Just back from weekend at the Mandalay. It seems to me that more people are playing the misery cubes than I remember? Also a younger and more diverse mix of people. I love this trend if it is true.. perhaps people are finally getting wise to how bad 6:5 blackjack is.

Is this a known trend or just observation bias?

I think some of the initial anxiety is wearing off that used to scare people away. I've had a lot of friends who used to say "I think i'd like it, but....it just seems so confusing" come around and actually start playing.

I feel like people really love the idea of "group play" where they can be part of an uproar when the right number comes up on the dice. You don't get that in blackjack at 6:5 or 3:2.

I can't say it's a "known" trend in any sense... but I've certainly noticed it as well.

The increase in social gaming where folks from all over the world play together is very common and the craps table is simply a real world version of that. In fact it's hard to find a table where 2 folks are from the same city. Since it's a numbers game you don't even have to speak english to play it

It's then also worth mentioning that I've never seen craps in any European casino, so perhaps there's a certain exoticness to it for foreign tourists who saw it in Ocean's Eleven or Casino.

I started my gambling playing bj but once I tried out craps I never went back to bj. I will play bj but usually to pass the time, there are trips where I never play bj but I always play craps.

Notfrom, I visited Europe and South Korea and I also noticed that there were no crap tables in those places. I saw bj tables in Nice and Monte Carlo (along with baccarat tables). I went into the casinos but really didn't have the urge to gamble on those trips. Now if there were crap tables I think I would have tried them out but since there weren't any I passed on the gambling.

You made the right call, I think. BJ is played differently in that part of the world anyway with the ENHC rule, and loads of superstitious players (who will fight over "opening on the wrong box" and insist you place side bets even if that's not your thing).

From what I hear, Monte Carlo has become quite a tourist destination and no longer the true High Roller joint it once was. Did you get the same impression from the place?

I think this has to be directly related to the fact that casinos have free craps lessons these days.

They have had those lessons for years.

I think it might have more to do with "bubble craps". People who would never think about playing at a table, can cut their teeth on this version first.

Bubble craps definitely has had an effect for sure. People can freely go to bubble craps unit and wager or even possibly even read rules screens to practice the game without feeling guilty to ask others questions.

Not sure. I was there during the day, they allowed us to visit without much of a dress code but at night some of the casinos require you to be dressed (coat and tie) to enter the casino. Since I didn't have a jacket I skipped visiting at night. I guess there were a lot of us tourists visiting but then we weren't gambling as much, many just played the slots.

Yeah, I wondered if it was like the James Bond types where you have to be dressed to play but I really didn't notice the denominations they were playing on the tables and during the daytime the dress seemed more casual. I still wore a long sleeved shirt when I visited.

There are a ton of tourists around Monaco/Monte Carlo, but it is still much less crowded and much more refined than Vegas. Also much smaller. Prices of food and beverage in Monaco are absolutely obscene, much higher than anywhere else I have seen including London, Paris, and NYC.

There are lowish limit blackjack games (like €25) but as mentioned the standard of play is laughably bad, most players believe in some voodoo strategy or other. On the plus side, you can pretend not to understand whatever language they are berating you in!

Last trip I had a friend of mine who was intimidated by Craps...bla bla bla to complicated...we sat down one morning at a Bubble Machine at the Grand playing for $1 pass w/ $2odds and a couple of place bets and a couple of come bets w/odds and I had him up and running in no time. We went to a regular $5 table and had a blast. Bubble machines are great for learning !!!!

Good points about the bubble craps, I hadn't considered that aspect. Also I was thinking that people can play blackjack in a lot more places, but not necessarily dice. For some reason Craps (except sometimes bubble craps) is not so common (or legal) outside of Vegas.

Im not entirely sure, but I think there are less craps tables open now then there were a few years ago so they seem more crowded.

Also the cheering I think draws in people who like excitement. When a shooter hits a few in a row, the tables go nuts. The pit boss usually says nothing. If that happens at a black jack table all kinds of managers start hovering over.

I worked in NJ years ago and if I remember right there were a lot more Craps tables in AC then in Vegas per casino. Dice was just more popular there. Good times !!!

Cubes of misery haha so true

But damn I love the game. I think the community aspect is something that appeals to people. When sitting at a table it is easy to go on autopilot unless you have a really talkative group and a fun dealer.

I'm a very vocal craps player. I yell and holler for both good and bad. I'll run down and high five a good shooter at the end of the table. Makes it more fun.

Puerto Rico was like that in the past. Coats and ties at the Craps table or shown the door. I played then but lost my azz due to not understanding the Field bets odds.

When i first visited Vegas ( feb 2015 ) i was looking at the table and i was thinking how am i ever going to understand this game ?

In europe we dont play craps ( i dont know why ) but i kept watching and watching .

when i was in Newyork Newyork a dealer at a empty craps table took the effort to teach me the game ( took about a hour )

Since then i love the game and the atmosphere while playing it !!!

Craps lessons go back at least 20 years. It seems as more and more casinos popped up around the country more people play craps in Vegas. They can get their feet wet at the local casino.. Let's face it, craps can be somewhat intimidating at first. The more exposure gamblers have to the game the more chances they have to learn. In the past they wouldn't take the time on a 3-4 day Vegas trip. Now you can play it all over the country. When I teach someone craps for the first time I first go over it at home with my big felt layout. Then we go to the local casino and play. And when they play for the first time in Vegas they already know what they're doing.
