We might be changing to the Cosmo for a 3 night stay instead of the Mirage. I'm paying cash for the resort fees and taxes and planned on using a low limit credit card ($300 only) for the incidentals since Mirage is only $50-$100 per night hold. We have closed all but a few credit cards (fixing our debt) and this is now our only major one with a zero balance.

Anyway, I read that the hold at the Cosmo is $150 per night, which our card won't hold. Has anyone had any luck with the front desk being able to adjust that upon check in or is it strict un-bending policy? I'd like to stay there and not let this be the reason why we can't. I just need them to auth $300 instead of $450.

We have a resort credit to use so we have to be able to charge back to the room so they can apply that. It's only $100 so it wouldn't go over the amount held.

    Thanks in advance.

They are pretty strict about it. In addition, if you charge anything to your room, they raise the authorization by that amount.

How do you even know this, haha! If not for reading the threads on here I don't think I would have even noticed they put a hold on my card, let alone the amount. I'm not surprised, I mean it makes sense, just never didn't occur to me. I just check cc statement when it comes to make sure there are no surprises :)

In regards to OPs question, I would call ahead so you don't have any nasty surprises when you arrive. Perhaps you can supplement the deposit with cash? Good luck to you :)

You could tell them you do not have a credit card.

Meanwhile, some side advice. If you are trying to improve your credit, getting rid of you cards will actually hurt vs help. Unless of course you are unable to leave them in the drawer and avoid using them irresponsibly. (I know that is an issue for some people)

EDIT - I just read your post again. Do you still have some other cards, but with a balance? If you do and they have credit lines available, you can use those for the deposit since there is no REAL charge. Then pay with the other card or cash when you check out.

Total honesty here, yes we have been irresponsible with credit and the rest of our cards - that could be used for a hotel stay - have less than $450 available on them. This is the only one right now free and clear..

I have to put a card down to utilize the resort credit and prefer not to have to give cash (that's our bankroll etc..) for a deposit that I will not use.

I called and they said it depends upon the discretion of the MOD at the time at the front desk.

We might just end up staying at Mirage where I know it won't be an issue.

I don't know how pleepleus does it but i think most people in this day and age would have access to their bank accounts through an app on their smartphone. Super easy to check your balance on different accounts and transfer money between them. If you see your balance is lower then your credit limit just click on it and it will tell you what the hold is. No need to wait for cc statement since you can access it 24/7 and pay through a simple click online.

If you can't afford to have the credit line on a card to even cover the incidental charges prob shouldn't be going to Vegas and staying at the higher end resorts. Not trying to come off as a dick or anything. Even though no real nice way to put it. Hope you win enough to pay off other cc's!

That's true, I used to check mine more when things were tighter, and I certainly would if we had fraud issues. As it is now, I rarely check between bills. :)

It is very nice to check and do things online when you want though - super fast and easy (well, as long as you don't forget your password, lol!)

I understand that some people just have problems and charge away. I get that and will not judge.

The card you put down at checkin does not get real charges against them....assuming it is a credit card and not a debit card. (debit cards and hotels are awful)

Use one of the cards that have some credit room and a balance. Then pay off the hotel bill when you checkout with whatever works then - cash or that low limit card.

As to building your credit. Do not cancel accounts. Cut up the cards if you need to. Or give them to a trusted parent, etc. You need to keep that credit.

Same, I have a couple cards that are set up to send me an alert any time there's a card-not-present transaction. It's useful to keep an eye on things. I'm also paranoid and have mild OCD, so I tend to check all of my accounts on a daily basis, and keep track of every transaction in Microsoft Money so I can measure expenses vs. income.

    I may have a problem.

We have cards with higher lines but I've closed them prior to booking this trip. Past trips it was not an issue and booking this was last minute when I found a killer airfare deal. I pay all of our bills on time and can afford it just fine, it's just a precautionary way to make sure it doesn't get out of hand again. I miss the days of living only on cash, and I know it's no fault of anyone by our own.

Yes I hope to win big too but no expectations for that!

That's kinda an unfair statement without knowing the persons circumstances. I have a friend, high earner going thru a nasty divorce right now. Divorce court froze joint accounts, spouse was on CC's, intermingled assets, etc. Basically the guys has good credit, multiple tradelines, etc. He had to go out and setup a couple of secured card lines, big old mess. Had another friend had to max out credit cards for medical debt due to major illiness and being on a High Deductable health plan, spike in utlization tanked his credit score temporarilly. This guy really needed a vacation. He is in stage 3 cancer wrapped first round of chemo. Anyway my point is, not everyone who has limited access to credit lines has trouble paying their debt, they just could be in a bad bit of circumstances and a vacation is exactly what they need.

Obviously the OP commented on some personal issues, I just try not to judge when people ask about CC authorization questions anymore.

Agreed. But I do add in advice where it might help. Like people cancelling cards is often counter productive.

Very well said. We have all had problems in our lives that have caused great stress. That doesn't mean we don't need a break every once a while. I know how it feels to pay off debt to be debt free. While you are paying off the debt you can get into a rut and just need a break. Have a great time in Vegas

Thanks everyone. I've been a member of this board for over a decade so I'm not really afraid to ask anything. If I had read my own question about 2 years ago I would've probably had the same thoughts.

And yes, it's been a rough year for us (2015) and a little 2.5 day getaway to our favorite place is really nice to look forward to. We didn't think we'd get there this year but thanks to $87 rt fares and a bunch of comps coming our way, we were able to make it happen without breaking any bank.

I think we're going to stick with Mirage because we have several MyVegas rewards that we would lose out on if we weren't staying at an MGM hotel. It's all good, I love Mirage.

They just put the amount as a hold. It will not charge to your card. Some credit cards do not use a hold against your limit, most will however.

If you have other credit cards, even if they have a balance, if they have room left under the limit you can give that to the front desk to use for the hold. You can then pay cash or use another card to pay for incidentals when you check out.

Well, dvandentop does have a good point. I don't think he was trying criticize OP.
What he tried to point out was, I fully agree, if your credit line is just a couple of hundred, regardless it's on purpose or it was forced on you,
you have more problems to worry about than the hotel charges.
I am not saying people should not go vacation in difficult situations, but I would go frugal, not go luxury under those circumstances.
