So as I am a month away from going to Vegas, I am reminded of the first time I hit a 'real casino' when I was just 22 years old. This isn't a Vegas story as this happened in Reno, but I thought I would share anyway.

So I was 22 years old and basically broke. We were going to Reno to bowl in 'nationals' at the bowling stadium there. We had pre-booked a flight/hotel package at the Circus-Circus as it was the cheapest place within a decent distance of the stadium and they had specials for the bowlers coming out there. We got up at 5AM Central time and headed for Omaha (we lived in Des Moines Iowa at the time but were flying SW out of Omaha). We had a 1.5 hour layover in Phoenix that turned into 3.5 due to delayed flights. Then, we had to touch down in Vegas on the way to Reno (again, anything to save some money as I was broke). I should also mention my father was with me on this trip as we bowled together on our league/team.

When we finally got to Reno, rented the car, had some dinner, and got checked into the CC, it was around 9PM Reno time (11PM body clock). However, I was READY to hit the casino. Now, we were going to be out there for a week and I had all of $1000 with me (big money at the time). No credit cards or a full bank account to fall back on and my father had already vowed to not 'bail me out' though I am sure he would have if needed. That $1000 had to cover food, entertainment, brackets (a bowling side bet), and gambling for a WEEK.

So, he told me to leave the majority of my money in the room hidden and go down with only what I could afford to lose that night. So, I took a whopping $50 with me and headed to the BJ tables. I sat down at the first $5 table I found open and laid my $50 on the table. I really had no idea what I was doing (much smarter player now) but somehow turned that $50 into $400. After losing a couple of hands in a row (to get me back to $400) I decided to walk away and was obviously STOKED.

I went back upstairs to our room and the old man was watching TV. I had been gone just about an hour and he was surprised I lasted that long on $50. When I showed him my winnings, he was impressed and (correctly) called it beginners luck. I was so ready to go back. So, I put most of it away and took another $50 with me and headed back down to the casino. By this time, it was about 10:30PM Reno time and 12:30AM 'home' time and I was tired but living on adrenaline. I walked through the large mezzanine and found another table at the Silver Legacy which is connected to the CC and also the Eldorado.

I slapped my $50 down on the table again and had an almost identical run to the first one. I turned that also into $400. Once I hit the $400 mark, I walked away from the table. At this point, I was floating through the casino and also thinking this gambling thing is a piece of cake (I have been humbled countless times since then). As I was walking back towards CC and our room, I walked through a high limit slot area. I figured I was playing on their money, so why not give it a shot. I put $100 into a machine that only took two credits per spin. It was a machine that had only 7's on it but every seven was a different color (or colors). As this was almost 20 years ago, it was a 3 reel machine and it spit out real coins when you won. I pulled about 4 times with no luck so was down a quick $40. I thought, I'll try it one more time and if I don't hit, I'll pull out $50 and still be in good shape. The next spin, I lined up 3 different 7's that paid out $150. I was now up to $190 in the machine. I was loving life. I decided to play it down to $150 and pull out ahead but before I could do that, I hit that same 'spin' 5 more times. Between non winning spins, I was up to $800 in the machine. HOLY S***!!!

At this point, it's midnight Reno time, 2AM body clock time and I have been up for (and traveling for most of) 21 hours. I am spent and ready to crash. I push the 'cash out button' and the machine starts to spit out coins. It runs out and the attendant has to come refill it. It was also my first taste of comps as I was handed a pass for a free meal and he also encouraged me to enter a drawing for a car they were giving away in the future, etc. I take my bucket of $5 coins to the cashier and turn them into bills. Now, in total I am up $1500 for the night. I have now taken my $1000 for the week and turned it into $2500. This time, when I made it back to the room, the old man was sleeping. I let the door slam a little louder than I could have and made sure to be a little more 'noisy' while getting settled in. When he finally rolled over in his bed and asked me where I've been, I told him I had a good night. I fanned out $1100 in new winnings in $100s, $50s, and $20s and told him that all of that happened in my second trip down. He immediately started to get up and get dressed as he wanted to go downstairs to gamble. I told him I was done and was quitting while I was ahead (way ahead) and went to bed. Maybe I should have gone back down but it probably would have flipped a great night back to an average night.

For the rest of the week, I lived it up. I gambled when I wanted, went to a show or two, ate like a king, etc etc. When I gambled for the rest of the week, I stayed pretty even while the old man lost his ass. He had to hit the ATM multiple times which didn't make mom very happy when she got the report at the end of the week. But, it was a great week and the hottest 'bender' I have ever been on.

So, I'd love to hear about a winning streak you've had. I don't mean one lucky pull on a slot machine but a streak of winning that extended into multiple tables/machine over hours or days.

It seems like the casinos always let you win the first time right? I had a similar story when I went to a casino for the first time with my dad and I couldn't lose playing blackjack while my dad was basically handing his money to the craps dealers. At the end of the night I had a loose 5 dollar chip in my pocket and as we were leaving I found the roulette wheel and asked my dad how to play. He told me it was a terrible game, you almost never win but basically you bet on either color or number. I put my 5 dollar chip on red and won. I then decided since I was up 3-400 dollars at that the 10 dollars didn't mean much to me so I threw it all on 13 and I don't think I need to tell you what number came up. I had no idea that it payed 35-1 and was beyond excited when I got a few more black chips to add to my collection. Of course 21 year old me thought that gambling was the easiest thing in the world and wondered how anyone could lose. I almost wish that I lost that night because I've had the bug ever since and those kind of nights are far and few between!

Mine has to be the time I received a flight and hotel offer to Harrah's in New Orleans (I'm in Houston). My play usually gets me free rooms in Vegas for 2-3 nights, and flights to places I can't convince the wife to go with me to. New Orleans though? Why not? Well, I usually budget for a little for my gambling bank roll, and since this offer was something we just decided to take, I decided to play smaller and more conservatively than I usually do. I ended up bringing 50% of my normal bank roll, and even decided to still just go and enjoy the food, low-key gambling, etc.

I'm a craps player, so I cash in a little, and just play. Walk away a winner, up a few hundred. Another session after eating, resting, whatever, win again, another few hundred. Over the course of the weekend, still maintaining conservative bets and strategies, I just couldn't lose, and went home almost doubling my bankroll.

You know how WE do it, first thought was, MAN, why didn't I play like I usually do?? haha

Haven't received another offer to return there. I suppose since my theo was probably lower than expected. Wish all my trips were like that...Actually that was the first positive trip I've had for many, many trips.

I went to Vegas for a couple nights with someone to see Celine Dion during her first year at Caesars. We stayed at the Mirage and got upgraded to a nicer suite than we had already booked. The afternoon we got there, I decided to go downstairs to play some BJ. I sat at a $25 table with two couples already there. The person I sat next to had several drinks too many, so it took a long time for him to decide on taking or holding. Within the first few hands of losing, I proceeded to win 16 hands in a row. I upped my wager by one unit after each win, and after all the double-downs, splits, and naturals, I was up a few thousand. My last hand happened to be a surrender hand so I only lost half of my wager for that hand (I would have busted if I had played). The next day I was at a different BJ table and won another $1k, so I came out ahead over $6k that trip. The Celine show was good although I'm not much of a fan of hers. I'm still trying to break my record of winning 16 hands in a row. The closest I have come is 11 wins in a row.

I've often wondered that. It's like they see us coming as young kids and think "a small investment now will have them hooked for life." I've never had a run like that again (though I have had some great nights).

It's fun when you can get on a bender like that!

About 2 months ago I was at Mardi Gras Casino in Charleston WVA for a Friends Birthday.I had a $300 bank roll for 1 Afternoon/night. I hit a VP machine for $100 right off the Bat then went to the Craps Table were I Bought in for $100 and cashed out for $900. The night was still young so I went back to the same VP Machine and hit for another $100. A friend wanted to try another Craps Table that had just opened and I dropped $100 on that one. He went back to the Craps Table we started at but I wasn't feeling it so I walked around for a few minutes. I passed the same VP Machine I had already hit on ($200 total) and dropped $40 in it, I got it up to $120 and decided to play it to $80 and cash in, I got all the way the way down to $85 and on my next draw I drew everything but a King of spades to a Royal I held what I needed to hit the Button and was floored when the King of spades popped up (my 1st royal) for $4000 :drunk: (the really F upped thing was I was on a .25 Machine playing Max which was 20 credits (or $5 a draw) on that machine, (I have yet to see one that has a max like that see the Pic Below) My drunk ass didn't even realize I was playing $5 draw until I had drawn a few times but for some reason I kept the pedal down and let it eat. I walked back over to the Craps Table were my friends were and they were beside themselves when I showed em the Cash, I still had the $80 voucher left from the VP Machine that I had not played yet, I put that in a Wheel of Fortune Machine and hit for $300. I took the $300 over to the High Roller Room and hit a VP Machine for $600, dropped another $100 in a trip 7's Machine and hit that for another $600, it was getting late and I was feeling great so I bought into a $25 BJ Table, I ended up cashing out there for around $900.All in all I won around $7500 in a span of about 6 hours with the Bulk of it hitting in about a 2 hour period. That my best story but I have to tell you guys that I just got back from Super Bowl Weekend in Downtown Vegas and got my ass kicked, I didn't hit one Damn thing the whole 3 days I was there that's worth talking about. Glad I put most of that WVA Money in my Daughters 529 Collage fund !!!!

I've had nice winning sessions at one game, but never a streak over multiple games/sessions like that. I'm jealous! My first BJ session in Vegas was a pretty good streak of wins, didn't even think of pressing at the time so only won $300 bucks or so, but I was hooked.

    Great stories!

I paid for a good chunk of my tuition at UNLV counting cards eons ago. I never had a losing session at Sunset Station (over 30 sessions). Of course there were other places I almost never won (I'm looking at you Circus Circus, Slots-a-Fun and Caesar's Palace). Funny how those things go.

On my second time playing BJ, on a $15 black jack table in borgata two years ago, I turned $300 buy-in to $3300. Haven't won again on a BJ table since then.

The hottest run I ever had was about a year and a half ago. I was literally down to my last $50 of a 2k budget. I stuck it in a $5 level video poker machine. I Hit a 4OAK for $1195. I proceeded to hit 3 royals that trip (two progressives) on quarters. I also won $500 in Freeplay on a promotion.I ended up quitting on the gambling at $5700 ahead.

My third visit was incredible for me as I am a low roller. I hate it now because I am always chasing those three days.

I didn't play slots but was with a lady that loved them. I hit $625 on the first monopoly slot, then $800 $700 and another $700 on the HOT HOT penny. Then in High limit slots hit $1500 twice. These were all hit with less than $40 in. I then tried a couple new card games(new to me) I hit quads in Let it ride playing the three card bonus(I had 3 9s) and then had my best streak at Black Jack.

I came home up over $14,000 but have given that back and much more over the years. That was an incredible three days, maybe I can duplicate it during March Madness.

When I lived in Vegas I had a steak of about 6 months that I won every time I walked into a casino. That was every Friday and Saturday night. I remember thinking to myself during the streak that it was impossible to string that many positive sessions in a row. I played pretty conservative BJ, Pai Gow and Craps.

My best BJ streak was when I won 17 hands (not counting ties) at the high limit room at the Hard Rock in LV when I sat down. I quit after the 17th win cashed out and left the casino.

Of course I do have a bit of regret to see how it would have gone had I kept playing....

Yes, I have given back all those winnings back to the casino (sigh).

OK...two stories (and for those who have already read these in older posts, please forgive the "repeat"):

    1. In the early 90s, me and 4 friends were all playing/staying at the Stardust... we took over a $5 blackjack table & everyone won (some more than others :evillaugh )
For the rest of that trip, every table game and every machine I played, I won at ...it was uncanny... after the first couple of hours, I actually knew I was in the mythic, proverbial "zone"...I couldn't lose... I would just get "feelings" about a table, or a slot machine, I'd play & win...sometimes only a little, but still - it was crazy...even my buddies were wondering WTH was going on.
At one point, one of my frinds was taking a bit of a beating, so I called his attention to a particular slot at the Stardust, as we were walking out to hit the Westward Ho... he said, "Naw...I'm not throwing away any money on a slot machine!". I reminded hm of my "zone", but he still said no...so, I fed $20 into the machine... third pull, hit $100 & cashed out. I then told my friend, "See? I tried to help you out!" One of my better trips ever.

    2. Many years later, after taking a beating, having lost my entire $2000 bankroll, I hit the damned "credit card cash" machine at the Mirage...you know the ones - where they charge you $50 to get $1000 on your credit card. Well, that's what I did (first and only time I ever did that!).
This was the morning of my return flight home. I went to an empty 3-card poker table, bought-in & told the dealer that needed to win $2000 in 2 hours before I had to leave for the airport. He said he'd help me out. A lot of back & forth, but I was steadily gaining... at the point where I was up about $1000, the dealer told me he wasn't giving me any cards until I went to the cage to cash 5 of the blacks, plus my initial $200 buy-in. So I did... this happened 5 more times! By the time I had finished, he had me betting greens instead of reds...
On the last cash-out point, he told me I was done and asked for all of my chips. He colored me up for about $1000 & told me to go straight to the airport...which I did (after tipping him an extra $50 on top of the many tips he earned along the way!).
So - I went from being in for $3000 to being up almost $2K.
I know that winning $2000 on a trip isn't that spectacular, & I've certainly had a trip or two when I won more than that, but that was the best single-session hot-streak I've ever had...and, by far, the most successful "turn-around" ever!

Got hot yesterday after going down big I figured I would lose the rest and played Dueces Wild VP with the times play feature that depends on your previous hand. Got pretty close to going home broke and hit two Royal Flushed with Wilds within 5 hands both with 7x payouts for $175 each. Figuring my luck had changed I stopped at a slot machine and hit a bonus round for over $200. The last 1/2 hour I was there I won over $500.

    ended the day up $27
