One of my "frugal" friends is headed out in a couple weeks and staying at super 8.. He says he wants to avoid paying for a taxi and walk there from the airport. I said to just suck it up and pay for a taxi since it won't cost that much but he is convinced that $$ is better spent at the buffet. What are the chances he gets hit by a car? What can I do to convince him such?

I told him j thought it was kind of a dump and he was better off at one of the lower end cet or MGM properties but he's pretty set in his ways and blinded by the low price tag

If he's that poor or cheap he has no business going to Vegas.

I don't think he'll get killed. What time of the day does he land/take off? Unless it's in the middle of the night, the walk shouldn't be too dangerous, just long. I hope he's talking about the one on Koval next to Ellis Island. There are a couple more that are not within walking distance.

I can't imagine hauling luggage down the street. To me, you are asking to get mugged but he'll probably be just fine.

You may want to reconsider him as a friend. :evillaugh

I'll tell him to look into the shuttle (but he might not want to tip!) don't know when his flight is exactly but I assume it will be before dark so I'm no so concerned with him getting robbed (should I be?) as getting hit by a car

Frugal is an understatement if he wont throw the shuttle driver a buck or two. And at the same time willing to possibly get mugged. I'll choose to tip a dollar over that experience.

Just curious what the price tag is on the super 8. Cant be that much different then the excaliber!

To be honest I don't even know..maybe a resort fee thing? I was actually hoping I was going to get a whole bunch of people saying he's crazy so I could show him the thread. He said I was just being a snob

Well if he cant give a driver a buck for a ride i don't think a bunch of people saying he is cray will register. Let him walk. Sometimes you have to learn the hard way.

There is a fine line where "frugal" becomes "cheap," and it sounds like your friend left that line in the dust long ago.

Without wanting to sound too harsh, he sounds a tight, miserable sod, I don't think I'd want to be in his company when the drinks are due lol.

Why he would risk his health/safety via mugging/hit by car or any other mishaps for the sake of a couple of dollars is ludicrous.

The Super 8 has a free shuttle bus to the hotel from the airport. I wouldn't walk it, but I don't walk from LVB to there either. Not because I think I'll be killed. I'm just lazy. ;)

I wonder if your friend knows that there's now a $9.99 resort fee for that hotel.

I would be more concerned with getting hit, especially if at night. Not even sure where there are any sidewalks leaving the airport.

Looking at a map, it looks like quite a hike - and we walk 5+ miles a day, but through hotels and casinos.

I would not want to spend any time in Vegas with this guy.

Oh, I forgot to add that walking from the airport is possible. There are some areas on and near the airport that aren't exactly pedestrian friendly, but once you're out to Paradise & Tropicana, it's walkable. But again, I wouldn't do it. ;)

I am pretty sure there will be sidewalks most/all of the way from the airport, so getting hit by cars is unlikely. I would be more concerned about mugging (although still only moderately concerned).

But while I am all for frugality, this whole plan seems pretty crazy.

Ellis Island DOES have a resort fee. It also has a shuttle. Who opts for that place for frugal reasons without knowing that? I'd also hazard a guess that a super 8 shuttle driver is used to getting stiffed on tips.

The walk is likely to be in the 45 minutes to an hour range through not-so-great areas.

But beyond that, staying at EI really won't save all that much money most of the time. Money that could be better spent at the buffet? Which buffet? Did he pick EI because he wants to be near the strip? Because aside from one touristy walk, he is going to HATE the strip if he begrudges a shuttle tip. He could probably do far better overall staying cheap downtown where there are more cheap eating and fun options, getting a bus pass (no tip!) and taking the WAX from the airport and the SDX when he wants to see the strip. Anything extra the room might cost he'd make up in cheaper food/gambling, unless his EI plan is to do all his eating and gambling there only. It has a cheap cafe, and cheap tables, but is it really going to be his whole vacation?

Anyway, I'd stop doing the work for him, but suggest if that is his plan, he do some playing with google street view to lend some perspective.

I'll pass the info about the resort fee on to him maybe that will change his mind. I agree with the posts about how crappy of a vacation it would be (if this was my vacation id use the money on a bus pass out to that big bridge by the dam and take a free trip off) but to each his own...

Well, I know this is supposed to be the "friendliest" forum on the internet, however, I cannot resist being a little harsh.

First of all, there is a difference between being frugal, and being a reasonable human being. As another poster stated earlier, this person should not be going to vegas, and if you are a good friend (and not the actual cheapskate yourself), you will tell him this. The majority of employees in vegas make their money from gratuities. To not tip these hard working people is an insult.

Now, as far as the "walk" is concerned. Depending on when he lands, and the time of year getting mugged may be least of his worries. If he is arriving from May through August during the day he is in for a real treat, yes, it's a "dry heat", and he will quickly find out the cost of being frugal. If he arrives at night, while he probably won't get mugged, he will get to experience some of the things in life that our parents always warned us about, and I would advise him not to talk to strangers.
