    Yep it is a choice

    "Whiz wit"
    "Whiz wit out"

Or you can sub in provolone or American for the whiz.

The "wit and wit out" means with or without onions.

I like mine "provolone wit" but will eat a whiz every once in awhile.

I always try places that try to replicate them and I've found a couple that get close. What really makes it is the bread.

I used to live in NYC and in Princeton NJ. I've lived in a lot of other places since and I swear I can not find a pizza that is as good as those in the tri-state area. As far as cheesesteaks, same deal.

I'm biased but you're correct. The pizza and steaks (and hoagies) there are top notch. I always marvel at the chain pizza joints and sandwich shops that open up there and how they can stay in biz with so many great local options. Plus the local places are much cheaper. We can get three large pies from a place down the road from my moms for $30 and they're huge.

Everyone from an area with specialty food is entitled to this. I'm from Buffalo, and will NOT eat "Buffalo" wings anywhere else. So I respect Philadelphia natives who won't eat "Philly" cheesesteaks in other towns, and same for New Yorkers who roll their eyes at "New York" pizza, or Second City locals who want no part of "Deep Dish", etc.

I miss Hoboken at bar time. I could get a slice or two that were gargantuan for $1.50 each.

Being a lifelong New Yorker, I have to agree with you on that. I did try pizza in Vegas last July at a place called Bonnano's (right next to the Walgreens and McDonalds on the corner of Planet Hollywood on the Strip) and it was really good - it was the closest thing I've found outside of NYC to an authentic slice of New York pizza (greasy slice and all).

Haven't been to Jim's in awhile, but had a D'Alessandros cheesesteak recently and it was pretty awesome. Not a fan of wiz. I would have to vote for the steak at John's Roast Pork. I would also skip the cheesesteak and go for the Roast Pork Italian with provalone and broccoli rabe sautéed in olive oil and garlic. It's better than a cheesesteak.

These are pretty easy to make at home. If you can get a beef knuckle which may also be called a sirloin tip roast, have a butcher slice it paper thin. Figure on a half pound per serving. Cook it in a cast iron pan in a little oil and chop it with a metal spatula until there's no more red. Put a couple slices of cheese on the meat and cover with a lid briefly so the cheese melts, but don't burn the meat. Now the tough part for many is getting a good Italian roll with a crust on the outside and a soft pillow inside. Fry up some sliced onions, white mushrooms, long hot peppers if you'd like.

I make my own pizza as well, but that's another story.

Philadelphia was just named by Lonely Planet as the top place to visit this year, it has a great restaurant scene.

I'm not sure I've ever had a proper cheesesteak, at least, not in the last 30 years.

Every time I order one in Vegas, they use that horrible processed roast beef shit, super salty, horrible. Experienced this cheesesteak fail at 777, Magnolia's and other places. Where can I get a real cheesesteak in Vegas?

LOL!! I grew up 2 blocks from D'Alessandro's and for several years lived in the apartments just across the street!

Hands down THE best cheesesteak in Philly. It's the first place I hit every time I'm in town. During peak hours, you can't get in the door. Great girl watching from the end stools at the counter.

Wow, can't believe another VMBer knows where I'm coming from. Further agree about the Italian Pork sandwich.

Of the original choices, Mike, I prefer Geno's , but Pat's IS the original, so there's that. They are across the street from one another, so you can try both and compare. The main difference is that Geno's has thinly sliced meat left whole, while Pat's chops theirs up.

Interesting side note is that just across the street is a softball field where Joey Merlino, Philly mob kingpin, was the captain of Geno's softball team. True story.

Celebrities may show up and any time of the day or night and both places have their walls lined with celeb's pictures who have dined there. Both are outdoor, walkup venues, so that needs to be considered. Don't be intimidated by ordering properly. They might chide you for it, but's all in fun. Make sure you speak English at Geno's. (Inside joke for other Philadelphians). The area is funky South Philly at it's best, or worst, depending on your point of view.

Or, you can walk 2 blocks north to the Italian Market area and get an Italian Pork sandwich. The Italian Market area is well worth seeing from a tourist standpoint.

Walk about 10 blocks further north to Center City and you are at the Reading Terminal Market, which also has numerous eateries inside.

I tried Jim's many years ago and really can't see what all of the fuss is about.

I would say try Pat's and Geno's because of the funkiness and touristy thing, then Google D'Alessandro's for the best cheesesteak in Philly. It's at Henry Ave. and Magdalena St. in Roxborough, so follow your GPS closely. Remember when you are there that this area right here is where The Breeze lived his first 43 years.

You know I've always wanted to tour Philly, but never got around to it. Only places I,ve been are Franklin Field, and the ball park they tore down a few years ago(forget the name) and the airport.
