I'm vague when I call in sick.
"I'm sick....I won't be in to work, today."
That's enough......I can do this at my job -- I know some people feel they can't.
They feel they have to explain.
    *
Here's what happened at my job, yesterday.
    *
I notice people sitting at unfamiliar desks ---- some part timers appear, too.
    Then.....
the first employee tells me...."oh ?...Judy won't be in today..she's sick....
    she has shingles."
    :rolleyes2:
    30 minutes later......next employee tells me :
    "Judy's not in today...she has shingles...poor thing !"
    :rolleyes2:
    5 mins later....next employee......
    "Judy's not in...damn ! she's got shingles..that hurts !.....a form of chicken pox."
    :rolleyes2:
****** A total of 6 EMPLOYEES - tell me "Judy has shingles".
    **
    *
I may be "old school".....but to me ?....that's WAY TOO personal info !
Sorta on a par with...."Joe Strummer won't be in this week......penile implant."
    *
    *
Just way too personal info being dispersed.
    *
BTW - As I'm writing this - I just over heard two employees discussing HER "shingles" ! :confused2:
    unbelieveable

I agree fully. I'm sick and wont be in today is sufficient for the exact stated reason!

I text when I'm sick. Calling in would give it away when he/she hears the sounds of a casino in the background.

more importantly why is Judy's supervisor telling everyone. That is confidential information, with shingles I am sure multiple missed days will happen so the supervisor needed that info, but for that person to share is the bad part.

No, you don't have to tell someone why you're out sick, but some of us don't really care. If you care, you don't say....No big deal.

On the other hand, I've worked in the health field (research, but all my bosses have been MDs) for pretty much my entire career. And my mom is a nurse. Nothing was ever a forbidden topic at our dinner table....My current boss is an infectious disease doc who spends a lot of his time working overseas. He still sees patients when he's home, but while he's away - they send him emails with photos asking questions! Fun :)

You don't know who told whom. Maybe Judy posted on facebook and is "friends" with co-workers. Maybe she called a few people to give information about assignments she's working on. We really don't know the whole picture.

Up here in southern Ontario, Canada, we got about 10 inches of snow yesterday. Needless to say, nobody's in the mood to go to work - so all of a sudden, a lot of people got "sick". I feel like not asking "what are you sick with?" just does everyone a common courtesy - because if you really are sick, you probably don't want to talk about it... and if you aren't actually sick, it's not any business of whoever is asking.

At the school district I worked at, let's say one of my custodians called in sick on a Tuesday and 3 or 4 months later he did it again on a Tuesday. The district considered that a pattern and he would have to bring in a doctors excuse. That's crap imo.

I just say I am not feeling well. If i wont be able to respond to emails while out or if it goes more than one day I will explain. Usually my boss does not want to hear the reason anyway.

Yes, and she told me it was ebola. I just didn't want anyone in the office to freak out so I told everyone it was shingles :Þ

Right now I have 555 accrued hours of sick leave. No one here worries that I'm abusing my sick leave.....

On the other hand, people do, which is why there are rules and algorithms and whatever else workplaces have set up.....

I text/e mail if I'm sick and say "I'm taking a sick day today". I agree that it is no one elses business.
