Televisions: Upscaling 1080p content on a 4K television

We are considering buying the Sony 43" 4K XBR-43X830C for a bedroom.

For 720p and 1080i television content (not video games or recorded movies) on 4K televisions is the picture better than on a HD LCD television?

I have read everything from it is better, same, and worse. I also read the best 4K televisions for upscaling 1080p content are Sonys.

(edit: Not 1080p but 720p and 1080i)

 

Don't think you'll really notice it on such a small TV.

I got a 75" 4k and it's definitely much better than HD the same size.

You gotta realize it's the same number of pixels no matter the size of the TV. So that's why it's so much more important on larger sets.

 

What 4K content are you talking about? All i know of is Netflix right now. How does that compare to a Blu Ray?

 

Yep, at that size don't even bother. It's like putting z-rated tires on a Wrangler.

 

Actual 4k content on a large 4k TV is amazing.

But it will be years until there's much mainstream 4k content available.

And heck they're already talking 8k and 12k sets.

But the upscale on full HD content is much cleaner.

 

Bring back plasma!

 

Or maybe some Sony Trinitrons?

 

Hell I'm hoping for a return of the Macintosh SE!

 

Keep in mind that UHD (4K) is not the same as true 4K.

 

Also keep in mind that we're at the point of diminishing returns. A new Samsung 1080p LED set with HD/ Blu Ray setup will blow your mind. The oLED sets will be mainstream in the near future and laying out $2000 now and $3000 then will provide the same net results as 7k now and 10k then. As with most technology, at the consumer lever the actual difference between the top tier and nearly top tier is negligible. The price difference can be huge however. You really don't need a 37 core processor to watch YouTube, so go with the quad core, ram upgrade and buy a brand new box in 2 years.

The sale an told me that even regular 1080 content looks better on a 4K television. Somehow, with the additional pixels, the tv fills in the picture.

Funny this was mentioned. We are replacing one of these with the Sony 4K.

It weighs a ton.

 

The Sony Wega flatscreen was the heaviest CRT ever produced, save for 2 years that Misubushi produced a 40" tube. It was too heavy for the vast majority of people to handle.
