last week or two that was all about lower volatility slots. Try searching or maybe even just poking around in the "casino gaming" section, you shouldn't have to go too far back to find it. There were a good amount of slots listed by name in that thread from what I remember.

Why not play the lower level VP machines? Unfortunately it seems like your $20 or $40 doesn't go very far anymore. Hmmm, not sure but I thought that MSS has 5cent VP machines (or was it keno? I forget already). I usually will play 25 cent VP if anything.

You can also play the penny slot machines, just don't play max bet as some of them go over a few bucks when you play max.

The quick hits mentioned above are probably your best bet. At $1.50 max bet, you're not breaking the bank per spin but you're also giving yourself a chance at a big win.

Here is one post that might help:

    https://www.vegasmessageboard.com/forums/showthread.php?129307-Related-to-quot-Slot-Volatility-quot-what-are-some-LOW-volatility-slots

Buffalo is really popular now - has several variations, if you don't play max, but play either $1.20 or $1.80 , and hit it on the upswing, you can win two to three hundred bucks or more to keep you going. But, my experience says, if you hit a few hundred bucks, cash out and move on - when Buffalo goes cold - it freezes over in my experience.
Same for Willie Wonka - I too like this game - pretty volatile, but if you get lucky and hit, move on or take a breather.

Other older pennies I've had luck on: Wolf Run, Sun and Moon, Shadow of the Panther (I won $400 betting mid range last week), Wicked Winnings, Miss Kitty,

I play mostly three reel slots - dollars and five dollars - however it does take a bit larger bankroll to carry you through the slumps - but I've hit many a hand pay on these machines.

I have given up on these money pits: Walking Dead, Iron Man, Ellen, Wonder Woman, Jurassic Park (based on my play).

We all know the bad odds on slots, but if you enjoy them like I do, just pick some that appeal to you - have fun - and hope you hit a lucky streak!

Personally if I was going to bet ~$2.00 per spin I would rather find a 2 coin dollar machine the three reel kind like double diamond, or multi-line quarter machine that you can play $2.00 or less a spin. Or better yet, quarter VP for $1.25.

Anecdotally I can play a long time on $100 in a old style three reel 2 coin $1 machine.

But if you find those boring or that your bankroll is not lasting long enough I would just play less per spin, less than a dollar on your favorite non-progressive penny slot.

Skip the license games and the ones with progressives that require max bet. Don't feel you have to max bet - most video slots don't payout larger jackpots for max betting like the older reel slots do. Pay attention to the minimum bet. They are pushing up the minimum bets but you can still find games were you can play all lines for 25 cents or so.

I would find machines that are old school two or three reel that are a quarter or fifty cents and where there is not a big bonus for playing all three coins, but instead a win that is proportional to the play. So a machine that has its top prize for example 1600 coins if you are playing 2 coins and 800 coins if you are playing one coin. (Or if, if you really like bonuses, I would play a just one penny a line on penny machine. You can have a blast that way too but the hold may be bigger.) Whatever machine it is -- quarters, fifty cents or dollars -- you can play the one coin.

This April marks 25 years of my going to Vegas and I still remember during my first trip, where I think I had $500 for a 3 day trip, for food and bankroll, I put a dollar coin in a double diamond dollar machine around 2 in the morning and got the three eggs for $800. I felt like I had won thousands. That memory is vivid for me, 24 years and 11 months later. I played with a few hundred and wound up bringing about $300 back home. Relatively speaking, it was actually one of my most "successful" trips ever even though my bankroll is exponentially larger now.

Flowers - Same kind of memories here as well. Nice to read about the similarities!
This July will mark 16 years of going to Vegas - amazing how vivid some of those first memories remain. Stayed 2 paid nights at Mirage, spent more on food and a show than on gambling. Husband and I each allocated $100 a day for gambling, walked over to Caesars - first time ever gambling - played 25 cent slots - won $200 - fell for it hook, line, and sinker - totally mesmerizing. We were real looky loo's that trip, almost too busy casino hopping to really play much. That money lasted us 2 1/2 days; we returned home with money and hooked on Vegas!

Here we are, almost 16 years later, still love, love Vegas - and still an unabashed, unapologetic, slot player with a little VP thrown in.
Comp'd suites, limo, food, Freeplay make it that much sweeter. For years my two SIL's have patiently taught me table games, sat with and coached me at tables in various casinos in Vegas, all to no avail - it's just not my thing. We have family poker games at home a few times a year and I play to humor the kids, but in Vegas - you'll find me at the slots.

I just love all the great posts and tips on this board!

Wonder Woman Gold (NOT Wonder Woman Wild) is one you can play a long time, IF you find the right machine. They're usually grouped in clusters and one always seems to do bit better. (I tend to have longer trips and get along well with the staff due to camping my fanny for hours. Even they will admit there tends to be one better machine amongst the groups.) BUT it depends on where you play it. Some casinos have it set tighter, but even on a tighter setting, I can play a long, long time on it. That's a game you don't need to play higher figures. If you hit any of the 3 jackpots, it pays out the same, regardless of bet.

Another mentioned Quick HIts, which I LOVE (I love the old school ones that max at 1.50 bet), but as mentioned, you can burn through money quickly on 1.50 a spin, but I tend to have good luck with those.

I love Willy Wonka for the fun, but it's a definite money hog. If you want to stretch your money yet not be stuck on a really boring, old school game, my vote would be Wonder Woman Gold.
