    I was watching....."Globe Trekker" ?....I think ?
    *
Crazy broad takes her camera crew to Chernobyl !
    What the hell ?
She mentions 3 of her crew said, "no".
    ( only three ? )
They have tours.......with alot of paperwork being signed before hand.

    *
She actually got to stand outside the freakin' silo !
And the damn silo could still implode......and is leaking.
The ground was radioactive......geiger counter was rattling away.
    *
    Are you crazy ?
    *
"If you can't see it........it can't hurt you."
    * The gov't gave a bunch of ( poor ) locals the option of returning to ancestral land ---
and they're farming the soil -- eating/drinking etc.
    *
Tour includes the the deserted city built for the reactor workers ---
they were evacuated 3 days after the incident.
Street sweepers were cleaning the fallout on the streets up until then !
Film footage of the soldiers, who were asked to clean up
with shovels + masks ----- they would be released from 2 years active army duty --
in return for 20 mins. of shovelling nuclear waste.
    Today, 25% are only alive.
    Nice trade off ?
    *
I happen to have studied about radiation ----
I have a NY State X-ray tech license.
    *
No way I'd tour..........I'll watch what you filmed.
    *
    Would you ?

I have watched a few documentaries in the last couple of years on the site as well as Jeremy Wade on River Monsters go there last year, while there are still some hot areas apparently much of the area is safe for humans and some people apparently never left the region and still live there. The River Monsters episode did show how much the radiation had affected the wildlife when a catfish he caught was examined, what he thought was a much younger fish was in reality a stunted mature fish but otherwise every healthy. I would go but guaranteed only for a short time and only in the areas with lower levels of radiation, but to see the Red Forest would be interesting.

I'll watch documentaries about it, but, no, I have no desire to go.

If you want to check out creepy abandoned places, there's less toxic places to visit.

I'm not much of a jetsetter, but I'd consider it if I were in the area. Why not? I've probably had enough CT Scans and Xrays this year to get the equivalent amount of radiation exposure as that tour.

I saw the same episode of Globe Trekker and thought the funniest part was how they wouldn't start the tour until everyone had appropriate rain jackets. Better to be irradiated than dampened, I guess. :)

I dont see why not, if you're there for only a short time your risk is minimal. My chances of ever being in the ukraine are about the same as winning the powerball however(prob less).

I used to work in a nuclear power plant by the way. Radiation is not the enemy and cannot be avoided, taking a plane ride is like getting an x-ray.

Not sure when I might make it to Ukraine but if there, why not? Apparently nature has moved back in with a vengeance, which is cool.

We all do some combo of fly, smoke, drink, eat red meat and lousy faux farmed salmon, suck down lovely metropolitan air, get jacked up over silly NFL games, get X-rays, drive drive drive and who knows what else, so it seems silly to sweat something like this being life-threatening.

I was on an earl stern European tour around 2007 and we visited the Ukraine. We were aware of the tour and would have done it had the logistics worked. We were in kiev for only a couple days and didn't have a day to give up for the tour.

I will be doing exactly this in April. I have a 48 hour layover in Kiev en route to Central Asia. I would be happy to report back to y'all about it.

I buy into the (maybe irrational) theory of "It would be safer not to, so why do it?"
Same as smoking, I'm not going to do something that would increase the risk of a long drawn-out death.
There are other landmarks I would rather see. I would rather see Dachau (sp) or Auswitz(sp) than walk into Chernobyl, and I don't want to go to a concentration camp.
It has no attraction to me anyway.

Well, after your Chernobyl tour, you won't need night lights anymore for those late night bathroom visits...not funny, I know.
For me, having a spouse who completed 32 radiation treatments and seeing the side effects, why take chances on something that is still radioactive and not medically necessary - but, to each his own.
