Have a trip planned the first part of July and have some questions regarding off-strip hotels. I can't find much of anything on here about South Point but it seems to get very good reviews. I see some talk about Red Rock and GVR and wonder how they compare to South Point? Does anyone have any other suggestions? We are not big gamblers but like the idea of many restaurants and activities within one venue. I appreciate any and all opinions, especially thoughts on South Point. Thanks. Judy in SW Florida

I love South Point. Everything in one place, the pool is nice, the movie theater is fantastic, bingo is a fun distraction, poker room is clean, and the staff is very friendly. Fast drinks, too. I also like that it's very mellow in the morning, which means I can get my coffee and sit back in one of the lounges to read or watch people go by. Nice rooms, too. Sometimes there's something interesting (and often free) going on in the horse arena, too. From my perspective, it's a big value.

If you don't mind driving, our favorites are RR and GVR but you will pay more than at South Point. The rooms are beautiful, the casinos are huge and there are many dining options including a very good buffet, a food court and some upscale restaurants. They also have movie theaters and bowling alleys for when your BR goes downhill.

We are fans of South Point.

Most times we get a rental car when in Vegas as using SP as home base necessitates one. However, if you are simply looking to stay on property and enjoy the bountiful amenities, SP offers a free shuttle to and from the airport. The shuttle requires advance reservations.

They also have a free for Seniors slot tournament one day a week (One free entry, earn two additional entries by playing slots or video poker). The also offer free admission to the taping of the Dennis Bono radio broadcast. The headliner who is appearing at the South Point that weekend usually makes an appearance at the radio show.

South Point reminds you of Orleans and SunCoast. It's nice, bright and roomy. Haven't stayed there but I like to visit.

A comparison of apples and oranges. Hotels like Red Rock caters more towards luxury and a resort style vacation. South Point has very basic rooms/amenities but doesn't pretend to be anything else so it depends what you are looking for.

We love South Point and stay there for a few nights at the end of every trip. FYI the regular rooms are all the same but price increases by $10 depending on view. Cheapest room you will look at a cement wall or something similar, $10 more for midview will get you a view of "something", $10 more than that gets you city view which is a view that goes on for miles ( could be in any direction. ) If you have a rental car you are only 5 mins drive from the South Outlets...otherwise they have a shuttle that you pay for that will get you to the strip. Plenty to do there and you will be amazed at the food/drink prices compared to the strip.

    southpoint=fun

    Southpoint is fun, +
since your looking for non-gaming alternatives it's a great spot.
    lot's of food choices, Bowling, 17 MovieTheatres, & a nightclub/music/entertainment scene + Event Arena.

If your going to gamble, it has some of the best Video poker in L.V.
& Del Mar Deli =yummy deli choices.

They also run a shuttle to a few spots on the strip $8.50 PP round trip

IE from the Boyd Brand of Casinos,
when Mr.Gaughan got out of Boyd he traded his Stock,
for his newest Fav Property & re named it=South Point.

Only stayed at South Point but don't see South Point, SunCoast, or Red Rock being all that different from each other. They are all good. We like Red Rock the best out the three but you can't go wrong with any of them. They are all well-run, clean, safe places.

I have stayed at both South Point and Red Rock and its a big difference imo, never even been to SunCoast so can't comment on them. You are right about the safe and clean part but isn't every hotel/casino in Vegas considered safe. Red Rock standard room is pretty much on par with Wynn´s standard room while South Point is far from a luxury hotel. The pool is awesome at Red Rock while to be nice, very average at South Point. Also a totally different vibe and feel when you compare the atmosphere in the casinos.

I have stayed there many times and love it. Will give you a run down on what I like about the place. First if you are a VP player the place is loaded with great VP. I enjoy playing at bars and they have a bunch of them with great bartenders and friendly cocktail servers. The slot club offers great gifts for play and also a senior slot tournament that is fun. The rooms are good size clean and have very comfortable beds. The pool is not fancy but very enjoyable and a nice place to hang out on a July day. The food choices are good with great service and a fair price. The café offers many " graveyard specials" which are nice for the wallet. The buffet is good size with solid basic food choices at a decent price. The Mexican and Prime Rib places are very good. Twice while eating there we have met the owner of the hotel who also happened to be eating there as well and introduced himself. The hotdog cart in the sports book offers up some of the best all beef hot dogs in the city but get them early as they are quite popular and they sometimes run out because of the huge demand. A hidden little gem is the snack bar inside the sports book where you can get sandwiches soups etc., Everything I have ever had there is quite good. Hope you enjoy your stay there which I think that you will. Mr. Gaughan runs a great hotel.

Red Rock is light years ahead of South Point. Sun Coast is well ahead of South Point as well, but when you're talking Red Rock vs South Point, you may really like South Point, but that doesn't make it a comp property. Well run, clean and safe really low-balls Red Rock, which is a luxury property.

South Point is nice, don't get me wrong, but is more like the Orleans, the Wal-Mart of casino properties. (also incidentally, well run, moderately clean and safe)

Thank you so much for all your positive and informative replies. Since we aren't so much interested in comps or a lot of gambling, I think it will serve as a nice little vacation, with a few trips to the strip and hopefully, a side trip to the Grand Canyon. Any opinions on tours to the canyon which might be nice? Thanks again for all your replies. Judy from SW Florida

I think its best to drive if you have a car. South or north rim for spectacular views, avoid the west rim thats not even in the GC national park.

I stayed at South Point last September just to say that I've stayed at yet another property in Las Vegas. The room was spacious and there were decent food choices. One disadvantage, and it's somewhat minor. I parked in the parking garage, which is to the northwest of the casino, checked in at the front desk which is in the middle of the casino on the east side, and then had somewhat of a walk to the elevators that go up to the rooms across the other side of the casino on the west end. If I stay there again, I will valet. For video poker players, a lot of their machines were uprights instead of slant-tops. To me, South Point did not have a Station's feel, which is probably a good thing.

I also would recommend renting a car and driving you will save money and time. It's a long day driving there and back and even longer with a tour. If you want to do more than just stop at a couple overlooks, do some hiking etc. then plan on staying over night. We did the one day bus tour and would not do it again.

This may be too late to help. I didn't see any trip dates, but here goes.

I've stayed at both. RR just once and SP numerous times. Both have nice rooms, but RR's are definitely more luxurious. SP king rooms have a sitting area with loveseat, but queens do not. Both bathrooms have plenty of room with RR offering a soaking tub, walkin shower, flatscreen in bathroom along with robes.

Food offerings are good at both with SP counterparts costing less. I like the casino at both. VP can be found at both and numerous bars offer the same. RR has more restaurants in close proximity if that's important. As a counter though, SP is much closer to the strip if that's important. Vehicle in and out is easy at both.

Following the precedent ha set with the Gold Coast and Orleans, Gaughan has a liquor section in the gift shop at SP that offers about the lowest prices in LV.

All in all, both are very good. I prefer SP for room and food value as it offers all I need. If on the other hand you enjoy a step higher on the food chain and don't mind paying for it, RR would be the choice. Either way, have a great trip.

    Gooid Luck!

We will be returning for our 6th trip to the SP. For a few years we casino hopped looking for one that would comp us well and that we liked. The SP is now our place. The employees are the best, some have become friends and always treat us like family. (maybe better, depending on your family!!!) The one drawback can be pretty big depending on your vacation itinerary, the location. It is near nothing, works for us, but you may want a car.
