When I look for a table to play on, I look for a table with fun people and a social dealer. Unfortunately, when I'm on a table having a lot of fun, sometimes I lose more than I should because I don't want to leave.

I feel like over half the dealers don't make an effort to socialize with the players. I'm wondering if casinos take into account the persona of the dealers they hire and how they interact with players. I also wonder if more players would rather that the dealer just deal the cards and not talk, or be more friendly and have casual chit-chat with them. What type of dealer would all of you prefer?

My favorite dealers are the ones who are personable and friendly. I will leave a table if the dealer is grouchy. It's no fun to lose, but less fun to lose with a grumpy dealer. ;)

I second that. I like dealers that are friendly and talk.

At least I expect that a dealer coming to the table says a word of greeting. Whatever. Hi everybody, or good look guys or whatever. So often this is not the case.

IMO they just need to be competent, and NOT rude/grumpy. I of course prefer one who's friendly, and especially if I'm playing alone. Sometimes I have run into some dealers that are super chatty, and while I appreciate the banter, some of them can't deal and talk at the same time which results in me sitting around waiting for him/her to deal which can get annoying. Then you also occasionally run into the guys who think they're a headliner comedy act and are trying too hard to crack jokes or be funny, when they're just corny. That too can get old. However, the job of the dealer is simply to deal the cards, and facilitate the game in a polite manner. Anything above and beyond that is nice but not a prerequisite. The one deal killer is if they're being jerks or rude, or hustling you for tips, etc. Being a dealer is just like every other service/hospitality industry job. If you can't at least be polite to your customers, you need to find a new line of work.

I'm thinking that the type of people who join this board are more extroverted and want the social dealer. I've seen players at tables who don't say anything; some are even grumpy. I'm sure those are the ones who would rather that the dealer keep quiet. I also tip the social dealer a lot more even though I realize they split tips.

They are the face of the casino to the customer so they at least need to be approachable and courteous. But they also need to know when to engage with banter and when there's a customer that doesn't want that.

I just hate (and honestly don't understand) the dealers who treat the house's money as their own.
They just want to win every hand for the house.
This past weekend I met one such dealer off strip. She was so happy when the house won the hand and beat everyone on the table,
and so sad and mad when she lost and had to pay the players.
Not surprisingly, for 45 minutes I was there, with full table, she didn't get a single penny of tip.
I colored up as winner (only up a few blacks), I didn't give tip. Never to this kind of dealers.

Ok. Pause for a second. Huh? People that join an online message board about Vegas are more extroverted than the general populous? There is absolutely nothing to support this notion. If anything, the message board crowds tend to be older, more sedentary folk, and the nature of Internet message boards is that they do attract the socially inept/ challenged due to the anonymity and virtual reality aspect of the message board world. This isn't to single out VMB, rather to point out that there's no evidence to support this claim.

I think the casinos are more interested in having dealers that are competent and deal quickly to make more money for the house. I remember some tv shows that show they track dealers and how much action he/she produces based on how fast he deals, number of hands, etc. Yes a friendly dealer is nice and it helps his/her tips but the house mostly is concerned with their bottom line (making money). This is JMHO. I've seen some dealers with the "machine gun" style, ratatat with the cards and only a little conversation (some of the foreign dealers are like that, though it might be more of a language barrier thing) and machine like and I've seen others who are more sociable.

As for me, I'm not very sociable so don't really care to converse much when I'm playing (plus I'm concentrating when I'm trying to count the cards, lol - kidding). I don't talk much to the other players (unless the other player is a total babe, ha ha) and if someone strikes up a conversation I usually only answer briefly and in one word sentences. Yeah, I'm socially inept, ha ha. But then I'm more of a craps player and not as much table player lately so I don't have to be social or require the dealer to be social to me (other than giving me lots of money).

I agree wholeheartedly. However in those rare, rare occasions where the table is hot and everyone is winning I will tolerate that grouchy and grumpy dealer and take perverse pleasure in winning in front of a person like that.

I keep trying to talk to the dealer at my local casino but she doesn't answer any of my questions. She seems so friendly but it's like everything she says is rehearsed and she repeats herself a lot. I'll keep trying.......

That's an easy one. They are miserable people, and hate the fact that you are having fun, while they work. I decided a long time ago, that my time and money are FAR more valuable than spending time with some asshole at the table. (This goes for the players, as well as the dealers)

I quit playing BJ at Orleans, because I find almost all of their dealers to be robots. Plus, the players are mostly local, so they aren't having any fun.

I don't think it's a surprise that tables that are "having fun", are also making cash!

I agree, Rush. I never would play blackjack at Fitzgerald's because all their dealers all seemed to be so crabby all the time. It felt like they resented having to deal cards to me. Too many other options within a 5 minute walk to ever play there.

Years ago in the Navy we would go to Fallon, nv. There was a place called the birdfarm that was basically a run down dive bar with a craps table in it. They had .25 craps. It was just the bartenders that were the dealers . they had a rubber chicken hanging over the table and we all had a great time playing. they had a funny horn and all sorts of wacky stuff hanging by the rubber chicken.

    man i loved that place.

Actually, it wasn't my claim. I only thought this because of the people I've met on this board and from the posts I've seen; everyone seems so personable. Yet some of the people I've seen at the tables; not so much. But then again, I may have a totally different impression if I meet more of these people in person. But I'm glad to say that I have yet to meet anyone on here that isn't friendly.

Dealing the cards is how they get paid.

Being fun is how they get tipped.

That is true. However, a friendly dealer might be able to keep the player at the table longer. But I do feel bad for the dealer who gets more in tips because of their positive attitude only to have to split it with those that don't even try.

Understood that you've met some fine people from this board. My point isn't that there aren't nice people on this board, it's that you would likely find great people on the Maui or Aruba message boards as well. There's a certain bond to being among like minded people, not because they are that much nicer than anyone else, rather you share a common bond concerning Maui/Aruba/Vegas/Corvettes/Cabbage Patch Dolls/Beagles etc. This is simply a subset of the general population, with a love for gambling or more accurately, Las Vegas.
