It's been one week now. After 45 minutes of back breaking (I have a bad back) running along side my son's bike, my little boy finally did it! No more training wheels! First solo ride! Just turned 8 but hardly road due to where we live. Well, I thought it was about time to get rid of the training wheels.
He was proud and I was in tears with pride and joy! He will never fotget this. Me either.

Do you remember when you or your child first took a solo ride? How old and where was it?

My son was extremely uncoordinated when he was young. I thought the training wheels would never come off! He was around 8 and be far the oldest kid in the neighborhood with training wheels. I'll never forget the day he decided to ride without them. It took quite a while but he finally did it. Great (old) memory - he just turned 30. [emoji3] Congrats to your son.

I'm glad you got to experience it.

I remember it was an amazing feeling when both of our kids did it.

Congrats!!!! Those are moments you never forget. My little guy was 5 when he was able to bust loose on his own, and oddly, so was my daughter. Coming down our little hill on their own, standing there hopeless, watching, hoping they didn't crash....makes me feel that lump in my throat all over again. They're now almost 11 and 7 and moving on to bigger bikes, and cars aren't in the too distant future for the boy. Ugh.

I don't remember how old I was, but I was probably around 7. My dad and I were taking a ride on a bike course. We were about a mile from the car and one of my training wheels broke. Then the other one broke. So I learned through trial by fire! It was a great time and we still laugh about it.

It worked pretty well. I'm 21 and still enjoy riding, and logged over 700 miles last summer!

Congrats on your son, Packer! I'm sure he'll cherish this memory as long as you will :)

Way to go Packer!!! I'm not a parent but I'm sure that that has to be a hallmark moment for a parent.

I remember the day my training wheels came off, summer of '67 in Galveston Texas. I was so proud, but in retrospect I think my parents were prouder.

Congrats to you and your son Packer on one of lifes little gifts.:peace:  :peace:

I was 4 years old - I had an older sister by 2 years and as soon as she learned to ride without training wheels I was right behind her. I had to do everything she did. I bought a bike with training wheels for my 8 year old grandson. His parents got divorced last year and neither of them have taken the time to teach him how to ride. I pick him up from school almost every day and he stays with us until my son gets off at work around 5:30. He probably stays with us more than his parents. He has only been out once on it since we got it. Hopefully my work schedule and the weather will cooperate and he will be training wheel free soon.

My son turned 4 yrs old Dec 22nd.
He hasn't been interested in riding a bike.
I take him outside with it..........and all he's interested in is pushing
it down the the sidehill grassy knoll....and watching it CRASH !
    THAT HE ENJOYS !

My siblings + I had a small block wall ( 2 ft high ) along our dirt driveway .
We ALL LEARNED balancing on that wall - pushing off w/ the two wheeler --
going as far as we could before crashing to the ground.
I still remember how it hurt !!!!
But we got back up and tried again.

    Congrats Packer !

Congratulations, fun times! Teaching my two daughters were much different experiences. The older daughter picked it up right away, within 10 minutes she was cruising. The younger daughter's takeoff was much more of an extended event. Funniest memory was that it was garbage collection day which contributed to some memorable landings.

Enjoy the moment Packer, next up handing over the car keys!

Thank you for all the well wishes. Keep the stories coming!
Being over 50, divorced, having a 8 year old 55% of the time I know how fast time flies by. Due to being up there in age and losing my memory (that's the first thing to go. Some would say that's the second thing to go! Lol) I take pictures and videos all the time so I can look back and and remember every minute. Also for him later in life.
My memory of my first ride was at 8 years old. My 8 year older sister taught me. She did the Dave thing I did with my boy and all of a sudden I was riding. I'll never forget it. One day soon after my sis and I were riding around the neighborhood and at 8 I watched her fall in the street and break her arm. To this day the trauma hurts me. lol. Hope that doesn't happen to me! About to go by a bike to ride with him.

That is a big moment in a child's life, one never forgotten. I am happy for you being there to share that with your son!

My daughter was about 7 and she ran into the van and rode into the flower bed near the edge of the yard and into a Barberry bush. :)

While I'm sure you won't, there's a good chance he will.

I have no idea when the first time I rode without training wheels although I do remember riding with them and then later without on the same bike.

Yesterday my Grandsonwas out on his bike. Still with training wheels. Only 2nd time to ride it (he had a bike before but his parents never spent much time teaching). After about 20 minutes he asked for the wheels to come off. Then after about 15 minutes of me balancing him down the driveway. -this. He said it was his best day ever. https://vimeo.com/151483575
