    Hello all,

I am going to Vegas for 5 nights in April and I am currently booked at Golden Gate. I'm thinking about changing my reservation to The Plaza. The Plaza is about $100 more total after both resort fees have been taken into account from both properties. What would you chose? Is The Plaza worth the extra $20/night? The fact that The Plaza has DirectTV and very good WiFi appeals to me. I'm wondering if it is worth it to make the change? I have a feeling that the room at The Plaza would be quieter also. Any thoughts/opinions? Thanks in advance!

You didn't really specify what kind of room you have reserved at the GG. If it is the standard rooms then I would consider staying at the Plaza. The standard rooms at the GG are small and older and if you get the wrong room it will be noisier because of the noise from the FSE.

Will you have a car? Parking at the GG is all valet so you will spending a couple bucks for parking each time you go out. The Plaza offers valet service but you can also self park for free.

Now if you have a suite reserved at the GG then I would probably stay there as the suites in the back of the GG are nice and a better deal than paying $20 more to stay at the Plaza IMHO.

I also like the DirectTV at the plaza, so many channels to watch.

Guess it also depends on whether spending $20 a night is worth it. Since I'm hardly in my room (basically use it to sleep and shower) for me it isn't worth spending $20 a night more but for others it is just a drop in the bucket.

If the GG room is $20 less than the Plaza, I am sure you are booked for one of their original rooms. Although they have been renovated, they are tiny (smallest in Vegas) and very loud. Since the GG is only a few stories tall, and the rooms face the stage on Fremont or Main Street and can be very noisy. I would stay at the Plaza and walk across the street to play at the GG.

Those single rooms are passable if all you want is bed tv and shower, they're tiny but can be quiet if you get one on main st side

Stick with the Golden Gate. The room quality wont be much better at the Plaza. I stayed at the Plaza two years ago, my standards are pretty low and I still was kind of disappointed with the room. If you're find with a clean, budget room there are a lot better things to spend your $100 on in Vegas.

aaisack, have you stayed in one of those standard rooms at the golden gate recently? They are smaller than the rooms at the Plaza and the rooms at the GG IMHO are old and worn. Noise from the FSE can get irritating to some of us old fogies, ha ha.

You also didn't mention why you were disappointed in the Plaza room. Yes, they aren't the greatest, don't have fridges standard in the room and I don't like the vanity area outside of the "bathroom" (I rather have the vanity inside the bath if possible - the bathrooms at the Cal north tower are like that) but overall since the rooms have been remodeled (plus I love the directtv) I rather stay at the Plaza if the price were right. Not GN (or DTG) or strip quality but for downtown the rooms are probably the newer ones in the area.

You are correct though, I wouldn't pay an extra $20 a night - $100 for your trip extra to stay at the Plaza vs GG but then I don't really stay in my room much. Others may want to pay the extra amount for more space, newer digs and a nicer atmosphere in their room.

I like both. GG is tiny, be sure to get a room away from Fremont. I'm very partial to Gate employees, I'm become very good friends with one of the bartenders. She in turn has introduced to many of her fellow employees, plus other customers. I actually haven't stayed there in a few years, but it is my go to place to hangout. Plaza room has got to be at least double the size, but the bathroom isn't awesome (still better than the gate) . As far as the tv, as I recall they don't offer a guide to the channels (plaza), plus you can't check out over the tv, big pain in the ass if you want a copy of your bill ( think you can, but don't remember for sure if you can at gate). Ample sports book at plaza, decent bar tops at bar by pit, entertainment at bar by pit (at least on week end), has plenty of food options. Gate has DuPars, very nice, dealertainers, even nicer, Plaza has a party pit consisting of a handful of tables that is only open for a few hours.

Biggest complaints were that the TV didn't work, the room wasn't 100% clean and there wasn't a mini fridge. I'll take the MSS or the Cal rooms over the Plaza any day. I haven't stayed at GG, but if clean, a little run down and tiny is a fair description then I would take that option for $20 less a night.

Last time I stayed at the Plaza the tv wasn't working either, someone had changed the setting to play a dvd. I fixed it myself, have the same brand of tv at home, LG. Love the mini frig @ MSS & Cal. I also enjoy playing the bar tops at MSS. What I don't like at Plaza is the bar tops at the sportsbook bar, lousy pay sch.

We just stayed at the GG this week. We had a standard room facing Main Street. While the room was tiny, it was clean comfortable and fit our needs. It was noisy, mostly from people blowing their horns at the taxis blocking the right SB lane waiting to get into the GG. The FSE was audible.

GG does have a self parking lot located just south of the hotel off Main Street free for hotel guests. You need to have the hotel validate your parking ticket or you can use your room key. We did not move our car so at check out they did validate our ticket and it worked fine.

I suspect the Plaza would be much quieter but have never stayed there. GG had a good channel selection but honestly we did not stay in our room most of our waking hours. You can check out via tv also.

We will stay at GG without hesitation.

I like a good bed. The beds, and the rest of the furniture, for GG was purchased from the sell-off of the Fountain Bleu when that property went bankrupt prior to opening. So it was all new stuff and very good quality. The beds at GG are great. The small rooms are fine for a solo, a little tight for a duo. The bathrooms, while clean, are tiny, tiny, tiny.

I also rather stay at the Cal or MSS since I also like the free fridge in all rooms and I don't mind the rooms at both hotels. I stayed at the plaza a year after they renovated (didn't encounter any problems, tv was awesome with all the directtv channels including one for girls gone wild) and enjoyed my stay but with resort fees the Plaza is usually more expensive than the Cal or MSS. I had a friend staying at the GG and I visited their rooms a few years ago. The rooms seemed a little "old" and "dirty" to me and if the Plaza (MSS or Cal) cost $5 a night more I would probably stay at the other places but then I usually rent a car so I don't want to worry about the parking situation at the GG (and won't drive to the "free" lot since I usually go in and out a few times a day and night).

I usually can find better rates elsewhere (Cal, MSS, el Cortez, etc.). But if the GG was the lowest (and nothing was close - like $20 a day more) then I would consider staying at the GG.

Thank you everyone for the great input. I think I may just stay at Golden Gate since I'm already booked there. I may try The Plaza on my next trip out late Summer.

If were you i would stay at downtown grand, the rooms at golden gate are very tiny and the rooms at the plaza are nice but the staff are not very friendly, the downtown grand hotel is fairly new and the pool area is quiet and nice.

I've stayed at both within the last 12 months.
The Plaza room is head and shoulders above the standard GG room. I'm a huge fan of GG gaming, but the only way I'll stay there is if I have a suite, and I'm rarely in my room for anything other than sleeping/showering. They're just too small for me.

I stayed at both places recently myself. Plaza rooms are way bigger and better. Other people said they had rude staff there but I had nothing but great interactions with everyone there. Now if you can land a suite at the GG that is way better than a Plaza room. I was really impressed by the suites.

good luck and hope you have a nice stay at the GG. Casino is nice and IMHO I rather play there than the Plaza. For $100 less I would probably stay there also.

If two things that are going to make you happy are good wi-fi and a plentitude of tv channels then the extra money for the Plaza is worth it. They seriously are the best in these two categories for any hotel I have stayed at in Vegas... Their AC is tops as well.
